There was a time when people used to talk face to face and drink a beer together. This iNonsense only makes people more lonely than they already are.
Pfft. I can think of at least one situation I've been in where something like this would have been helpful, specifically in identifying *who* to reach out and communicate with.

The situations it would be useful in aren't ones it would be replacing. e.g., I was at a zombie film festival.. Obviously everyone there had a love of zombie films, and I would probably get on with most of them - but there were hundreds of people.. You can't talk to all of them to find out who's into what, can you? It could help you isolate people you'd really like to talk to. It'd be good for finding people to arrange games with etc too. If used well it couldn't do any harm, just help people meet & find common ground.

There is one thing that a TV and a smartphone have in common: Their most important hardware feature is the "power off" button.

My goodness.... for once I agree with you! LOL!

Really, I think for some the addiction to "on-line" is detrimental. As much as I love chit chatting and following sites like this, I also make sure I hit the "off" button and go out and live. Now I wish I could get people to understand that just because I have a cell phone does not mean I'm available 24/7 and when I don't answer that does not mean call back 20 times. A true downside to technology... there are times I want to be unavailable.

In some ways, this proposed App could actually promote more face to face interaction. It will be interesting to see where we're all at 10 years down the road and how mobile technology is affecting our lives.

LOL, I always want to be unavailable. I have business people who literally terrorize me if I don't pick up immediately. Call, text AND e-mail.
They can't understand that I may have been on another call.
And, it is never urgent or an emergency.

There also is an iDisease. At lunches or dinners people put their phone on the table in a restaurant, so they can see if somebody calls.
They then can't even concentrate on a conversation with you because they check every 30 seconds worried they'd miss a text or call or e-mail.

I have also seen our future generation gathering in a large group for dinner at a restaurant and everybody is on their phones. Nobody talks to their friends at the table. They even text and take calls in between bites once the food arrives.

That's supposed to be social networking?

Online dating with a GPS twist... How is this any different then all of the online dating sites that millions of people use? Those people are more concerned with getting a date than they are privacy so I'm sure this would catch on to that population quickly.

Look at your Facebook!! There are people who post EVERYTHING about everywhere they go and everything they do throughout the day. Do you really think that those people would have a problem with this feature/ap??

An excellent idea, and this is the way the web is moving.

Apple has an awful lot of information that defines a person — and it has the platform to add more data-gathering apps.

This is all fine, if I'm happy for this data to be analysed to help create a better product for me then that's great. If I want to switch it off or not be analysed at all, I'm sure Apple will learn from Facebook's mistakes and create some solid privacy settings.

Now, I need to start downloading some cool music and apps . . .

is this a drawing of the iphone 5 with 4" screen and edge to edge display

Why do people keep saying this? Am I the only one who can see the big thick border, presumably representing an iPhone 4 in the standard Apple case?

What's that next to the home button, LED notification light?

Haha... people are getting another reason to realize they're lonely and here's a quick fix. When this app is out there - they will go for it!
Apple knows what they're doing. People are simple.
