How about they design a sensor

...that detects when corporations hide flaws in their product that can lead to serious harm or death for users. They can call it the iEvilCorpDeathWatch

FYI, the supported operating temperature range of the iPhone is listed as "32° to 95° F."

So if you use your iPhone outside on just about any day in the winter (in many parts of the country), or a hot summer day (in almost any part of the country), then Apple could conceivably call this "Consumer Abuse."

I see Apple's point here, but this could get ugly. Apple's been perpetrating all kinds of consumer abuse lately if you ask me.

If stored in memory, should be pretty simple to make it all disappear, hence, no proof of anything. :p

Love It...

Like another poster said, I will have to reserve judgment when more information is available, but I for one, if this is as accurate as the liquid submersion indicators, am going to enjoy this tool. I cannot tell you how often I see the OBVIOUS abuse of iPhones, MacBooks and MacBook Pros and customers insist that its a manufacturers defect, Apple should stand behind the product that they sell, etc. It's really sad that people expect Genii to believe this. Genii are given the training and information to know the differences. One would presume that if you spend as much or even if you only spend a few hundred for a device that we have become so dependent on that one would take simple care for the device. It's a shame how they don't and want Apple, Inc. to pay for end-user abuse.

I do and have NO issues with any of my devices. NYC to IRAQ to AFGHANISTAN and back...NO ISSUES. Simply take care of you equipment.

I guess this means Apple isn't planning on offering warranty with accident protection like some other manufacturers do anytime soon.

This means Apple fanboys can finally shut up about Microsoft using an activation system to check for a valid Windows.

"OS X doesn't require activation because Apple trusts its customers. That's why I like this company so much".

Yeah, right!

The thing is, this data would be more accurate than just a sensor that goes to POSITIVE when it's too hot or too cold. If they saw that the LCD broke when the temp was at -5 degrees F, then they would say that's in spec. But if it was that code before, worked fine for months and then broke from something else that's covered, they'd be able to tell and you probably WOULD still get your device covered. Did people ever thing of that?

Same with the water sensors. A better one could tell when it was wet and when it broke and if they were related. Rather than just voiding your warranty outright.

If stored in memory, should be pretty simple to make it all disappear, hence, no proof of anything. :p

Except the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. :D If Apple saw you had a phone for 6 months and it didn't register even the slightest drop... I'm sure you'd be singled out for tampering. A better method would be either creating a random generator to simulate "normal use" and writing over with that. Or copying another users data.

Apple = big brother 2009 style. They are starting to make Microsoft look tame in comparison.

I hate to burst someone's balloon, but back in the 90s, IBM and NEC could access your computer when you called tech support for a machine that was malfunctioning!

I don't remember any outcry that this was Big Brother then! Various invasions of your privacy and your computer has been going on for years!

Isn't this a GOOD thing? If my Macbook starts cracking with no abuse, right now Apple can't tell if I dropped it or not, and probably won't be too happy to replace parts on it.

But if they CAN tell I didn't drop it, they will gladly make a replacement for what is more clearly a manufacturing problem than abusive treatment. It seems to me that if this is properly implemented, it will only prevent people from bringing in abused devices to be replaced for free.

Why the **** should Apple replace a device that YOU damaged. If you damage it then try and palm it off as a manufacturing defect, then the cost is just passed on to us, the consumers. Apple is on exactly the right track with this.

Let see

It goes like that at applestore

customer: well... my new iphone has this discoloration problem...you know is only 1 week old...i wonder if you could...

genius: let me check it (connects the iphone to the secret checking machine, a nice bip is heard)

genius: I'm sorry sir you should not put your iphone in the back-pocket of your trousers the morning after a mexican dinner.

customer: ...(speachless)

genius: Next one!

The amount of paranoia flying around in here is stupid.

Don't blame Apple for using this kind of tech... blame the arseholes that do things like drop their device in the toilet or step on it for the sole purpose of taking it in and exchanging it for a new one.

This isn't a case of "big brother", it's a case of a few idiots ruining it for everyone.

Would you site the ones that do? Thank you.

You mean "cite," and I owned a Dell with accident protection once upon a time. Never ended up using it, and I haven't been back on Dell's site to see if they still offer it.

Apple=M$=Every Other Wall Street Pawn

If they don't have to pay as much for user-caused damage, their operating margins would be higher and they could lower the prices for the rest of us.

Riiiight. Just like the insurance companies dropped premiums where caps were forced by local laws to clamp down on restitution claims.

If Apple were a privately held company and not a suckler on the Wall Street teat I might _almost_ believe that sentiment. However companies that are beholden to the quarterly bottom-line do anything and everything to maximize their margins. Honestly it surprises me they didn't do this already.

I can't see the patent office granting this though. They've had hard-drive shock monitors and fault sensors in things for many, many years. Maybe the application of which wasn't so broad, but I really hope they don't get the patent if only on those grounds alone.

Apple makes some really nifty gadgets that look cool and play well - but they are STILL a Wall Street Owned Stock Puppet like M$ and all the other companies of their type.

Just because their leader wears a black turtleneck and doesn't throw chairs at people doesn't make the bottom-line, quarterly-dividend junkies any different. "Maximize Revenue" is their mantra. Hey, if they can look green, polish the "we love the customer" veneer and kiss fanboi booty - more power to them. Capitalism at its finest. Just don't think altruism isn't also driven by the almighty dollar. :)

Yeah, right!

Apple trusts its Mac customers. Most iPod/iPhone users use Windows. Just saying ;)

I really don't feel comfortable with this.

I felt kind of funny with my Aluminum MacBook. I know Apple has been a long-time user of aluminum, but it already acts as a sort of "Consumer abuse" signal. Apple doesn't have to honor your warranty if they find a dent, they can blame your problem on a drop or something.

Those water-sensors already suck. My cell phone has some in it, and upon visiting Maine during a 3in/day rain storm, the humidity made my hotel room damp, and triggered the sensor, so I'm not allowed to get a new battery on my 6 month old cell phone, with a battery life of about 3 hours standby.

These things do concern me, and I've just gone ahead and grabbed some safeware insurance as opposed to applecare. I love Apple's products, but I think they're overstepping their boundaries. I understand they want to save themselves money, but too much power can lead to abuse, and Apple may very well do that. What if my package was dropped during delivery? Warranty could be voided. What if my notebook slips out of my hand due to my disability, and falls safely a few inches onto my bed? Warranty voided. What if I cover the damn thing in bubble-wrap constantly when I'm not using it? Warranty could still be voided somehow I bet.

I do and have NO issues with any of my devices. NYC to IRAQ to AFGHANISTAN and back...NO ISSUES. Simply take care of you equipment.

I understand. iPods and iPhones don't suddenly stop working when the temperature is out of their spec. But what if something does mysteriously go wrong with your iPhone, and it's really unrelated to temperature, but you take it to Apple and they say they won't replace it because their data shows that the iPhone was exposed to high temperatures in the past so it's no longer covered?

Would they do this? Who knows. They're just opening that door at this point.

I have no problem....

I have been sending my apple products to repair several times 4 years after the warranty expires and without apple care by just photoshoping the receipts.

Most of my powerbooks have a mayor falure just a month after the one year warranty expires, lets say logic board burned out after a system software update and things like that where I never exposed the device to any abuse.

Apple powerbooks/ mac books pros will have a mayor hardware failure all of the sudden just withing weeks the first year of warranty expire. I have 4 powerbooks and is the same thing with all of them, and Apple wants me to get apple care for selling me disposable equipment? nah, I photoshoped the receipts and they are in warranty again.

I would call that an even deal.

I don't understand the whining. If you break your device, then you are responsible for it. The only people who would be upset over thos are the liars who abuse their device, and then try to deceive Apple in to fixing it under warranty. Are YOU one of those liars? If you aren't, then why are you upset?

We should be happy, since now the people with genuine problems get beter service, since Apple doesn't have to spend time fixing computers they really shouldn't be fixing.
