2 years later and we are all still excited to see what applications lidar will bring.
Lidar was never going to be serious until it was on the entry level device. Without Apple stepping up and standing behind the tech the risk reward for embracing the tech is to great.

Great, more useless, expensive, battery-sucking stuff packed into "normal" phones. If anything, they need to make pro and normal models further away, not getting them closer. No, don't point me to SE2, I want a regularly updated phone for everyday use, let's create a separate pond to play in for tech enthusiasts and Apple's ego.

So Pro means telephoto and stainless steel ?
And hopefully, ProMotion display.
To me, it would be a good reason to pay the premium price for the Pro model. It is not as big of a difference like having OLED vs LCD (Xr vs Xs and 11 vs 11 Pro) but still nice to have, more than the telephoto lens in my opinion.

I just get the feeling this is going to go the way of force touch. How many people actually use it with any regularity? Sure measure the height of people you know to amuse yourself briefly... but why and how often does anyone really need to do stuff like this?

It helps with portrait photos, but all the reviews show it doesn’t make that much of a difference and it could probably be replicated in software. So why increase the BOM? <- notice the similarity to force touch?

AR on a phone doesn’t make sense and will never take off in a big way because people aren’t going to view the world by holding up a slab. It’s been around for three years and got nowhere. BUT put it on a pair of glasses and now you’re talking about real possibilities.

Clearly Apple has substantial plans for this sensor. They're not crazy enough to install these on millions of devices for the purposes of helping us measure people's height. Same goes for the U1 chip. I expect software features to roll out over the next couple of years that tap into these two things in useful ways.

Lol. By the way I just remembered Lidar improves portrait photos. I think we'll really see Lidar use ramp up this upcoming year when they launch their AR headset.

Although query whether that involves the lidar scanners in the phone. Unless this year’s “headset” is a headset you slide a phone into (yuck).

Agreed. Just weird to release these hardware features with no substantial software uses yet. Not even a built in “toy“ 3D scanning app, etc. I mean, for a year or 2 all you could do with U1 was have a little arrow point in the direction of who you are airdropping to?

Who cares... Cook, give me back Touch ID... :/
I am now using a Samsung Note 20 Ultra after many years of iPhones, and I have to say, the fingerprint sensor under the display has come in big so many times. Lots of times I have the phone laying on the charger and don't want to pick it up just to unlock it, I just put my finger to the sensor and it's ready to go.

Fine, but far less useful than an equally capable camera system on all models regardless of size. That’d be nice, as would a slightly beefier battery.

I highly doubt this for two reasons.
#1: it’s DigiTimes. That’s basically the mark of failure when it comes to Apple rumors.
#2: The rumors from back in August or September suggested that the 2021 iPhones would also all get the triple camera set up. That plus this basically means that the only thing that would separate the “pro” iPhones is 120Hz, and I highly doubt that’s the case.
apples not gonna charge you an extra $300 just for 120hz and stainless steel. So no, I don’t think that all four iPhones are going to become this identical next year

LOL, they sure will charge you the $300.

When you're flattered that your date wants to take your photo but she's actually checking to see how tall you really are.

To be fair, the Pro models also have base 128gb storage, 6gb RAM, and ProRaw. Id say the matte glass back is also a premium feature. All these features are reasonably worth the extra money over the regular iphones.

My grandpa cant wait lol 😂 99,9999% didnt even use it once ..if this isnt gimmick i dont know what
Actually it's used every time you take a photo to make autofocus even faster, especially in low light such as indoors, as well as making portrait mode even more accurate for edge definition so the background blur looks better on the edges. It's also really handy for accurately measuring things in real life, but yeah, not as many people know about that.
