it seems like apple is thinking there is a segment of the population that refuse to buy computers online. There is no other reason to go out of your way and offer a service where you go online...reserve the product...then go to the store...and pay for it..

Makes a helluva lot of sense. It's a great idea.

That's one tiny laptop sitting next to the nano there...

Hmm! ;)

Apple + Walmart

LOL. No kidding... as I was reading this post an ad for Walmart's "Site to Store" program ran on TV.

Wow, welcome to the new millennium, Apple. It's nice to see you've finally added this option which has been available at other retailers for years. :)

you might feel different if you worked the back room of an apple store. if all the stories are to be believed, not only are they unpacking shipments but they are now juggling iphone reservations from start at homes, these reservations, running product to the sales floor and at some stores, carrying product to customer's cars.

i can't imagine the nightmare this will all be for them. especially when you consider that they probably don't have huge spaces to hold all these reservations AND the regular stock

Nice but incomplete solution

Nice, but I'd rather be able to build-to-order from the Apple online store and have it shipped to my local Apple retail store for pick up. Don't like the idea of a $2500 computer sitting on my front step all afternoon while I'm at work and it's not always feasible to have it delivered to work and carry it home.

Every time I go into an Apple store I always know exactly what I want and just want to check out. But the genius bar is for answers/repairs which means you have to somehow get the attention of one of the wandering young hip staffers. I ALWAYS have trouble getting their attention and wonder why they don't just assign tickets when you walk in. As it is, it is rather awkward and sometimes just plain frusturating.

If I were a 20 year old drop dead gorgeous female we wouldn't be having this conversation ;)

Really? Every time I go to an Apple store (Usually Greensboro, or Durham, NC) I usually have to fend off 2 or 3 employees trying to help me when Im just browsing. They seem more then willing to help.

I think it depends on how busy your local Apple Store is. There's 3 within a ~5 mile radius here. I don't usually go to the busiest one (Ala Moana) because I always have to wait for an available staffer. There's usually always someone waiting for me at the slower one.

Inventory control

Seems more like a way to control their inventory, and get an advanced idea of how many units, and where they will be needed a month or so before they are needed.

I like the idea of Building it online, and then having it sent to a store for pick-up.

I wonder what happens if you order one, and then don't end up buying it?

The Apple Store at the Fair Oaks Mall (Fairfax, VA area) is HORRIBLE at this. They get a ton of lookyloo traffic, but damned if I have not ended up leaving multiple times after standing around for 10 mins like a douche with my product in hand. I freaking hate that store. The AS at Reston Town Center is just as busy, but their staff actually seems to have a clue.

Where is the Link on Apple

I see the link in the article, and it appears to be working, but I sure as hell can't find the link on the Apple website home page or on the Apple Store site. Where are they hiding this for people who haven't read MacRumors...?

Wait...why not just order it now? Is there an advantage to having to pick it up later? (unless you don't have to pay now)

I guess it's ideal for people buying as a present for a family member and don't want to have to try and hide a 27" iMac in the house, or have FedEx etc. turn up when the recipient is at home. They can leave picking it up 'til the last minute.

Funny, it says this promo is prominently featured on the UK on-line store, but I can't see it; plenty of Xmas promos, but not this one

Small tidbit. Picked up an 8 gig itouch for gf last night for anniversary. You can exchange for in store credit till January 5 I believe. Not exact on the date but its in January. Still 14 day cash back. And there is a ten percent restock fee. It works out well cause I will "lose" my gf iPod before Christmas and get her a 32 gig.

Finally! :)

Whenever I try buying at the Apple store, my credit card is rejected because of anti-fraud measures. Then they say I can't write a check from the same account, and I end up having to show them my driver's license and calling the bank to force the transaction.

I prefer to buy right from the store because I don't trust delivery people. (No offense, amigos.)

This solves everything hopefully.

nope. i put in a reserve on a quad core when I saw they were shipping. no money collected. you pay in the store. so if you are having trouble with an account you need to talk to the bank about why they keep flagging your card for Apple Store purchases, especially if you are going to the same store all the time.

of course we all saw this coming, just to top off their money scheme like microsh*t

Couldn't agree more. This service would be brilliant for us (there is never anyone at home to sign for the stuff when they try and deliver during the day), but I want to get the i7 iMac, which as far as I can see you can't spec using this service.

They just need to take it that one step further to get it right...
