So...wait, so the number is actually 1-888-FACETIM? I get the feeling someone's gonna end up with an Apple rep named Tim and the guy's pic will end up all over the tubes — "this is who the number was talking about!" :D

Someone call them up and take a screenshot. All he/she'll hear is the screenshot sound. I wonder what their reaction would be!

*BOOP BOOP*
Call Finished

its good to hear that Apple is diverting customer service reps and resources to a service which basically lets users play with their iPhones while some people are still enduring really long wait times just to try and figure out basic issues like...why dont i have my phone yet even though I ordered in the early AM hours of the 15th?

Agreed.

My order from early on the 15th was canceled, and was basically told too bad.

SCREW APPLE AND ATT!

I tried this out and it was actually fun and somewhat informative. The rep told me about moving your image around or dialing directly from contacts to Facetime will result in a purely VoIP call. Cool.

I actually used it, because I was having trouble getting a FaceTime connection. I think it was related to having restored a backup from my 3GS. Here's what fixed it.

1. Turn off FaceTime
2. Turn on Airplane Mode
3. Reboot Phone
4. Turn off Airplane Mode
5. Turn on FaceTime

Voila! There I was, looking at some Mac dude with a fancy blue curtain in the background.

Note: There was zero hold time, and I was notified by an automated voice that I was prohibited from recording the call.

Thanks for posting that. Not sure if it was because I restored my iPhone 4 from my 3G or because of a router issue (or both), but now my girlfriend can annoy me... ahem... talk to me with FaceTime.

where is the ichat update???

Is anyone else a little miffed that they didn't immediately have an ichat update that supported the phone and a way to use your chat list on the phone. I don't care that it is "new" standard. I would have thought that this would just work like so much of the other apple stuff. Seems like they missed a real opportunity with this.

This is empty musing, but I wonder if Apple will support audio only "Facetime". In my one use, it seems that it has the potential to be an elegant VoIP solution without needing 3rd party software.

wow

I know where this is going a lot of sexual activity and iblacklists. SOOoo many pervs in the world, go out and find yourself a damn GF or just stop being pervs in public it's getting Cliché and annoying as hell.

It's good to hear that you are diverting your hard earned money for buying a device you clearly don't need, while some people are starving and trying to figure out basic issues like... finding food.

i wouldn't worry too much... people eat anything these days ;)

Are you kidding?? Facetime Roulette?? Try that and Apple will go to your house, smash down the door, take your iPhone along with all your electronics gear, and sue you until your living homeless on the streets!!

Don't forget, Apple will take your business cards too! ;)

Pathetic

"Hey, thanks for buying our new phone with it's great new Facetime feature. We understand that it only works with other iPhone 4s and that it may be a while before anyone you know has it so if you want, give us a call, we'll be your buddy!"

Love my new phone though and glad I have a friend I can watch getting drunk without having to go to his house and deal with his wife!

Electrical tape (or a finger) over the camera lens. Done!

*he-hem*

 (you'd still be using a lot of bandwidth sending black frames of video)

If facetime doesn't use minutes, and is over wifi, can we do international calls for free?

Well...internet video chat is internet video chat, whether or not you're using a mobile device to do it. It's the same, conceptually, as if you were doing it on Skype from your laptop.

been to Apple Store and rang one of the display units, it was amazing, super crisp and really cool, I know it is the same as iChat but it is still cool.

I'm surprised AT&T didn't block this with all their might since they make their money from suckers paying for calls. Personally, I think it's about time for a paradigm shift. Talk, text and data should not cost separate prices. It's all the same stuff. Phone companies are still living in the 90's. It should be all one price. And that data, which is what it really all is whether it's voice, texts or a web page, can't possibly cost these companies the money they charge for them.

So someone needs to make a stand. Let's hope it's Apple and Google.

And don't get me started on the stupidity of contracts and network exclusive phones. Those ideas are so outdated they're practically silent movies.

so if he stops buying those unnecessary device.. those people you are talking about won't starve no more?...

Apple FaceTime test

I can’t believe I did it, called Apple FaceTime. I waited until my wife and kids were gone (they would have died laughing at me) and dialed it up no hold time and the guy was way cool, I have to say it’s very very cool easy to get connected. I think this will be very popular soon and it’s so easy family’s will get a kick out of this as well people that live far apart. Military personnel talking with spouses and kids, it would be really great for them. Yes, I know we have been doing this on our computers but FaceTime is just to easy and gives you the ability to be mobile. It’s way better then I thought, my wife and 2 kids have 3gs’s so now I will definitely be getting 3 more iPhone 4’s!!!
Now I have to tell them I called FaceTime to give them a good laugh……...
