Once you get used to a large, HiDPI monitor, there's just no going back.
Yep! My employer gave me a 4K 27" display to hook up with my 15" MBP. When I set it up I first thought the display was broken. But no the blurriness is just what 4K on 27" look like. So I gave it back after two month of trying to get used to it. I rather work on my 15" only.
The 24” is the former 21.5”
Same Mark G said it already
And that means what for the 27" iMac?
Mark G “I believe that a larger, redesigned iMac to replace the Intel 27-inch models is en route. Apple increasing the screen size of the smaller model from 21.5 inches to 24 inches seems to indicate that the 27-inch model could see a size increase as well. I don't think, however, that Apple will launch the larger model with the same M1 chip that's in the smaller model.
"Seems to indicate". He is just guessing. This 27" screen leak today is the first real leak concerning the screen size of the bigger iMac. Before there where only guesses.
This brings joy to my heart! Very much looking forward to the new larger iMac's and Q122 is rapidly approaching. Maybe with M2 MAX chips to go along. 🤪
If they really release the bigger iMac in Q1 2022 they will put the exactly same chips in it as they put in the MacBook Pros two days ago. I'm pretty shure the M2 cycle will start with a plain M2 with the redesigned MacBook Air in mid/late 2022.
I guess this 27inch iMac might be M1 Pro/Max version of iMac. A high end iMac is rumored to share with Mac Pro Cube's chip.
That would be interesting, and strange. Because I also think that the M1 Max is not enough for a real top of the line iMac. But at the moment there is nothing else. Maybe they release the iMac in Q1 2022 with M1 Pro and Max just to top it up with an even better version later in the year together with the Mac Pro. But depending on the prices I would be not amused if I get a maxed out iMac in march just to lern six months later that there is a better version that would have suited more. 🙃
But, would a "desktop version" of the M1 Pro of Max be higher spec'ed than the mobile version?
If they indeed release them in Q1 I'm sure they will use exactly the same chips as they put in the MacBook Pros.

Lol.

Of course not. Not the same constraints as in a laptop.

Could have a small bump above to fit in a high spec webcam.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Apple's goal has been, all along, to get as close to an edge-to-edge display with all their products.

Apple is planning to introduce a new 27-inch iMac in early 2022, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young. This information comes from both Young's tweets and additional details that he shared with MacRumors.

m1-imac-front.jpg

Young told MacRumors that the 27-inch display for the iMac will feature mini-LED backlighting, which likely means that it will have XDR branding. Young tweeted that Apple is currently planning to release the new iMac in the first quarter of 2022.

Young added that the 27-inch iMac display will feature ProMotion, allowing for an adaptive refresh rate between 24Hz and 120Hz. At the time this story was published, Young did not say what the display's resolution would be, but the current 27-inch iMac has 5K resolution.

Apple has introduced a few other products with mini-LED displays, including the 12.9-inch iPad Pro earlier this year and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro this week. Young expects Apple's recent leadership with mini-LEDs to continue with the new iMac.

While he made an initial misstep with this rumor in stating it was for a standalone display rather than an iMac, Young has proven to be very accurate with display-related rumors, having accurately forecasted that the new iPad mini would feature an 8.3-inch display and that the new MacBook Pro models would feature ProMotion. Young has 25 years of experience in the display industry and seems to be well connected with sources within the supply chain.

Update 9:45 p.m.: This article has been rewritten to reflect a correction issued by Young. While he initially stated the 27-inch mini-LED display was for an external monitor, he is now saying it is destined for an updated iMac. A monitor could come later.

Could this be the apple silicon iMac pro with the M1 Pro & Max chips?

...Who knows, maybe they will release a redesigned AirPort/AirPort Express as well?
I had terrible luck with Airport/Airport Extreme devices over the years. I owned several, and all crapped-out on me after a few years. That being said, I LOVED how easy they were to set up, and the seamless TimeMachine integration.

When Apple released both the Apple TV, and later the Home Pod, I wondered why they didn't just build-in the Airport Extreme into the base of each. In my mind, it would have been the perfect fit. Of course, now they've discontinued the Home Pod, and there simply isn't enough room in the Home Pod Mini to do it. But the idea of only having to plug in one device for both Apple TV and a Wifi router is quite appealing.

It’ll probably be $2K. I wish someone would make a 27” 5K display for $500. I don’t understand why it can’t be done. 8 or so years ago there were cheap 27” 1440p displays. By now you’d think 5K versions would cost the same as them.
I got a widescreen 29’ LG for 275$. It supports HDR, looks “ok” and it even comes with a very good speaker. No way you can compare it to the Apple XDR one tho.

The initial rumour was that the new "big" iMac would have a 30 inches screen. Why is everyone suddenly so excited about 32 inch? They went from 21.5 to 24 on the smaller one, it' a bit weird that they would remain at 27 inch on the smaller one but again, the cost of a 30 inch 5.5k or even 32 inch 6K mini-led screen would be astronomical. A 27 inch 5k mini-led with 120 hz, will be just fine. Hopefully, it'll come with M2 chips.

Side question, why not reach under it?
Except it’s now going to be an inch or two closer to the desk but, ok, I’ll just use the height adjustment to move it up a bit and... oh, wait...

Plus, you still have to look around it to see what you’re doing.

M1 Max is sufficient for 99% of the potential customer base. Overkill even, in most cases. Those who need more can buy the Mac Pro when it gets released.
True! But the iMac at the moment has the possibility to spec it with 128 GB of RAM. The M1 Max can only handle 64 GB. It would feel like a step back in this regard. And it's hard to believe they take a step back with anything while transitioning a machine from Intel so Apple Silicon.

It's likely less than 1 out of every 10000 iMacs is spec'd with 128 GB RAM. It's basically a complete non-issue in the greater scheme of things.

I find it curious that it keeps the 27" and does not go up to 32". Will there be a 32" iMac Pro with an even more advanced screen?

Will they keep the 27" to try not to raise the price too much as it is miniLED?

In Europe, the new macbook pro 14" and 16" have gone up 120 euros and 50 euros respectively. Maybe putting a 32" miniLED 120hz screen is a very high cost for an iMac "not Pro" but bigger than the iMac 24".

Perhaps a 32" iMac Pro with the Mac Pro processor and a much higher price, like the previous model.
27” is perfect for double-pixeling 5K to 1440p. You do this on 32”, and the font will get too large while clarity of fonts will degrade. You have to go 6K on 32”.

Yeah, you're probably right. 🙂 I think I just would love to see a really capable iMac even though it would be completely too much for me and I probably wouldn't buy it. 🙃

Give us the MiniLED 120hz with Face ID external display.

I'll buy it on day 1.

Why do you want face id rather than touch id? Im just curious as to the thought process. Face ID will still require you acknowledge somehow otherwise you are just automatically authorizing anything by just sitting there. Might as well touch a button on the keyboard, which in that case... why not just touch id.

hopefully... and I would like to see them to offer the 24" and the mac mini with the same processor options like they did the macbook pros.
I doubt that. The Mac mini yes, but not the iMac 24". This thing is a consumer device. The equivalent of the MacBook Air, just as a desktop.

My prediction FWIW is that this iMac will not have a notch and the screen will be less rounded at the corners, if at all. Then again what do I know about that they'll do? Precisely zero. I do know one thing, however. The iMac isn't under the same constraints as a laptop would be in terms of device size. I guess if it does have a notch it will because they wanted the display to hug the corners of the screen for design consistency with MBP. We'll see where they priorities like when it comes to a Pro iMac stationary desktop device. I'd love them to brick wired keyboard and make it into some sort of professional port hub, for when quickly copying stuff. To save the ol' reach around. But yes, the computer should also have a a great selection of ports to exceed even the MBP, including at least one USB-A port.

I don't mind 27" at all. In fact I'd personally be happy with an updated 24" - I just want 4 TB ports and 10GBe.

It is almost a certainty that new iMacs coming in first quarter of 2022 will be M1 Pro and Max variant - maybe even slightly tweaked variants for a desktop machine rather then a notebook. I cant see them releasing a M2 so soon after the Pro and Max have debuted.......

I don't mind it, either option is nice! :)
