They could just auto-upgrade or email those customers, no other online store does this and certainly Apple won't stop you from purchasing those products in store (I assume).
I agree the store doesnt need to go down this long! But they are doing this for marketing and logistics. Logistically, to avoid the same thing you’ve mentioned. If the prices change or new model comes in a new color, then its going to be people returning. That is halted since the store is down now so no new orders..

Why not just take down the product section that is going to be refreshed? Like iPhones when 14 was coming out? Well marketing, now people are wondering what Apple is going to release since the whole thing is down.. But if it was just that section, people can guess its a new iPhone coming./

This is marketing and advertising at no cost ,so ingenious

And? As most people (I have both gens) still hardly ever use them.

Wishful that apple has found software to make a pencil more compelling to use.
I agree. I had high hopes for the pencil (had gen 1), and when I used it, it worked well. I was simply confounded in terms of the still limited scope of apps that complement the use of the pencil. In fact, I am in the market for a new iPad, and I often search for apps that seem like natural fits for pencil use. So far, I have walked away wondering whether developers know the pencil exists or favor it.

I just wish the battery lasted longer when not regularly charged. I feel like I should least get a week out of it.

Can you think of any other online store that has to handle this sort of high-profile product launch where even the most minor cockup will be headline news on every tech sites (and the national news if it's a slow day)?
  • under intense press scrutiny
  • synchronised across every continent & time-zone
  • co-ordinated with a large bricks & mortar chain who at least have to feign ignorance up to the last second and be ready to answer questions an instant later. At least the "flagship" Apple stores around the world will probably want to have displays up ready.
  • products usually available to order - or at least pre-order - immediately.
...then imagine the kerfuffle if the new product appeared on the UK site 5 minutes before the US site, how many people would order in the first 5 minutes if there were a pricing mistake... I mean there are probably currently 10,000 people around the world sitting at their computers hitting "refresh" every 10 seconds so it's probably a good thing they're only being served a holding page.

It's not a technical issue. It's marketing.
Taking the entire store down for several hours and then coming back with a handful of low-profit spec bump updates isn't going to generate anything. It's a loss. Do you know how many iPhone sales they're losing while the store is down?
