Yeah this is what’s holding me back too. Would love to put a few on shared stuff but it’s way less appealing without family sharing support.A family set of car keys requires the owner to find it regardless who has the car or the keys to have an air tag for every family member on the keychain 🤦🏻♂️
I have them on my various sets of keys, backpack, wallet, etc. not so much anti theft as anti-“where the hell did I put that thing”. Also keep one in my luggage when I travel, it’s been helpful more than once there.Someone please outline what the functional, intended purpose(s) of AirTag is at this point.
On a phone go to "Find My" app. Then go to Items and select the air tag you want to check. Then when it brings up the info page for it, tap again on the words "With you" and you can see the serial number and firmware version. How do you know what firmware version you have
The article does indeed mention 2.0.36.This article is a bit dated… I’m on firmware 2.0.36
they’re pushing everyone towards third party trackers with these updates. At this point the only reason to mayyybe buy AirTags over say, chipolo or eufy trackers is AR spatial positioning and maybe build quality. And having the thing beep works just fine; the spacial positioning is pretty much just a gimmick. So stupid.

and, you know, the fact that I don't need to share the location of things like my keys and wallet with third partiesthey’re pushing everyone towards third party trackers with these updates. Or any family member - my wife gets annoyed any time she grabs my wallet (so quite often).Just give us family sharing! Think of the children!
I think, there is zero chance for that - for Apple the potential reputation damage from stalking is much bigger than anything they can earn with theft tracking. As consumers...we speak loudest with our wallets. We (that is, the segment of consumers that no longer find this product useful) need to let Apple know that we will no longer buy these until they implement Family Sharing.
Maybe, if there are enough of us...we can make motivate Apple to do the right thing.
Agree. As a purchaser of the device when it was originally released, I feel they have changed the feature set to a point whereby it is no more delivering the value I originally paid for. I know Apple will use privacy protection at a justification and I understand the concerns, but then it is their responsibility for not considering this in the first place and releasing an unsustainable device (and they should offer refunds instead of killing the features original buyers were expecting for the price they paid).
Wondering if in some countries this could lead to cases with consumer protection agencies (a key point here is that Apple is auto updating the device and not giving any option for the user to preserve the original feature set).
If you want to dissect their marketing slogans, I'm afraid there really isn't much there. "Keep track of" isn't identical to "locate". Even with this new "feature", Airtags will help you distinguish between whether your stuff was stolen or whether you simply misplaced it.Apple markets AirTags as "keep track of your items"… Clearly, this has been run past their legal team who probably came up with this phrase and this covers you personally losing something or having someone steal it. So the argument that they don't market airtags as "anti-theft" is nebulous at best.
The Airtags will still tell you whether the luggage was left behind or stolen. The difference is that it will be much harder to locate it if it was stolen with this update. However, if it was stolen during baggage handling, you will have stronger case for making a claim, since you will know whether it was stolen by a handler or at the baggage claim area. You can also report it stolen much quicker, and identify the point at which it was stolen. You won't be able to pinpoint the current location. But, you weren't going to actually going to hunt down your stolen bags yourself, were you?I do have an Airtag with my home keys, other than that I use Airtags for luggage tracking while traveling. For cases like lost luggage, luggage left behind, or stolen. So far I haven't had any of this happen, but Airtags have still been useful to let me know whether a piece of luggage made it into the plane, or is still at the hotel, etc. Pretty useful for extra peace of mind. I don't like firmware changes that are detrimental to these use cases. However, I also don't like Airtags being used to stalk or commit other crimes against people. For now I have some Airtags in the 301 and some that that have been upgraded to 24 and some to 36.
