I hate to say this, but Apple is behind the market already, otherwise it would not be 5% or less.

I really do beg to differ.... what do you think the average market share is? The only company that can claim to blow 5% out of the water is Dell.

pcdata...zdzet..dats all

read up, me friend and then decide:D

in other words, we can be doing a lot better

SURE, a G4 is not as fast as a G5 BUT if you buy a G4 now you know that you arn't going to be plagued with design bugs. What happens if you buy the first G5 to realise that a small bug was not noticed or not fixable in time and you have to put up with it or sell your G5 for a G4?

G4 now = safe and FAST

But, if I wait and buy a G5 and it has design bugs, I'm certain Apple won't leave me in the cold.

So, a G5 later = less safety, Apple fixes any bugs, and FASTER

If I'm wrong about apple fixing bugs in early releases, please let me know, and I'll start checking out the Dell/Gateway rumor boards.

The only thing is how long are we going to wait. Its a gamble both ways. If you're loosing productivity by waiting on a machine that has no set availability, then you shouldn't wait. The other side of the coin, you might buy the newest G4 and then want to shoot yourself when the G5s come out a month later.

Face the facts that you'll only have the fastest machine for a little while, no matter what.

I have two G4s, a TiPB and a 450 MHz Sawtooth. I can afford to wait, and that's what I'm doing. You need to decide for yourself what you can do.

sorry

just wanted to apologize....i'm out of school for the weeek..giving me excess energy..combine with all the G5 talk and...well you see what happens....just wanted to apologize to everyone...  :D

It is a good point and I answer with 2 statements:
1) if G5 = midyear, I PROBABLY will be buying the first model G5 (depends on funds)
2) if you can afford to wait for fixes IF there are bugs (and I say IF) then you would be better off with a G5, it will last you FAR longer, BUT if you need a machine that is going to work all the time and you have no time to wait for fixes that could be a while in the making, go the new G4s, they are a FANTASTIC machine.

Reseller Truths

If a reseller tells you he has inside info, he's lying.
I work for one in one of the major US cities. It's my bother-in-laws company.
I'm a fine artist/software guru. I have 2 co-workers: a hardware/networking
expert, and a phone/customer service guy. We service the local Pro market (printers, photographers, and increasingly video guys).
I also know our local Apple rep. He MIGHT glean some inside stuff a couple of days before a release, but thats the extent of it. WE don't get squat for advance knowledge.
