Does this mean Apple will reintroduce the wired mouse, but with USB-C?

No, in sticking with Cook's lack of port strategy it will probably use the old round DIN port so we can quit tossing all those 20 year old mice into the dump. Probably get him another front page picture on some old, no longer relevant, magazine.

If anyone needs keyboard and a mouse on there iPad they are probably better of getting an Macbook.

so you say but it's absolutely not true. The ipad is a much better content consumption device than a macbook. In the current situation, when I travel I need to carry a laptop (not a macbook, which are currently crap) and an ipad. Adding mouse support means that for me and many other people, the alptop will not be needed anymore.

I have an Apple Pencil. It's pretty much useless as a mouse substitute.

I don’t have a pencil but I do use a Wacom pen for photo editing. There’s no reason one couldn’t use a pencil and trackpad in a similar fashion. I don’t use the pen for everything but for certain tasks it’s far more precise.

I’ve been using a Citrix X1 mouse with Jump Desktop on my iPad for a couple of years. It’s allowed me to no longer need to travel with a laptop. I can use the iPad for consumption, processing raw photos in Lightroom (drawing adjustments directly onto a photo with the Pencil) and logging into the office to work on VMs. I love having just the one device now.

I’m all for mouse support and any other options that open up the iPad and iOS even more. Between this mouse rumour and the iOS 13 rumour of being able to import photos from an SD card directly to an app bypassing Photos, I’m a happy guy.

Whether or not this mouse rumour becomes a reality or not, this thread shows that there is definitely an appetite for mouse support with the iPad.

Mouse ... mouse ... mouse ... I read mouse everywhere. Stop thinking like living in the 90s with Windows 98. I never use a mouse on MacBook since many years.

Magic Trackpad support is the only way to go! It even give us 3D Touch on iPad.

Same difference. Lets call it "External pointing device". Both Trackpad's and mice would be a upgrade in terms of precision and get rid of the need to lift your hand to touch the screen. Keep touch as the primary input especially when holding the iPad. However if you go to the trouble to set it down and use a Keyboard give us external pointing device support as well on that table, next to that keyboard.

This will be a game changer in a lot of ways for the iPad pro... like this no longer will be just a tablet device, and people will be able to do actual work on it, it's going to be interesting to see.

It’s also not happening. This is a pretty poor rumor. It’s a shame macrumors even published it. Apple isnt going to do something like this half baked buried in settings.

USB keyboards already work on the iPad too. I did this on a lark, and it works fine.

(This setup needed power though, presumably because this old Mac keyboard includes a USB hub, so there is a USB power bank in the pic.)

Was that an earthquake or did this picture make Steve Jobs turn over in his grave?

SOME of the actions of a mouse are fine with a Pencil. However, when it comes right down to it, a Pencil is better described as a more precise finger than it is a mouse substitute. The functionality is different.

Steve Jobs turned over in his grave when Pencil support was added, cuz he said styli on iPads are stupid.

BTW, keyboard support on iPads was available right at launch, back in 2010. Steve launched that iPad BTW.

Don’t really see the point of this. iPad is intended to be a touch-centric device. The UI relies heavily on that and Apple Pencil (precision wise). Adding mouse support negates the purpose of the touch screen. They’re basically just appealing to the fans of the crappy Windows Hybrids devices.
There's a market for that.

Important for the people who just brazenly ask for things without a clue what the experience would be like to pay attention here.

ACCESSIBILITY FEATURE. Translation: by no means a primary input method, or something that is ever intended to be used by a normal person.

Your iPad is never becoming a Laptop. Never. It is a laptop replacement for people who don't actually need a laptop.

If they release mouse support, as usual it won't be for existing devices anyway.
So... just a new feature to drive people to buy new iPads.

Now add real cut and paste

You mean like multitasking, external USB support, stylus support, picture-in-picture, etc? Yeah, it will never happen.

Possibly. but I think many people would be more productive if they carried a tablet and a laptop, esp designers

Is this for real? Mouse support on a iPad?

iOS 13 might just change the way of the iPad forever!

The iPad has become more expensive, faster, and thinner. There’s no reason it couldn’t replace a MacBook Air, or even a MacBook Pro.

Apple needs to get it done with a revamped iOS. I think tablets are the future. Obviously if you need to do any actually serious compute power you need a actual real desktop regardless. But there should be no reason an iPad Pro can’t do all the stuff our thin throttling laptops cannot do.

Think of the enterprise marked... They will convert all desktops to a dock for your company issued iPhone, and all corporate software will run on Terminal Servers. No more desktops to install and manage :)

To NOT put mouse support on what Apple advertises as their thinnest and almost most powerful "laptop", the new iPad Pro, is just completely stupid. They KNOW how it will change the devices usability so that EVERYONE can use it as a real tool, just like a laptop, yet they stick their head in the sand and don't want to admit it. But a mouse as an aid for the "few" that might need it? HAHAHA!!! EVERYONE will suddenly need it! Are they really that dumb?

People need to realize that the lack of a mouse input is not the real hinderance when it comes to making an iPad a real computer for productivity. The biggest problem is iOS itself. Adding a mouse doesn't make productivity better on the iPad because you can still do the same with touch input. iOS is neutered as an OS to do any real productivity.

I would love a mouse (bluetooth, USB, I don't give a crap) on the iPad, so when I get an after hours call, I can just carry a small messenger bag and an iPad, instead of my damn laptop everywhere.

I ended up fixing the problem by getting a Surface, which is actually a real computer. I love MacOS and iOS, but some of this stuff is getting really tiresome from an actual productivity standpoint.
Even if they add mouse support it doesn't really enhance the workflow at all. Just another way of doing the exact same thing. iOS is more of a hinderance for productivity than a mouse is.

He didn't say otherwise. He said "people", not all people. And, he's 100% correct.

It's not "just another way", it's a better way for doing most things that the tip of a fat finger. A pointer is not a new concept and there is a reason it's been around since the beginning of modern computers.

Mouse input could fix a whole bunch of issues for a lot of people. There are things I could do right now with mouse input that I can't do properly now. And then there are other things I could do right now that I can do with touch but which would be a lot less annoying with mouse input.
