I don't know about this, but it seems like a step in the right direction. I can't WAIT for *real* augmented reality type systems to be feasible.

For those unfamiliar with the research (Do they exist? :)) , Think of wearing what appears to be a simple pair of glasses, but in which the glass lenses have an extremely thin transparent OLED coating so they can act as embedded displays. Displaying movies/TV video would be a very minor use of this type of device. Coupled with a tiny camera sensor in the frame of the glasses, It would be built primarily for so-called "augmented reality" applications, in which virtual graphics would overlay the real world to provide a unified information display without having to look down at a device... In essence, a personal HUD (heads-up display) displayed right onto your glasses.
It would be used as an interface for digital communication, navigation, information retrieval, etc. This tech is just dying to be created, but the technological capability just isn't there yet. The glasses themselves would only need to hold the equipment for generating the OLED display. The actual image recognition and processing would be done in a cell-phone sized device in your pocket and transmitted via wireless to the glasses.

Who the hell want's to walk around with those things on, who would want to watch a video where you can't see what's happening around you? Besides using it while in bed watching porn I don't see this selling well. Notice the other ones don't sell either. Why? Because you can't see and you look like a dork.

Yeah, its stupid, we kind of have something called BLUETOOTH and we use it to get rid of wires, its been out for years and the point of progressing in technology is to pursue, not to do it the easy way by making geeky looking wires. Apple is better than that.

They are, which is why this product won't be released until they can make it look better than it already does! They are going to develop it until they can make it look good, and when it looks good and it is useable, they will begin to sell it then.

I'll say it again-- Bluetooth doesn't have nearly enough bandwidth to handle a video signal, let alone two video signals. The whole point of at least one of Apple's patents is to use those fiber optic cables to eliminate the need to create the image in the glasses themselves. Go wireless, and you need the lasers, processing, BT antennas and everything else built into the display... The way it's shown is only marginally more distracting than headphone cables. Go wireless and you can put the storage on your belt but the display will still need to be huge to hold the imagers.

We're not even to the point of getting quality audio over bluetooth, let alone video. If you're going to hold back technology until you can cram everything through a few milliwatts worth of radio power, life will get awfully boring awfully quickly.

I'm once again astounded by the lack of foresight on this forum.

Portable computing IS the future. Mobile devices currently have small screens, which is a problem, there are two answers..

1) Fold/roll up screens.
2) Retina firing specs

and if you think it will never happen, im sure this isnt the first time technology has surprised you, and will do so again.

With your picture this sounds like more and more like Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator movie. He had an eye they would give him data based on what he looked at. While this would help with say, the sex offender warning, I am opposed to your markup as a privacy issue. there is enough information (both wanted and unwanted) floating around the internet. I would not want my life on display like that (not that I have anything to hide, but just think of someone hacking this to get your SSN # or account numbers just by looking at you). As it stands now, the information is out there, but you have to dig. This would make it too easy.

In order to make this truely work; would be that people would have to be imbedded with microchips that give off the infomation when the glasses come in contact with the laser or infra-red. No thanks, we are already coming too close to the end times, the mark of the beast, tracking and controlling people.

While Technology is good, you really have to be careful on how the uses could end up.

Oh and what comes next? Making the ability to read one's thoughts - so you know what people are thinking about you? Again, no thanks.

Tell that to the millions of myspace and facebook users.

Most likely, I see this as a peripheral for a pocket sized wireless device before we get to nanomachines or implants. You could choose to carry a wireless device (iPhone?) that would allow other devices to send and receive data. The Zune and Nintendo DS already do this, to some extent. The user could decide what extent of personal information they'd like to keep on their device. In terms of buildings or locations, I would assume that a local wireless device would broadcast necessary data and parameters which would be picked up by our pocket sized wireless devices, with the visual information transfered to our HUDs. This will all be as voluntary as carrying a cell phone. I don't think it's soon enough to cry apocalypse just yet.

Oh and what comes next? Making the ability to read one's thoughts - so you know what people are thinking about you?

I'm not sure that mind reading comes next. After all, many of us already spill our daily lives and personal information onto the internet voluntarily.

Woah there!

WOAH THERE... take a deep breath. Let's get some things straight:

First of all, this is NOT a picture of my creation, and I think it is a poor example. I simply threw it up there to give a very primitive example of the type of information overlay I was referring to, NOT THE ACTUAL CONTENT. The content is TOTALLY irrelevant. A real device would NOT involve any type of personal information, and probably wouldn't involve people at all, other than maybe helping you recognize an acquaintance or colleague. my god, where in the hell did you get this crazy idea of microchips embedded in people's skin and Lasers pointing at them??? That is TOTALLY out of left-field. I think you are getting the completely wrong idea here. You would NOT be able to look at a person and just magically steal their social security or credit card number or something.. It does not give you access to information you don't already have. This is NOT "SKYNET" we are talking about here... This technology is SIMPLY A DISPLAY INTERFACE to information that is already stored on your computer or the internet.. Again, The ONLY information it would provide would be information you already have (contact listings, your schedule, etc) and publicly available information from the internet, like restaurant locations, city maps and directions.

Technological progress is great, and of course it has to always be balanced with people's privacy and civil liberties. I am the first one to stand up for that. (For real threats to privacy, see terahertz wave and back-scatter x-ray machines). I don't think anyone looks forward to actually reading other people's thoughts.. Though I don't doubt that someday relatively soon there will be true "lie detector" technology in the form of an enhanced fMRI or PET scan machine. And unfortunately, unless the American people stop being cowards and stop letting the government strip their liberties away in the name of "security" and "fighting terrorism", then that type of "though-spying" will become a reality.

And as far as "we are already coming too close to the end times, the mark of the beast", I have to say I certainly hope you are not serious, and I hope even more so that you are not part of what I'm about to describe. These Christian fundamentalist-types are just completely off the rocker. Anyone encouraging an "end-times" war between Iran and Israel in the hope that it creates a "second-coming" of Jesus has to be clincally insane. I think it should be specifically mentioned in the "DSM IV" listed as a symptom of psychotic behavior. What scares me the most is that there are literally tens of millions of people that believe in that nonsense that are VOTING in the upcoming election. *shudder*
