I signed up for .Mac on yesterday in anticipation of MobileMe but it's not working great for me. I can't get my contacts to sync. If the new service does not fix this I won't be able to subscribe.

Hm, so basically, have the online Mail app be able to act as a POP/IMAP client accessing another email account? Well, a) I doubt it, but b) that would be awesome if it could (especially IMAP)!

The stupid thing is that the iPhone does all of that (as does Mac Mail), so to have the same functionality missing in .mac / Mobile Me has always seemed real strange to me. Perhaps it is something they've addressed in the revamped online mail but there is nothing to suggest it has been.

Not really a problem for me as I'm happy using my iPhone for email, so the lack of online functionality doesn't cause me an issue.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

from-line customization would be a must-have for personal domain owner

Now Google might be preparing an iPhone app that uses the push technology for a permanent connexion to sync our calendar and contacts direcly with the iPhone

from-line customization would be a must-have for personal domain owner

Agreed.

Well, come to think of it I never really email people anyway, I just use it for notifications, newsletters and stuff so in most cases nobody would notice.

But that's not the point - I have a domain, and I'm tired of making "wellll.. I don't reeeeally need xyz" sacrifices when it comes to Apple. It'd be so nice if for once in their lives they'd provide a product/service without requiring sacrifices (when compared to every other equivalent out there)

I've decided to join .mac (mobile me)... any reason not to go ahead and purchase from Amazon now and upgrade in July?

Get the free trial and reserve the username you want before all the windows iPhone people come along and snap up all the good ones. The user base is still small, but people are already going for the trial, so get your username now. Costs you nothing.

Probably the wrong end of the stick, but can't you do this already in .mac?

That preference will let you pull email from another POP account, but you can't reply to the email from the same POP account. And even if you could, you then have your sent mail scattered between those you send from your client application on your Mac and those you sent from the online app.

I like the look of the new online mail app, but the simple fact of the matter is I've had the same email address for nearly 15 years now, through many moves, ISP changes, etc. My .Mac/MobileMe address will NEVER become my primary email address. It will always be just a secondary address. I currently use Gmail as an online mail app because it allows me to both retrieve and send email from my primary address. But it's uses POP to retrieve my email and it doesn't automatically check frequently enough. And I also end up with my sent mail split between locations. IMAP would be better, but I don't know how server intensive it would be for an online app to act as an IMAP client, constantly checking other services for new mail (like Mail on my Mac does).

Google apps sync

Apple should really consider a tiered service. Perhaps $49/year for the sync services and online apps (mail, contacts, calendar), and $49/year the rest (web pages, photo galleries, idisk). Why? Because with a one-time purchase of a 3rd party app (BusySync) you can sync your iCal to a free Google Calendar. The same company is about to release the same functionality for Address Book contacts. And you can use Gmail to check and send mail from practically any other email address. You could even use BusySync to sync multiple Macs to the same Google calendar or contacts list as a substitute for Apple's Mac-to-Mac syncing.

So a one-time $25 purchase could replace an ongoing $99/year expense and cover most of what the majority of people use .Mac for, and they would never miss not having web publishing, etc. $99 is a good price IF you use all or most of the services, but most people don't, or wouldn't if they were a member. And I think Apple would get enough new people who would have never signed up at $99 to make up for lost revenue from the lower price.

With the new MobileMe stuff I hope they add a feature SOON to IWeb so that you can make your site a Iphone/Touch compatible. that would be awesome..

honestly,
I just don't like "me.com" it's kinda stupid. Mobile Me?

kinda sounds like someone at apple has been smoking some of whatever those bozo's at silly startups had rolled.

Just doesn't resonate nicely. Also, aside from syncing services for macs and iphones, why does the .mac service need a name change?

THIS IS KINDA LAME. yes push email, and sync services are nice, but they could do alot more to upgrade .mac!!!

least of which is a silly name change.

I know, the new name doesn't sound all that great to me either. However, I firmly believe Apple changed the name to make it more platform-neutral than ".Mac" was, and hence make it more marketable to non-Mac users.

Yeah, it does seem a bit of a lame name. I'd prefer to have an @mac.com address really - it's a little badge of Mac Pride

Still, we'll get used to it. It only seems 5 minutes since we were all going "WTF" to the Macbook Air name and saying "no, that name can't be true it's too silly" etc. Seems normal now.

$99?

I'm sorry, but but MobileMe seems wildly overpriced from what you get. What am I missing?

Why don't they just outsource the service to google for a slice of the ad revenue?

I am not currently a .Mac user, but I'm considering becoming one as soon as the new features become available. On the aesthetic side... from what microsoft-dungeon did the designers of this unfortunate logo escape?

I think apple botched by renaming the entire .Mac Service as Mobile Me

There are many of us who don't care about iPhone syncing, or even if we do have an iphone, we don't care about that more than the other MAC oriented services, website hosting, printing services and more.

by going to such a iphone oriented name, you are alienating many very productive uses for .Mac. they are burying functionality, even if they dont get rid of it.

they ought to have kept .Mac, added Mobile Me as a subset function. but under the .Mac umbrella.

Can someone answer this for me? My current .mac account expires in 64 days. I have a retail box for another year. If I activate it now, will it add a year on to the 64 days I have left (429 days total)? Or will it begin today as the new day 1?

Basically I want it activate it before this mobileme thing starts so there is no "sorry, that is no longer valid" surprises when I try to activate it in 2 months. I know that they will roll current .mac memberships into mobileme, which is why I want to activate it now.

Maybe the 3rd posting of this will get me an answer, any answer

Does anyone have any idea about this? If I activate the code I have, will it add an additional year onto the 63 days I have left, or will my subscription start over today, with 364 days left

Apple sending out Me.com upgrade info

Apple is currently sending the following email out to .Mac users:

Dear .Mac member:

Today Apple announced a new Internet service called MobileMe - taking the best of .Mac and adding a host of new features. As a current .Mac member, your account will be automatically upgraded to MobileMe in July. For a closer look, watch the MobileMe Guided Tour and read below for an overview of your new service.

Mac integration you know and love. With MobileMe, you'll continue to enjoy features that take advantage of seamless integration with Mac OS X and iLife - Back to My Mac; access to your iDisk in the Finder; Mac-to-Mac syncing of Dock items, preferences, and more; iWeb site publishing; and photo and movie sharing directly from iPhoto '08 and iMovie '08.

New web applications for when you're away from your Mac. MobileMe features a suite of web applications at www.me.com that have the familiar look and feel of the applications on your Mac. Because these web applications stay in sync with your Mac and other devices, you'll have the same information wherever you go. Here's what you'll find at me.com:

Mail, the anchor of the new suite, is even better with a refined interface.

Contacts has a new three-pane interface, contact groups, maps integration, search, and photo support.

Calendar is a brand-new web application that feels just like iCal, featuring multiple calendars, click-and-drag event creation, and more.

Gallery lets you manage your collection of shared photos and movies from anywhere. You can now upload photos, rearrange their order, and set sharing preferences, all from a browser.

iDisk now has the familiar look of the Mac OS X Finder. It features drag-and-drop filing and an easy new way to share large documents, by sending an email with a link for downloading the file.

Account lets you manage settings such as storage allocation.

To use the new web applications, make sure you have one of these browsers: Safari 3, Internet Explorer 7, or Firefox 2 or later.

Push email. Push contacts. Push calendar. In addition to Mac-to-Mac syncing, MobileMe now keeps your iPhone, your iPod touch, and even a PC in sync. MobileMe pushes new contacts, calendar items, and bookmarks to your Mac or PC, and over the air to your iPhone or iPod touch. For example, if you add a calendar event on the web, the change will automatically be pushed to your Mac and iPhone. New email will be pushed to your iPhone in seconds, eliminating the need to check for messages manually.

As a MobileMe subscriber, you can continue to use your mac.com address for email. You will also be issued a me.com address with the same user name that you can use if you prefer. The choice is yours.

Double the online storage. To give you plenty of space for your email, photos, and other files, MobileMe doubles your storage from 10GB to 20GB for an individual subscription.

We'll be sure to update you when the new service goes live. In the meantime, if you have any questions about the upcoming transition from .Mac to MobileMe, please visit the MobileMe FAQ.

Sincerely,

The MobileMe Team

Does anyone have any idea about this? If I activate the code I have, will it add an additional year onto the 63 days I have left, or will my subscription start over today, with 364 days left

It will add another year to the days you have left. It will not start over immediately. Your payment or activation (or lackthereof if you decide to discontinue your subscription) will not kick in until your renewal date arrives. Per the FAQ (mentioned above in Apple's email), .Mac activation packages will continue to work, even once the Me.com transition has kicked in; you don't have to "use it up". Basically, activate whenever you want. You only have to do it before your current subscription (63 days, did you say?) runs out, it should not be impacted by the transition. .Mac addresses and URLs will continue to work in Me.com.

how does it work?

So, here's what I'm not getting.... how does it push to my Mac?

I totally get the iPhone push... but if I at at my office, and make a change on my calendar via the web app, how will it show up on home mac? Currently, I have my Mac "syncing" once/day. Will I need to tell it to update differently? How will it push to my mac "instantly"?

Also, as I have a POP account, I was thinking about either a)not checking it, and having .mac retrieve it or b)forwarding the account to the .mac account. That way, I would have the "push" ability with my regular home account.
