I thought that Apple hated AMOLED?

From Engadget and patent.

"The patent involves building a device from an open-ended transparent body (of glass, for example) that becomes a full wrap-around display when a flexible AMOLED screen"

Funny how MacRumors left this notable feature out of the article.

Apple CEO Tim Cook takes a dig at Samsung with talk of 'poor' AMOLED screens.

There are definitely uses for AMOLED, but it looks like apple thinks that they're not ready yet for usage in iphones.

Ahem.....

Apparently Samsung stole from the future!
Did the iPod contain new tech that no one else had? Did the iPhone? iPad? No, they didn't. Apple's 'innovative-ness' is not in creating new technology. It's in implementing it better than anyone else.

Besides, this is merely a public concept design and Apple doesn't do concept designs. Not in public. And how does Samsung's implementation of a curved screen make it better than phones with flat screens?

And guess who was the screen provider when Apple did this patent ...

ok, so you don't understand what POC means right ? You know using different *PLACEHOLDER* pieces of hardware, just to validate a concept.

Don't get caught up in the marketing hype. AMOLED is a Samsung-produced tech and something Samsung would make Apple pay for out the nose. This is the real reason AMOLEDs aren't on iPhones.

Actually OLED displays and the integral transistors were first tested and produced in late 1960's. Motorola has tested these out before.

"Super AMOLED" is Samsung's marketing label for their OLED product. They are not the only producer.

Already done by samsung, bring on another law suit

TVs in the 1950's had curved glass. So, this makes Samsung's patent invalid.

But seriously, the patent is NOT just for curved glass, which occurred back in the BC years in Ancient Egypt. It's a particular implementation of it.

The only difference is that samsung are publicising their research, and apple aren't.

No, Samsung is DOING the research and development of the curved display, while Apple is waiting for the technology to be available. Apple does not make displays, so I don't see how on earth they can patent a curved display design.

Hopefully if Apple implements AMOLED displays they won't lie about the resolution. If they do, I will make fun of them too. Any sane person doing side by side comparisons of AMOLED and IPS displays at the same DPIwill call the IPS display far superior. AMOLED displays have a lot going for them, it is a great technology. One of those positives is not display quality at a given resolution.

Feel free to save mine. My opinion of AMOLED and the deceptive marketing that goes along with it today are not going to change.

DPI? Are you sure you know what you blabbering about? Do you know when DPI is used and how it's different from PPI?

Resolution is same irrespective of any type of display. What you are clearly referring to is PenTile matrix. I am sure you know PenTile has nothing to do with AMOLED. You can have PenTile also in LCD displays.

Don't waste my time here. We see illiterates like you everyday.

And it will take at least couple of years until Samsung will have enough manufacturing capacity to supply Apple. Also the glass curved this way is not practical: the view will be distorted and the curved phone will be less protected.

Like that antena implementation or maps or multitasking

what is the point of a flexible display??

If it bends it can better absorb and translate kinetic energy, hopefully dumping it someplace other then the display. I'd like a bouncing iPhone (iPad) that doesn't crack please :p

Or at least one that isn't so ridged that it instantly cracks from a corner hit when dropped from short adult chest height.

In terms of easy of use: Flat > Curved.

Also, perfectly curved clear / glass-like surfaces without distortions are VERY expensive to manufacture. Even on high-end Swiss watches only a few companies have 'perfect' sapphire crystals.

I believe this too, just didn't type it. Component sourcing is a big constraint for Apple - nothing they haven't shown to overcome but I believe the AMOLED vs. LCD argument boils down to this. It's a manufacturing decision, not an "LCD has better color response" decision.

wraparound displays are the future, whether we like it or not. Just a matter of when and who gets it to the market first. Pretty much every single big phone manufacturer thought of wraparound screens, so please nobody yell that Apple got here first.

Exactly.
