oh god, I can imagine movies and games on a Stereoscopic display.

Beautiful!

It would be great to see all the projects that Apple have worked on, and are working on. I'm sure there are some really nice projects / prototypes that have occurred but never seen the light of day, or won't for a while.

P.S Of course, this is dreaming, its not going to happen.

not to be completely indifferent to your wife's plight, if any company focused on making sure every product is usefull to each and every of the 6+ billion people on earth, we'd never have anything new. just because (assumption for hyperbole) .00001% of the people out there cannot see out of one of their eyes does not mean apple shouldn't be working on developing 3D technology . . .

I have the same problem, even if I can see from both eyes, I am astygmatic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astygmatism) and I have developed the tendency of using a preferred eye. This condition is very, very common, it has absolutely no impact on everyday's life, but for the ability to see artificially generated stereoscopic images. People like me see the world in 3D because our brain is reconstructing the image. Remember that vision happens in the brain. But we cannot reconstruct something that does NOT exist and it is just an optical illusion.

So, my 2 cents here. If ever Apple will try this on the market it will be a huge flop.

It might be an interesting concept. I think it would be a specialty market mostly. Perhaps a special ipod(phone/touch), or cinema screen.

We actually see what Apple is working on with every new product or software release. As soon as these products are both technically and financially feasible we are the lucky beneficiaries. It's just a matter of patience (which I often don't have when it comes to news like this, lol).

Well, I have astygmatism too, which means that 3D (in its current implementations, at least) just gives me a headache. But it's fine with me if other people get 3D displays!!!:)

Some prototypes / products are never released. For me, those projects are the most interesting ones. This 3D may never see the light of day.

Sounds interesting. Now, how abouts some research on refreshing prehistoric ACDs :D

" The 30" model last received an increase in specification in March 2006 while the 20" and 23" remains unchanged since August 2006."

Ummm, this isn't new...

Uh, wait sec. Stereo capable graphics cards have been used in realtime CAD/CAM/CAE for a looong time.

I suppose Apple can pursue a process patent just as well as any patent squatter can.

Not good.

My wife, who is a graphic designer, is blind in one eye. She cant see 3D and there are tons of others out there who can't.

Until they find a way to make 3d possible with only one eye, this is pointless.

:p How funny. It would technically be more feasible to restore sight to that eye then to do what you ask.

So...

...if there's anyone in Vancouver, Canada on here, maybe you could do me a favor and check these guys out. http://www.zecotek.com/EN/overview/

They are rumored to have a prototype with brilliant image - i.e. working technology, not just vaporware. So basically either Apple better get their act together quickly or buy this company out :D

Innovating is fun!

Strangely, my first thought when i saw this article was not Mac related. I have a PS3 and recently downloaded the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue demo video to watch on my HD TV. Have you guys seen this? Imagine a game with graphics like that presented in 3D!!??

My second thought was Mac related...

I use two 23" Apple displays side by side. How confusing will that be on the eyes? If the system is tracking me, will i have a 3D image on the screen that i am looking at and another, potentially different, 3D image in my peripheral vision? Is that possible? Doctor in the house?

Will the tracking be done by a built-in iSight?

I need to lie down....

The pattern describes a display. That stereo capable graphics card would only feed this display.

dang. everyone else already pointed out how ridiculous that post was.

Kind of like how stereo audio was a huge flop because it was of no use to people who can only hear out of one ear?

so that explains why stereo systems with stereo/multi channel sound and movie theatres with surround sound went out of business because all those people who are deaf in one ear couldn't tell a difference.
