Atmos is exclusive to the 4K - new aerials are on all models. I don’t think you can choose which aerials you want, no.
We don't know that yet. Apple is advertising that the 4K is the first streaming box that is both "Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos certified", that doesn't mean Dolby Atmos won't be enabled on the ATV 4th gen. w/tvOS 12. (tvOS 11 brought FLAC to ATV 4th gen.). ...as Atmos is not in the first beta of tvOS 12, we won't know for sure until a later beta.

AFAIK all of the studios only release the Atmos tracks with UHD movies - same as HDR, it's essentially a 4K-exclusive feature. It would not be smart for Apple to waste the money licensing Atmos on devices that don't play UHD in the first place, and they pretty explicitly said Apple TV 4K during the keynote. They didn't mention the 4th generation at all.

That’s not entirely correct. I can’t speak for ATMOS, but HDR encoding is available on 1080p movies, and is just as effective as a 4K movie. All of Netflix and Apple programs offered in DV or HDR will be displayed for 1080p versions as well as 4K. Amazon’s do not at this point, but that is likely to change if that is the industry norm.

Fair enough. The studios are doing their best to associate 4K with HDR and Atmos, though. They want people to adopt the new format.

Curious. The community blasted Apple for Atmos. We got it. Where were all of you when Apple unleashed HD back in the day? Why didn’t you scream for Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio support? These formats were saturated in Blu-ray HD.

All of Nolan’s films are are DTSMA. Atmos will do nothing for those. We’re stuck with the horrid DD5.1 for those films. Many other great films too.

Audio is 50% of any presentation.

They did. Go back and read the threads.

You caught me out with "DTSMA" - I thought at first it was Internet shorthand - couldn't figure it out until I Googled it & realised it was of course DTS-MA (Brain not functioning at full efficiency. Obviously I need more Coffee!)
However, the other hit was for the "David Thibodaux Stem Magnet Academy" which helps students "implement strategies and activities to support and maximize each student’s ability to learn". So not a totally wasted search! :D

Yes, HDR & Atmos* are being used as marketing points, however, the tech is not limited to 4K/UHD content. While there
aren't any 1080p TVs that are capable of reproducing HDR, (that I know of), if you have an iPhone 8/8+ or X, or one of the most recent iPad Pro models, you can stream HDR content on those devices, (but, not at 4K resolution).

Transformers Age of Extinction 1080p blu-ray released in September of 2014 was the first blu-ray disc with Dolby Atmos, Gravity Diamond Luxe edition came out in 2015 w/Dolby Atmos, there are a few other titles that came out with Atmos audio before 4K/UHD discs started coming out also. Some studios release both the 4K/UHD & 1080p blu-ray discs with Dolby Atmos tracks, i.e. Blade Runner 2049, Wonder Woman, Star Trek Beyond, Deep Water Horizon, etc.

In 2015 HBO began releasing Game Of Thrones 1080p blu-rays with Dolby Atmos and went back and re-released previous seasons w/Dolby Atmos mixes on them.

So, it's not that it's not possible, it's just that they are using these for 4K/UHD marketing. (Also, what audio tracks are found on blu-ray discs depends on what licensing agreements/contracts the studios have with Dolby or DTS.)

So, for iTunes at least, whatever is available, if HDR10 or Dolby Vision, that will be available with the title, if Dolby Atmos is available, that will be available for that title, so, when you rent/buy, whatever your device is capable of streaming, the highest quality available, that is what you'll get out of iTunes, (except if you buy/rent SD). (Yes, Netflix and other apps can be updated to take advantage of Dolby Atmos.)

So, with all of that said, yes, I think Apple will add Dolby Atmos capability to the ATV 4th generation, however, we won't know for sure until it shows up in tvOS 12 beta.

*For UHD discs technically "Immersive audio" is the marketing point, that can be Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, however, not all discs will have immersive audio.

Apple said Apple TV will be the only device to support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. There are other devices that support Dolby Atmos but not Dolby Vision.

Actually Apple said the ATV 4K will be the only device to support DV & DA.

There are two Apple TVs currently available:

ATV 4th generation (2015) 1080p A8 processor
ATV 4K (2017) 2160p A10X processor

The both use the same tvOS.

Regardless of what Apple says to promote their newest products (in all categories), the latest OS will bring some new features, (not all), to all devices you can install them on. Both the ATV 4th gen & ATV 4K have the same audio capabilities. So, it is possible the 4th gen. could utilize Dolby Atmos audio.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t bring DV to the 4th gen too, since iTunes offers DV on all of their 1080p movies where DV is otherwise offered with 4K. Netflix likewise decodes DV for its 1080p streams, where otherwise offered. I suppose it’s possible even that’s too much for the A8.

I assume most cable companies will be converting over to IPTV for this (most already use it anyway). You will connect your cable to your cable modem and then ethernet to your cable box of choice. In this case, it appears it will be an app on the Apple TV. I hope other cable companies can adopt this as well and charter doesn't have some exclusivity agreement with apple. When I lived in Switzerland this is how my cable box connected - via DSL, through my DSL modem and then out via ethernet to the cable box.

Which makes me wonder if Apple TV and iPhone/iPad will ever support ATSC 3.0?!
