Apple today announced that the iPhone 12 family is gaining support for MagSafe, which will offer high-powered wireless charging as well as a new ecosystem of accessories that attach to the iPhone 12. Previously, MagSafe was Apple's brand for the MacBook's breakaway charging cables.

The company said that MagSafe will improve the charging experience on iPhone 12, with magnets that are optimized for alignment and efficiency, and support 15W of charging. iPhone 12 will still support existing Qi charging mats.

On the accessory side of things, there will be a new ecosystem of magnetic cases that snap on and off of the iPhone 12. For cases, this includes new silicone, leather, and clear cases that easily snap onto the back of the iPhone. There's also a separate leather wallet accessory.

In regards to chargers, there's a MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo Charger that accommodates both the iPhone 12 and Apple Watch. Apple confirmed that more third-party MagSafe accessories will launch later this year as well.

Any mention of wattage on the charging? I've heard the word high speed thrown about but no number

OOPS, in the first line. 15W! that's pretty sweet

Doesn't this mean it will now work with any magnet docking system?

I used to use a stick on wallet on the back of the phone but with the introduction of wireless charging I went with literally a rubber band as my front pocket wallet. At least this will allow me to go back to the one piece phone/wallet I preferred in the past as long as the magnet proves to be strong enough on the back of the phone and the back of a case. Just remove for charging, put back on afterwards.

This is the opposite of what MagSafe used to be. MagSafe protected your device from flying across the room by being weak. These magnets are so strong if you snag a cable your phone will fly for miles.
Yeah, but mostly will be on cases, home or car docks/mounts. So strong hold of the phone is key.

Tim: "I like the Magsafe idea, but how do we get people to buy these expensive, high-margin magnetic chargers?"
Joz: "We ship the iPhone without a charger and use that to convince the customer to buy the new charger when they buy the phone."

I like to pay more for great new functionality. That's how commerce works.

The new dual charger looks great, but now you need 2 hands to pick up your phone? It looks like you'll need to use a 2nd hand to hold the charger down (or pull it off after picking up the phone). And what happens if your watch is charging on the other half of that dual charger, it gets tipped over if you don't push down on the charger soon enough?

Hope nobody puts a magnetic stripe card in the wallet or it's game over for it.

their promo video explicitly showed an apple card in the pouch... and it definitely has a magnetic stripe.

maybe it is safe due to the fact that the magnet is a ring and when the magnet is attached the field is attenuated? IDK. ask any juggalo and they'll tell you no one knows how magnets work!

So the iPhone 13 will be the first port less one if this reaches its logical conclusion...
Yeah, MR reported this as rumor. I hope so. Not too much of a need for a cable anymore. And then no need to upgrade all cables to USB-C. Also more secure, as exploits often over USB.

I'm sure we will all learn a deft maneuver where we pick up the phone and push off from the charger at once. Or maybe it's a twist and then the new alignment of magnet pole opposition creates a repulsive force?

Strangely, on apple.com, it says that the new MagSafe charger is compatible with iPhone 11 too? Is that really true?

It's just a QI charger, of course it is compatible.

There are no magnets in your 11 though, it won't "stick" through magnetic attraction.
