To store those cute catpics you take with your iPhone, Apple is using Microsoft's Azure cloudservices which run on Dell hardware and have a Microsoft core and might run Windows Server (but probably Linux).

I was happy to kick out the last Dell and Windows out of our office years ago. Oh the irony.

Disclaimer: above info might not be technical correct. I have no experience whatsoever with Azure.

I bet you 3 cute cat pics Microsoft's servers are running Linux.

How up to date is that info, by the way? I would have thought with all their recent investment in their own DCs Apple weren't using somebody else's anymore.

I can't comment on Google staff computer preferences, but Microsoft data centers are all about Microsoft products. From the physical servers running hypervisors (http://www.informationweek.com/clou...zure-server-design-open-source/d/d-id/1113617) to storage (Storage Spaces), it's as Microsoft-y as they can build it. But that's Microsoft's core business. Apple doesn't make data center systems, so I don't think it's fair to compare them.
Even when Apple sold its beloved X-Serves, they weren't built or priced for scale.
They're different businesses. If not for fierce competition on the end-user stuff (computers, phones, etc) I expect Apple would long ago have found a partner to handle the backend stuff so Apple could focus better on its money makers.

Funny, I'm sure I read somewhere they use Linux. If they use Windows I feel sorry for their admin guys, I hate having anything to do with Windows servers :p

Any proof on the Microsoft/Linux thing?

better is good. They must improve the cloud speed anyway... What is more people flocking to Apple, and all the new cloud features will get everyone excited as a wabbit.

I second that interest! A quick check in my Little Snitch rules didn't learn me anything more as the Photo app allowed 'Any connection'. I've removed that rule and will monitor the result.

I start to feel like a parrot. I pay for a premium smartphone, I pay double premium for the memory in it, I pay for a third time to use the cloud services. Then that last part - let's face it - still doesn't (always) work as desired.

I do love my Apple products and I will defend that they're superior to anything else on the market. But something is not right.

I get you. Memory is good, although, not always required if iCloud service is paid for and used efficiently. But yes - the syncing and speed of it could be improved. I'm looking forward to that, and the Apple Music 'all music in the iCloud' service. Faster = better. Then hopefully we won't need the memory anymore.

I spend more time on airplanes than on my wife. The inflight entertainment s**** which is compared to the latter, a bad thing. In general I'm rather against silicon, however in case of my music and movies needs I do need it.

On top of that international roaming is so expensive I'd have to choose between listening to 1 song via the cloud, or having dinner that night.

I see your point. IR is pretty pricey. I'm all for the memory too. Tbh, Australian internet speeds can't handle ****, especially now Netflix is here. Streaming video is difficult enough, I'm just hoping audio isn't as taxing.

I was able to steam using crappy DSL in Upstate New York so that claim doesn't hold water anymore!

Stream to everyone no matter what device they have, or deliberately be awkward and difficult as only apple know how and stream to safari browser?
