I presently live in India, and the situation with telemarketers and spam text messages is just egregious. I have never received a single spam text message in the US, but at least one daily is par for the course here. Spam calls are common, too, regardless of whether or not you registered on their Do Not Disturb online registry.

I don't see how this app is really going to improve the situation where your cellphone number is obviously being sold to third parties already.
The US has also gotten very bad in the last couple of years. Call Protect let's me know about 5-10 telemarketers/spammers each day.
It's just too easy to get a burner number these days.

"no company can be allowed to be the guardian of a user's data."

Really?

Nice try, you don't know India nor their government.
From your vast experience and knowledge could you enlighten me with facts and links to stories on the web that would support your implication that India's government is working against its citizens.

How is this different than the AT&T call protect app?

Could you possibly send me a screenshot of the app being in App Store in US? I'd send that to TRAI here to bolster their case. This is clearly dual standards.

Spam calling and texting is a huge menace here and while there are rules there are always circumventions and this cold calling by marketers needs to end. However, these guys in the government can't be trusted at all. Any government. They should first rap the service provider for distributing and selling the data.

I own property/houses/cars in India but that doesn't mean i live in India.

I'm not questioning your property ownership, I'm questioning your knowledge of Your original statement I bolded in Post #1. I'm not seeing the correlation of your knowledge of commerce and trade. Again, you say you don't live in India, but you have input otherwise based off their economy? Thats like me making a claim about one state I live in and comment on another state's commerce without having experience to make any claims. Naturally, one would find your Post skeptical.

I'm not 100% sure I believe that big companies have our personal interests at heart. Yes, they are selling consumers goods and in theory we would only buy goods that we are comfortable with. But, remember the company's goal is to take as much money from us for each item they sell. They don't "care" which item it is other than that it's "popular" enough for us to give them our money. They spend millions of dollars in marketing and advertising to convince us that we should give them our money for whatever product they are pitching us. So, any "policy" affecting their target market is really about protecting their ability to get as much money out of us that we are "comfortable" with. I know it's a pretty dark spin on business, but think out about it.

I am not the all knowing as you imply, I just travelled a lot and know my way around Asia (and he world), India is in many ways a spectacular country, yet it has it's dark sides, the Indian government doesn't really care.

I've been around, know my places, just look at the shape certain countries are in and you know if the government is up to it's job or not, just common sense I guess.

Gotcha, so that I have a better idea of your perspective on governments caring and/or being up to the task, do you think it could/should be done by the US government so as to reduce spammers and hold criminally accountable those who break the law?

How about all of us not in India stop trying to tell India how to conduct their internal affairs. If the Indians want it they ought to be allowed to have it no company is special.

I think that the ATT Call Protect works differently, which is why it is carrier locked. It run mostly carrier side. I don’t think your phone is sending any data back to ATT about your call history or messages.

What does that even mean?
It seems, according to the article, that the government is trying to help consumers to block spam and Apple won't allow it.
They themselves spam others with news about prime ministers office which I didn't sign up to... :(

You must be confusing TRAI with some other ministry. TRAI regulates telecom network only.

They don't control email spams.

Yeah, got it. Thanks. But for a country like India, there should be some coherence between different departments in the government
