It seems faintly absurd to patent things you haven't even worked out how to make viable. I could patent the idea of junk food which makes you lose weight, but not have a clue how to realise such a thing.

Would this type of tech require some form of OLED display?

I still remember SJ crapping on OLEDs with the release of iPhone 4. He was on stage and said something along the lines of "You'll never get a display like this with OLEDs!" It sounded so out of place like he was going out of the his way to diss it.. as if the big mean OLED maker took his toys away from the sandbox and went home.

Would this be another example of Apple being against a technology before they were for it?
Maybe they were against OLEDs because of poor image quality. But now that technology is improving they will adopt it. At time of Steve Jobs presentation that statement was correct.

That's because Samsung has soooo many patents with AMOLED. What's funny is many fanboys prefer IPS displays. I wonder what will happen if Apple does implement AMOLED. I've got so many posts saved....yes I'm that sad!:D

Samsung seems to have others...

Hopefully if Apple implements AMOLED displays they won't lie about the resolution. If they do, I will make fun of them too. Any sane person doing side by side comparisons of AMOLED and IPS displays at the same DPI will call the IPS display far superior. AMOLED displays have a lot going for them, it is a great technology. One of those positives is not display quality at a given resolution.

Feel free to save mine. My opinion of AMOLED and the deceptive marketing that goes along with it today are not going to change.

I think the form in the lead image is a rather useless implementation of flexible displays. I would love to see one of those Samsung designs, particularly the ones with foldable or extendable screens. Imagine having a phone the size of an iPhone 5 with a screen which can roll out to the size of an iPad mini.

I don't know, almost all the screens these days looks great to me. Maybe at one time there was some difference, but if you showed me a display and asked me if it was IPS, AMOLED, or whatever, I wouldn't be able to tell.

I thought that Apple hated AMOLED?

From Engadget and patent.

"The patent involves building a device from an open-ended transparent body (of glass, for example) that becomes a full wrap-around display when a flexible AMOLED screen"

http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/28/apple-patent-wrap-around-amoled-display/

Funny how MacRumors left this notable feature out of the article.

Apple CEO Tim Cook takes a dig at Samsung with talk of 'poor' AMOLED screens.

Amoled obviously wont be the same as it is now

Don't get caught up in the marketing hype. AMOLED is a Samsung-produced tech and something Samsung would make Apple pay for out the nose. This is the real reason AMOLEDs aren't on iPhones.

Is that a 30-pin connector I see? :p

More like a 60-pin connector :D

Your beef isn't with AMOLED, it's with the PenTile matrix layout (which many AMOLED displays incorporate).

A 1280x720 AMOLED Plus display (which uses the standard RGB subpixel layout) will look just as good resolution/clarity-wise as an IPS 1280x720 display, but a PenTile/AMOLED 1280x720 display would look crunchy (because it isn't 'actually' 1280x720, which seems to be the essence of your complaint).

Am I the only one who mistook this to be the 5th gen ipod nano before reading the article? That concept has been around for years.

And the fact that some people actually like iPhone's LCD better.;)

Flexible phone display to put content on the corners would be terrible -- every time you picked it up you'd be accidentally hitting buttons.

No, I think all these patents are false flags. I still believe Apple will use flexible displays, but it will be for TV and computer display tech. Imagine an Apple TV you can put on the wall, then roll up and store when you're done. Or a Cinema Display you can take with you.

I think you're partially right, but the way he went out of his way to s*** on OLED I think arnette below is more on the money:

I tend to believe this as well.

I really like the looks of OLED displays. The only thing I tend to notice that's a drawback is how manufacturers tint the displays blue to offset the shorter life of the blue pixels. All Apple would have to do is port over Display Calibrator Assistant to iOS: Problem solved!

;)

Ahem.....

Apparently Samsung stole from the future!

The innovations that make it to market eventually are available to all the leading tech. companies when they are sourcing components.
Samsung may be piloting a prototype there.
No one wants to be embarrassed again like they were in 2007 when the iPhone was announced.

Being first to market with something cool seems to be the way to riches.
Samsung seems to have a real shotgun approach trying to have a hit with poorly executed flash features that most people never use.

If Apple was granted that patent then Samsung should watch out.

Guess you're not old enough to remember newspapers. People used to get their news that was printed on rolled up pieces of paper made from trees.

Yeah, and what do they always try to do? Thrash it around to make it flat so they can read it
