That was exactly what came up in my head as well: Forstal maybe wasn't that guilty at all!1 more down and only 3 billion places to go. I live in a major North American city and still don't have 3D maps, what now, a decade since Apple introduced 3d Maps. Not sure how Google was able to 3Dize the world so quickly and Apple is just proud to release a new 3D city a few times a year. Forstall Took the brunt of this but what is the excuse now?
Yes... I use Apple Maps. It's great that your city/town has 3D buildings. I assure you, mine does not. Our population is well over a million and we are big enough to have two Apple stores. I am not talking about the "new" improved 3D. I am talking about the original 3D buildings announced 9 1/2 years ago are still not there. All you get in my city is a flat skewed top view.Do you even use Apple Maps? Every place in the US has 3D buildings now, including small towns, and has since Apple rolled out the new map from 2018-2020. 3D buildings are available everywhere the new map is, which presently includes Canada, the UK, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. They are not as fast at rolling out the new map I and many Apple Maps fans would hope, but that's unrelated to this update.
What is being released today are more detailed 3D models and the new "city experience" and yes, they are only available in now five metros (NYC, LA, SF, London, and now DC). Google Maps similarly has more details maps of some cities, which for example will have detailed crosswalk info, but that is also relatively uncommon (Google has it in NYC, not in DC, for example).
Here's info on the "equivalent" Google feature, and it only covers four metros presently: https://support.google.com/maps/answer/10311344?hl=en
Forstall did not unveil this type of 3D map. He originally introduced a much different type of 3D maps that was pretty limited in scope, but was also all over the country. This new type of 3D map was announced last year and has only recently been rolling out. I live in Chicago, one of only 3 megacities the US will have in the 21st century, and we still don't have it. I too wish they'd hurry up, but they are such better quality than Google's Maps, I can see why it might take more time.1 more down and only 3 billion places to go. The truth is that Apple basically was the masterminds behind Google Maps when they co-created it for the iPhone, but Google wanted to keep stealing people's data so Apple didn't renew their contract, which meant they suddenly had to build everything from scratch. It certainly wasn't ideal, but honestly, the "disastrous" claims that became popularized were mostly an exaggeration. I've been using Apple Maps almost exclusively since they debuted and have maybe had a bad experience once or twice. Google has also screwed up a few times, so it's hardly been a handicap using Apple Maps.Apple has done a great job with 3D landmarks in London, UK. Also, I haven’t had any problems with driving, mass transit and walking directions. Further than London, the national rail and road information has also been good. I much prefer the look of Maps and the link with Watch is super helpful.
I say the issue is the slow expansion of this level of information and data to the rest of the country/world. The biggest issue is trust in Maps. People still don’t trust it since its disastrous debut. Apple could do more to promote Maps than just its keynotes
At least you get more Apple Maps features being in the US. Go to Mexico (or anywhere else in Latin America for that matter) and Maps becomes a complete POS: No detailed and up to date Maps, no transit directions except maybe in Mexico City, No biking directions, no indoor maps of malls and airports, no look around, no highway toll information, no 3D maps….nothing. Google Maps has had all these features in the region for years. Doesn’t Apple realize that a lot of Americans travel to Mexico, not to mention that the largest settlements of Americans living outside their country are in Mexico?1 more down and only 3 billion places to go. But not outside the US and maybe a few other english speaking and predominantly white countries. Apple needs to stop focusing so much in those regions and start looking at other regions of the world. They've been rolling it out to a lot more places lately, like suburbs of big cities.
Yes. my point is not about the "new 3D Map". My point is there are major cities that still don't have the "old limited 3d" that Forstall introduced 9 1/2 years ago. That just isn't acceptable. When Google introduces 3D over 10 years ago, they had the entire globe done in a couple of years and continued to update it regularly. Apple should be at the point where they are updating the globe on a yearly bases too but here we are without having inaugural features even implemented a decade later. But cool a few cities got some fancy new monuments while others still have roads going into lakes. Am I supposed to be impressed with this. I know its hard for some to understand this because they live in a region that has all the features and accuracy but for the rest of us, we are still waiting. Again, I stuck it out and forced myself to use Apple Maps while they catch up but the effort and priorities shown by Apple is telling me that was a mistake. This is not a priority for them in any way.Forstall did not unveil this type of 3D map. The wet part of town?
But why they don’t have street level in cities years after people have seen the cars is probably something legal or they do not want to roll out the maps if its not completed.
Poor baby. We annoy and concern you. That is until you need us then you will love us.Sometimes I regret a little bit being locked in the ecosystem of an American company. I mean, the products are great, but this whole "Murica!!" patriotism annoys and concerns me a little bit.
Unfortunately, Apple Maps is kind of useless here in Central Europe anyway (no bike routes and way fewer business markers), so 3D map is something I can totally forget anyway.
Lol Agreed.Man I have never seen such a whiny group of people. Apple Maps looks 10x better than Google Maps and is starting to navigate better yet you complain and complain and complain. Good grief.
Never mind Europe, Mexico is right next door to the US and gets even less features on Apple Maps.Sometimes I regret a little bit being locked in the ecosystem of an American company. I mean, the products are great, but this whole "Murica!!" patriotism annoys and concerns me a little bit.

Clearly you live in the US and never travel abroad. Otherwise you’d know what a POS Apple Maps becomes once you set foot outside the US because so many of its great features are available for the US only.Man I have never seen such a whiny group of people. Only thought it was in parody movies that Americans acts like this…Poor baby. We annoy and concern you. That is until you need us then you will love us.
