How would this be achieved? Assuming it wasn’t just a software limitation in the first place...

Could the update include firmware for the SMC to increase the electrical voltage to the display or something like that?

You’re WILDLY overestimating consumer purchasing decisions if you honestly think an average person has any idea what a nit is.

Perhaps, but I think a growing number of consumers are becoming more informed about tech specs. Look at the popularity of YouTube tech channels like Linus Tech Tips, Marques Brownlee, and many others. They’re pretty mainstream. Even MacRumors is a top website for all things Apple, and these forums are full of tech savvy consumers.

I mean really, how much more would it cost to give it a P3 gamut?

I won't buy an Apple product that includes a display without it (except for the Watch, but who cares about color gamut on an Apple Watch).

An a completely different note, I think it would be nice if the apple watch had a true tone display and adapted to your phones night shift state

Okay, I guess that explains why, since updating to 10.14.4, I’m getting the jagged, scrabbled screen when I wake my older MBA. Better than the Software Is Updating Bar screen I was getting. But, really, I’d rather they fix it right.

And why the hell can’t they just make it 14.4 already?

The reason they don't give it a P3 gamut is because they want you to buy a Pro if you want that feature. It's Marketing 101. Want more? Then spend more.

Do you think they will kill off non touch Mac Pros? Right now the 2017s offer more for the same price. Actually at Best Buy a week ago, the 2017 Pros were a better deal than the airs. I wanted the air but there was no convincing reason for me to get one. Especially when at the time the Pro had the brighter display and better color gamut- whatever that means.

Even with this improvement, I like the older Macbook Air more.
Wait what?

Not going to be satisfied until the screen can vaporize debris trapped under the keys.

EDIT: Never mind, the difference is amazing!

Is this photoshopped? You should really tell people because I honestly thought these were two pictures comparing the difference. But it appears to be photoshopped. Could you please context your post with a joke label?

They'll however have no problem seeing a dim screen vs a non dim screen in a store. There's a reason demo TV's are on a demo setting with bright and vibrant colours.

I didn't notice the change in brightness at all. What I did notice? My keyboard is still absolutely 100% garbage. The machine is only a month old and I've had several keycaps replaced already. My previous 2013 MBP went 6 years without needing ANY service. This machine is only a month old and has been serviced once already (didn't really help) and I would absolutely return it if I could.

I never considered the brightness an issue. I actually like to keep the brightness as low as humanly possible to avoid wiping out my eyes. My rule of thumb is, "no brighter than a piece of paper"....i.e., I hold a piece of paper up next to the screen and lower the brightness down to match it. 100% brightness is more of a Vegas demo feature to me.

For background, I originally bought my 2018 Macbook Air out of frustration that there was no new update to the 12" Macbook. I just wanted something light for my commute on a bicycle, but refused to only have 1 USB-C port, so I got the MBA. As it turns out, I find the keyboard so much nicer to type on than the one on my wife's 2016 MacBook Pro, and it surprisingly handles most of my video production needs while on the go. I eventually move these movie projects to a more powerful iMac, and that's ok with my expectations. The only weird thing I've found is how slow it handles editing photos in the Mojave Photos app. Adjusting sliders for shadow, definition, etc... used to be a snap in Mavericks, but it's molasses for Mojave. Other than that, love the MBA!

I wonder what impact a forced 33% increase in overall brightness on the same hardware, will have on battery life.

Did they update battery estimates too? lol somehow doubt it

Not impressed. Looks like they screwed with the gamma as well

Put an OLED and a decent keyboard in it, even if the laptop is now .5MM thicker. Anyone who buys a current generation butterfly keyboard will come to regret it.

I've got the mid-2013 MacBook Air, still going strong, but I'm due for an upgrade of the internal storage. I could upgrade that myself, but considering a new laptop. Do you recommend *against* replacing it with a 2018 MacBook Air because of the keyboard?

I like the updated keyboard, but I don't eat cookies while typing.

I sadly do enjoy my unhealthy snacks while working at the laptop. Not to mention my unsanitary human body that is constantly shedding dead skin and hair... this stuff has to go somewhere! My left Option key is no longer working, likely due to debris.

That was fun to type.

Cute, blame the user. That you, Timmy?

Apple to soon fix their butterfly keyboard and make them fly away via update. :D
It's called a butterfly keyboard because it's thin, beautiful, and dies if you touch it too much.

And, amazingly, the last generation of keyboard could handle life outside a sterile cleanroom environment without getting jammed up and breaking.
