You know if you just, you know, INCLUDED THE CHARGER IN THE BOX INSTEAD OF MAKING PEOPLE BUY IT SEPARATELY, you wouldn't have this problem. Or if you're gonna not include the charger, then give people a charger for free.

You only have yourself to blame Apple

Is it though? Any Lightning iPhone charger bought since 2012 works on the iPhone 14, there was no need to upgrade. That changes with the 15. The group without USB-C chargers may not be insignificant.
Again, there is no "lightning charger". The USB-A 5 watt charger (or any other charger with a USB-A port for that matter) will still work with the iPhone 15 provided you have the right cable.
But more likely people have a more recent iPhone or other device using USB-C.

Actually there were many complaints here in the forum that Apple would still bundle the 5 watt charger with iPhones capable of fast charging. This was years ago. So I stick with my argument that most people would simply not use this imaginary dongle.

All those Lightning cables being put in landfills... Sad!
Or...
- keep your old phone and keep using your cable
- sell it with your old phone
- use it to charge a Magic Keyboard/Mouse
- use it to charge your AirPods
- bring it to the Apple Store for recycling
No need to put it in the landfill really.

Wasn't the whole point of this (EU) law to reduce duplication & waste, & to encourage one standard?

So why is environmental-caring Apple encouraging people to buy another charger that they probably don't need and will create more waste?

Why does Apple get to have "MFi-certified USB-C" with additional features?

Apple is doing the "embrace & extend" strategy that worked so well for Microsoft back in the day. This should be illegal. If a company wants to improve a standard, then you make it part of the standard, not just pin-compatible.

Otherwise, we have exactly the same amount of e-waste as before.

The dongle would be probably useless for 80+ percent of people buying an iPhone.

- People new to iPhone switching from Android most likely have USB-C
- People upgrading from a recent iPhone use USB-C on the charger side now
- People using a MacBook that is not vintage have a fast charging USB-C adaptor
- People buying their first phone are well advised to buy a charger that fits their device

So this $2 dongle would be one pile of immediate e-waste.
Not quite as large as the Mount Everest sized pile of soon to be redundant Lightning chargers, cables & accessories though.

Apple is a company in the market to make money. So obviously they want to sell you stuff. This should not come as a surprise. Of course they prefer you buying their charger over some other device.
It is also a good thing that Apple Store employees are pointing out that an iPhone buyer would need a USB-C charging brick because none is provided in the box. The reason why none is in the box is regulation by some countries, namely the EU.
Nowhere in the original article is it said that employees should be pushing for sales of chargers customers don't need.

RE: included chargers

There are a billion smartphones sold every year. If every smartphone included a charger... that would mean a billion chargers would have to be produced.

Then next year a billion more chargers will have to be produced. And the following year another billion chargers would have to be produced. And so on.

And we're not even talking about 3rd party chargers from Anker and whatnot... and the cheap chargers that are available in every gas station and drug store on the planet.

That's a lot of chargers... and factories that have to produce them. When will enough be enough?

I get it though. You buy a new phone and you're upset that it doesn't come with a charger. How dare they!

On the other hand... there are a lot of chargers out in the world. Too many probably. And more being produced every day.

:p

By "Lightning charger" I meant the 5W brick and cable combo. Like you said the biggest difference is you can't reuse those like before. I feel like most users would just plug it in and if it works they won't look for something different.

Agreed that there's no need for Apple to have a dongle, that in itself would create more waste.

Why exactly does the new iPhone make old cables redundant? (And again, there are no Lightning chargers)

This isn't new. They'v been doing this since they removed the charger from the box. I remember when they first removed it and I went to pick up my iPhone on launch day. The staff was insistent that I needed their charging brick to get the maximum effectiveness and charging speed for my new iPhone. I declined.
What do you use to charge your phone then? The 20 watt does charge the phone so much faster.

Um… what problem?
For Apple, this is literally the opposite of a problem. They get to sell you another $20 thing.

Also, even if they never removed the brick from the box, they would be required to next year, as that’s a part of the EU law.

Got 6 of these over a year ago for iPad. My older charging blocks are fine. Multi-port (A & C) charges are naturally larger, and heavier. A standard A charge block works fine with A-C cables or one of these transition blocks.

I already bought a few usb-a to usb-c connectors where I’ll need them (like for CarPlay). I don’t intend on buying another usb-c adapter, the ones I have should be good.

Then buy one for a couple of bucks. Shouldn't be hard to find one.

Yep, just checked and actually the smarter way would be getting a few USB-A to USB-C adapters. Those are small and can be used with older cars, laptops, etc. You can get a pack of three for about 10€/$.

most people who already have the 2020 macbook and newer can just use the same 30w brick instead of buying a new one. yeah it may not charge at faster speeds but will charge nonetheless. at least thats my plan

Kinda strange to me that they don't have some kind of charging recycling program where you can bring in your old usb A plugs to get a couple bucks off a new apple certified usb-c one.
That way unnecessary e-waste is reduced and everyone has what they need to use their phones

I doubt you are reducing e-waste. It just becomes someone else’s problem.

They do recycle for free yes.

But it'd be nice if they incentivized people to do it, by offering a discount off the new cable. I mean if they actually cared about the environment like they said. Because without a discount, a lot of people will just toss that old cable into the garbage.
So what you are saying is YOU don't care about the environment, not Apple who has spent billions for environmental efforts...\_(ツ)_/¯

It's like you think everything will last forever. lol. At least the recycling is an option.
