Hey Apple, AIDS peaked in the late 90s. If you'd like to support a more relevant (and severe) problem why not make a green climate change awareness day?

there is no such thing as white apples in nature.(correct me if I'm wrong) It's mostly red and green or a mix of the two colors. Definitely not the white apple in Apple's logo.

I've never been able to understand why Apple's logo hasn't always been red. Is it to avoid being called the Snow White Apple company?

Asking the right things!

Until the total number of new cases, deaths, and people living with AIDS hits zero, the fight is not over.

Also, isn't Earth Day the green climate change awareness day? They celebrate that.

Well done Apple!
I think it is a great that Apple take the lead on this issue and wish more companies would put their weight behind a good cause and use the muscle fort the greater good!

Which greater good are you referring too? There are many other things in the world more important.

You think that they would just have their signs be able to change to any colour, computer-controlled.

It's a vinyl overlay.

I don't think they really push the whole Product (Red) thing outside of the US. My local store has never really had a red logo change, as far as I can remember. I think they turned it green once for their eco drive.

But then, it's a relatively small and insignificant branch.

The Article is wrong. There are 498 Apple stores in the world, and nowhere near 400 got red logos. Lazy reporting. The majority of stores got window graphics / signage.

Also, this was done around the world, not just in the US.

and i'm wearing my red logo Apple T-shirt :)
I never knew Apple could just change the logo color like that.

The (RED) initiative has raised more than $365 million to date to stop AIDS in Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Zambia. Funds raised by (RED) are donated to The Global Fund, a group that works to end AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria as epidemics.

It should be noted that 2/3 of The Global Fund's funds are lost to corruption:

Product red iPod nano out today and iPhone 6S product red case

It is good to donate money to charity, but I'm not fond of their red products.
It would be better if they donated a percentage of their profits during one day, for example black friday or yesterday, for every product sold, not just the red ones.
But that's just a thought, I usually donate directly to charity without buying products from Apple or other companies.

A lead? You are kidding right?

Bill and Melinda gates are going to match the total of what Red raises this year..

So many American companies donate so much more, without going on about it..

Apple will pay 1 dollar for every purchase made from thier app store or apple.com.
It safe to assume Apple will profit from thier lame philanthropic attempt.

Why don't they just give the foundation money from thier massive pile of cash?
I know they give more away that this one time event but stop spending money to tell people about it an just give it.

Charity with a caveat....

Tim Cook has previously stated he will give away 800 million before he dies, which is awesome.

Another charity thread, another load of comments saying Apple aren't doing enough because others are doing more. Sorry, that's not how charity works.

You give what you want, and any donation - no matter how big or small - is appreciated.

Well done Apple for doing this, the ProductRED program is great - keep up the good work!

How does wearing your red sport band or using your red iPhone case help cure AIDS? Don't they want you to go buy something new so you are donating?

The communist would say that's all an illusion by the capitalists (Read:Tim, Eddy, and Phil) to make consumers feel empowered by the idea they're making an actual difference. But when you realize that only a fraction of the money you pay goes to the foundation, then after the administrative and additional fees, only a fraction of that fraction goes directly to the people with HIV/AIDS. That's why I always say if you are passionate about something, play a direct role in in instead of adding to the lining of their pockets of those who have plenty to spare. And no shame or disrespect to wealthy, but the issues faced by people with HIV/AIDS and them are comparing :apple: to oranges :p

I wonder if the rainbow apple logo will be seen again?
wouldn't it be amazing if they made a special anniversary mac with the rainbow logo - they'd sell millions!!

All I have to do is put on a red shirt for 1 day a year and that will help cure AIDS??? Nice. Awareness rules! My pink ribbon on my car is also helping to cure cancer. I love being aware!

I don't think you quite get it so let me try to explain. People with HIV/AIDS have been victimized for simply having a disease. This campaign was designed to help educate people about the disease to try to alleviate the horrible treatment those suffering from it were receiving. it also raises money for the Global Fund thru its partners.

This stuff sort of victimized them again for profit under a flag of support. Apple makes a product in red then gives a tiny amount away. It is a sales and marketing tool at this point. Apple spends tons of money on ads, gets tons of people through the door, and sells a bunch of red items for a large profit margin. It's disgusting that everyone is using these people for profit. Need proof...here is a quote from Wikipedia:

Data released in 2007 by Advertising Age claimed retail participants in Product Red including Gap, Motorola and Apple had invested $100 million in advertising and raised only $18 million for The Global Fund.

It's all about the $$$$. Does it help, sure, but not as much as it could or should. It is just another way to sell junk to people. It also helps to sneak the subconscious "feel good" feeling that Apple is good. Helps very much with future non-red sales. Marketing marketing marketing!

Is "World AIDS Day" really the best they could come up with? Wouldn't the word "awareness" be good to fit in there somewhere?

Maybe, but not for this campaign.

I will not donate to certain 'charities' because all they do is awareness campaigning. While awareness has its value, the Ice Bucket Challenge from last year comes to mind, many awareness campaigns, AIDS and breast cancer for example, are past the awareness stage and a vast majority of the money should be raised and spent on treatments and cures.

Spot on. This is all about product placement, brand awareness and fanboy culture.

Because colored logos don't look good on products that come in a variety of colors. Their brand image is simplicity. White is the most basic form of color because it is all colors of the visual spectrum combined into one. Black is also simple because it's the absence of color. Many companies set their own brand colors for specific reasons. There aren't a lot of examples of companies that use food as their logo that aren't related to the food industry which is more focused on realism, but off the top of my head sports teams do this all the time. For example: bulls aren't red, lions aren't blue, sharks aren't green, ravens aren't purple, giants aren't real.

Very good. Always loved the Product Red stuff.
