4.5 or 4.8 whatever ... I'll ETF for that as long as it's not just a taller device haha!!!

Agree...it'd be disastrous marketing policy for Apple to increase iPhone's screen size so soon, unless they roll out a new iPhone model in a slight different category, like Samsung did when it invented the phablet category with the Galaxy Note 1.

I don't know any apple fan boys who wouldn't buy a new iPhone because they release a model with a bigger screen.

If they wan't a smaller screen they'll buy the smaller phone they aren't going to complain about the fact that apple made an add talking about how small is better. They won't even remember the add.

But people like me who want a bigger phone aren't going to buy an iPhone until they figure out that screen realistate matters to some people.

If apple releases a 4.8" screen phone my next phone will be an iPhone, if they don't release something in that range it'll be another android.

They aren't going to lose any sales for making that size option available, but they will pick up quite a few.

I'd say taking this rumor as truth is as ridiculous as guaranteeing it's completely false....

Apple can/will do whatever they want - and whatever they do this year will have been planned for a least two.

Thanks for your unnecessary snark.

Apple is NOT consistent at all....let's see... 3.5" used to be the perfect size and form factor for a smartphone to be comfortable and nice to use single-handed, then when the iPhone 5 came along, 4" is now the perfect "thumb" smartphone out there and 3.5" was well maybe a little too small.
The iPad used to be perfect sized at 9.7" and all competitor devices of smaller size would be DOA (Steve Jobs?), then the Google Nexus 7 came along, sold like hot pancakes and then and few months later....voilá...smaller is beautiful and the iPad Mini was now Apple's Benjamin at 7.9"...

Meanwhile 5" 1080p screen sized smartphones will be the new norm in 2013 and will Apple stay faithful by it's (new) 4" form factor wonder maintining a slight legacy consistency, or risk to launch a bigger sized iPhone that would certainly sell by the millions but would contradict pretty much everything Apple said so far? Tough decision...

Another Unicorn. Whole heard of them this time. Seems its that time of year again when people start throwing a bunch of crap speculations at the wall and see what sticks.

Another cycle in the great tech circle of life. Another rumor about a potential Apple product that goes against the established grain, and yet more people coming out talking about how dumb an idea it is, and how it would never happen because :insert something an Apple CEO said last year:.

You know, some of you people just aren't any fun. For every three people talking about the pros and cons of a rumor, you've got one guy who comes in, throws out the rollseye emote, and talks about how stupid we all are for believing this so called "crap". Nevermind the fact that if it does happen (and this is more likely than most), they'll be slathering it with praise the moment it's shown off at an Apple keynote.

The world could do with a lot less pointlessly cynical people.

As someone who is 6'2" with proportionally sized hands... a 4.8" screen is simply too big to easily use. I have an iPhone 5 and already have to stretch my hand to reach the status bar when checking notification center. It would be foolish to expand it to that size without making changes to the way the UI is laid out.

I wish there were choices: 3.5" iPhone mini, 4" iPhone 5s and 5" iPhone Max.
People want more choices. U might not want a big screen, but some of us do.

Exactly. Either Apple will address customers' desires for bigger screen phones, or someone else will (and has).

This worries me since Apple isn't exactly known for giving us a lot of choices. If they just add a larger screen size then I don't care, but the 4" is already pushing it for size, if they start only making 4.8" screens then I'm done with iPhones...

It would be disastrous for them not to release a phablet iPhone/iPad if they want to compete out side of north america where the large screen android tablets are destroying apples market share left right and center.

I don't care what anyone says.

I don't care what Apple calls it.

I don't care that it'd be a "me-too" product.

I don't care if it's not "innovative".

I don't care if they add more "features".

I don't care if I couldn't use it with one hand (I rarely do on my 4s anyway, that's what I use Siri for)

I don't even care if it came with iOS 7.

If Apple released a 4.8 iPhone, I'd buy it immediately. Why?

Reliability, security (comparatively speaking), smooooth operation, perfect integration with my existing ecosystem, zero learning curve, and best of all...

...a HUGE screen: the ONLY feature I envy out of Android handsets.

I think there is room in Apple's product lineup for three "current" iPhones:

mini (4-4s), midi (5-5s), maxi (4.8+ rumor)

Given that iOS is their cash cow, it'd make sense to keep all three; not have one replace the other.

I wish they'd apply the same philosophy to the iPad and MBPs:

iPad mini, iPad, iPad Maxi (13")-laptop replacement ;)
13"MBP, 15"MBP, 17"MBP (bring it back!!!)

I know this'll probably never happen, but if it did, I'd be getting all the "maxi"s. Here's why:

The iPhone "maxi" would obviate the iPad mini for me; I'd use it when the iPad "maxi" would be too much to bring.
The iPad "maxi" would be my travel companion: lighter than an Air but smaller than my powerhouse..
The 17"MBP (retina). Serious desktop replacement for work & play that I can take off-site if necessary.

Aahh, dreams.:)

The beautiful thing with other makers (like Samsung) is that you always have the chance to pick whatever screen size fits you better - not with Apple (so far) unfortunately.
There's no reason for people to be buying be the millions Galaxy S3's and not iPhones, unless it's for the screen size. It's not for the price or brand coolness/loyalty for sure...

Put one hair on a bald head, and it's still bald. Put two on a head, and it's still bald. At some point though, and we can't say exactly where, suddenly, the head isn't bald anymore. So maybe 4.5 wasn't unique and new, but 4.8 was the magic je ne sais quoi?

+1 for the funniest analogy I've read so far on MacRumors :) But I hope my laughing at this isn't bad karma (ie...onset of balding!)

Everyone, stop saying you can fit a 4.8" phone comfortably in one hand and have full usability. Unless you have massive, deformed giant hands, you're lying and trying to push your Android agenda.

Reason this won't happen? Fragmentation. Period. End of discussion. The Mini was different because iPad apps can downscale, same aspect ratio. A 4.8" iPhone would not scale correctly unless they kept the 5's ratio, and I doubt that.

I would hazard a guess that it's probably translated from some internal headline/marketing thing that goes something like...

What's an iPhone 5+ .8" = or something like that.

Why would it be disastrous for Apple?

Considering everyone in tech media says it's disastrous for them to have the current size screen, etc.

Apple does nothing..disastrous. Apple does something..disastrous.

This rumor is nonsense. If and when Apple increases the iPhone screen size it for sure will not happen in 2013. They just released a commercial last fall focusing on the importance of touching every corner of the screen with your thumb. Plus, they will most likely stick with the redesign pattern every two years. We will get the 5S this fall and the iPhone 6 will look different in 2014.

I really can't believe that some people are taking such a rumor to heart. On a related note, I'd love to see a larger iPhone screen, and it may happen one day, but definitely not this year.

It will not be the first time Apple non-directly retracts itself from an idea, path, statement, philosophy.

And the ads will dissapear quietly... and be sure, 100% sure, than in the real world nobody actually thought that the 5 was the "perfect size" just because of that ad that could have been done with so many sizes in the same way. Not everybody drinks the kool-aid.

I got rid of my Iphone 5 due to the small size screen. Got a Note 2 (5.5"), which I hate every day due to different flaws on the OS.

Would I go back to an Iphone today? No way. The big screen and the swype keyboard DO make my life easier.

Also know lots of people who ditched their Iphones for Androids for the same reasons. I'm pretty sure they would come back if Apple would offer another option with a bigger screen.

My Note 2 has a rubber/silicon cover and I have no problems fitting it in my back pocket or in a jacket. Also don't have any problems if eventually I need to use a 2nd hand to touch the screen on the opposite top corner.

I thought iPhone+ but then knowing their latest naming it will probably be...

The Newer New iPhone+2.0 Pro
Your Personal Mobile Home Theater. Small enough for your pocket, it just works and it's just that easy.
