Apple is NOT consistent at all....let's see... 3.5" used to be the perfect size and form factor for a smartphone to be comfortable and nice to use single-handed, then when the iPhone 5 came along, 4" is now the perfect "thumb" smartphone out there and 3.5" was well maybe a little too small.
The iPad used to be perfect sized at 9.7" and all competitor devices of smaller size would be DOA (Steve Jobs?), then the Google Nexus 7 came along, sold like hot pancakes and then and few months later....voilá...smaller is beautiful and the iPad Mini was now Apple's Benjamin at 7.9"...

Meanwhile 5" 1080p screen sized smartphones will be the new norm in 2013 and will Apple stay faithful by it's (new) 4" form factor wonder maintining a slight legacy consistency, or risk to launch a bigger sized iPhone that would certainly sell by the millions but would contradict pretty much everything Apple said so far? Tough decision...

Agreed, Apple is not consistent. However, they were selling, selling, selling their device. That's what they're supposed to do (even if it may be hyperbole). I don't think Samsung, or Google, or anyone else are doing any different; it's just business.

I hope they continue to be "inconsistent". That way, I can get what I want: a 4.8+ iPhone. Imitation, copying, "non-innovation" be damned.

It will not be the first time Apple non-directly retracts itself from an idea, path, statement, philosophy.

And the ads will dissapear quietly... and be sure, 100% sure, than in the real world nobody actually thought that the 5 was the "perfect size" just because of that ad that could have been done with so many sizes in the same way. Not everybody drinks the kool-aid.

Well, it is the perfect size. It's the reason I left Android, and many did, actually.

If Apple makes a 4.8" phone, then I think it's time to dump all stock and abandon the iPhone.

WTF? Why would it be named "math". This is definitely not a real name.

Maybe it's a phone that doubles as a TI-84 calculator.

I'm half way serious. The real problem is that teachers and school makes kids buy these relics from the 1990's because they don't trust the kids not to cheat if they let them use an iPhone durring a test.

Perhaps this is a phone that WILL be allowed because it canbe locked down into "test mode" with just the calculator app running.

I'm not betting on this but I'd like to see it

Apple is in a less than ideal space without what appears to be a clear decisive path going forward. Exacerbated by their hate for Google.

Recently I came across this which I feel is appropriate:

Tilde and Ember.js co-founder Tom Dale argues that Apple's biggest problem is that "Google is getting better at design faster than Apple is getting better at web services."

Personally I think Apple would fare better with it's more die-hard customers if they just shot from the hip sometimes.

IE - instead of saying how magical a 3.5" device is (or 4" now) because how perfectly sculpted to the hand is and it's perfect size. Just be honest. It's about apps and how their thousands upon thousands of apps (and developers) would need an overhaul. And that while it's something they *might* do in the future - at this time they prefer to keep the integrity of their app store in tact.

I know I'd have more respect for that vs the BS line of how my fingers can or can't access a 4.6" screen...

At 5" they would start to lose the retina and would need to add a new resolution, fragmenting it more. Apple needs to stop expanding into every know consumer market for mobile devices and work more on improving the current market. NO MORE OPTIONS!

They need to focus on having the products that are the most advanced, the most simple and work the best. Don't play screen size games, spec games, etc. I think that I'd rather see Apple be difficult and refuse to play catch up with Google because Apple would be far better as a niche brand again.

Agree...it'd be disastrous marketing policy for Apple to increase iPhone's screen size so soon, unless they roll out a new iPhone model in a slight different category, like Samsung did when it invented the phablet category with the Galaxy Note 1.

Or it could be disastrous if they didn't. There's a mood building and swelling and not in Apples favour either, it saddens me to say.

Apple could quite easily become the next 'Sony'. I sincerely hope not.

Despite me being quite over my IP5 smaller screen, I have no intention of jumping ship to Android (too locked into the ecosystem), but I know personally quite a few who have and are planning to.

It's called the iPhone Math because it will be stretched to 4.8" and double as ruler. Will even come offer a smart cover with inch/centimeter marks on it. <ducking and running> :D

Maybe this probably has been covered on the previous 23 pages, but wasn't there an issue that increasing the screen size would lead to issues with apps or will we be presented a dual phone app store?

Size matters. Samsung sells because they are not afraid to go big
Bigger is better for a phone.
Smaller is better for a tablet.
The iPad mini is outselling the big iPad.
Size is important. You can still hold a 4.8" iPhone with one hand.
They will sell 5 million the first day.
I can't wait!

Yeah you can hold it in one hand, but can you use it without continuously shifting your grip? The reason Android can work on larger screens is because the back button is a soft key on the bottom of the screen. On iOS every navigation view has the back button in the upper left, which means for right handed people you will have to reach to hit one of the most commonly used controls in the OS.

I can see the presentation of the iPhone 5 Ma(x)(th)...

"And you know the great thing about this phone is .. you can now operate with TWO fingers at the same time".

This phone isn't coming in 2013. End of story.
