First they came for the iPhone but I didn’t have that model so I didn’t speak up.
Then they came for the iPad Pro but I didn’t have that one so I kept quite.
Then they came for the MacBook and I didn’t have that so I thought **** it.
Then they came for something I had and I cried and cried and cried till my eyes dried up.

It’s not like the iPad internal needs to save space and it doesn’t need and probably won’t be waterproof, so what’s the point of removing the headphone jack?!? Not that I use it, but my kids does and a lot of kids do. Forcing people to buy Bluetooth headphone or lighting headphones for no good reason is just stupid. But apple seem to enjoy making stupid decisions these days

I find it very hard, impossible even, to believe they'd release it with vertical only Face ID support. I call bs.
One possibility might be the feature being added in a subsequent software update, implying it may not be available on launch. It’s not exactly the first time Apple has shipped products with missing features, but none that were so mission critical. It would be like the 5s shipping with Touch ID disabled, with Apple promising to enable it in a future update.

Guess we will just have to wait and see.

The headphone jack was removed from the iPhone X to allow for the OLED screen to bend, enabling the bezelless display. Apple might deem it acceptable collateral damage in exchange for being able to do the same to the iPad.

Bt overall, I still find this rumour fishy.

With the iPhone they didn’t have the internal space to include it, which I guess makes sense, but you really can’t make the same argument with the iPad. I hope they at least start bundling lightning earpods with the iPads now...

The internal space has always been a bad excuse. Similar size phones have managed to fit it in just fine. They really just wanted to sell us Bluetooth headphones and dongle adapters. Removing the jack from the iPad would be a clear signal that they just want to remove it for the sake of it.

These rumors sound like a load of bollocks to me though.

this leads to the conclusion that apple still haven't figured out how to make Face ID work in landscape mode so now they are sacrificing the use of iPad in landscape for Face ID.

lol.. when you put it like that, it does sound funny.. Apple can do it one way, but not the other.

On reporting a rumour MacRumors should apply a large visible badge rating for the source at the top of the article in a flourish like the old 'Ars' emblem. Giving sources with a shaky track record a C or D rating, and better sources an A or B rating. This enables us to consume rumours in an informed way.

Tapping a badge would take us to a page explaining the source badging system, why it exists and the specifics of what to expect for each rating.

I miss Steve. He was smart enough to see that people did not like the idea of them removing the 3.5mm jack from the phones. Tim appears to have the attitude of, "Hey if everyone hated it then we should do that on our products as well" None of this would be going on if Steve was still running Apple.

How can you possibly say that? At the time Steve was alive, removing the audio jack would have been a terrible idea, just like keeping a 3.5” display in the growing age of media consumption would also have been an awful idea and would have killed the iPhone. Would Steve have gone to bigger displays? Who knows.

But just to refresh your memory, Steve didn’t die and then they removed the audio jack immediately. “Mwahaha!”, cackled Tim. “Now that Steve is finally gone, I can now remove the audio jack — the one thing he would never agree on doing!”

It did take SIX damn phones/years later before they did it. That’s a long time.

You can’t with any certainly say what Steve would or wouldn’t have done because technology is an evolution. What is right one day is wrong the next.

Personally I don’t see how it’s such a leap to suggest Steve would have removed the headphone jack for thinness & waterproofing purposes. Honestly it seems like the kinda decision he’d be indifferent about once wireless headphone technology had matured.

No headphone jack? This foolishness is why I went back to android. Tim cook is doing too.much. In other words if you're editing video and/or make beats you're just screwed? Guess I'll be holding onto my iPad pro 12.9 for a while
I admit I don‘t have that use case, but if an ancient analog jack is still used for that in 2018, it‘s about time someone forces a change.

I would have been dissapointed if they didn’t remove the headphone jack. It’s time to move on and go wireless.

The real news here is Face ID not working in horizontal mode. It’s really bad on the iPhone X when you have to rotate it to authenticate but it’s not acceptable on the iPad that is used extensively in landscape mode.

I don’t see why this can’t just be fixed in a software update.
It's a dick move. Not so much removal of the jack but instead of using a common standard they go with that proprietary crap.

Is that ‘proprietary crap’ you’re referring to being the highly successful product known as the AirPods? Hardly, but you’re entitled to your opinion.

Regardless, I don’t believe this rumor at all and I think the 3.5 mm Jack will be here for the iPad for the foreseeable future.

No, the lightning connector. Don't be so presumptuous.

Smaller body? Does that mean we won’t get a larger screen? I was really hoping for same size body and bigger screen like they did with the iPhone
you want an even lerger display then 12.9" ? You want an samsung galaxy tablet 18"

Don't forget to remove from Macs and MacBooks to be consistent.
the 12" Macbook is due for a redesign so...in 2019, it is starting

Headphone jack removal didn’t surprise, but that smart connector near to lightning port is so absurd. Steve Jobs said “If you don’t cannibalize yourself, someone else will.” in 2007, during ipod era. He didn’t say to ditch everything. I think current Apple team completely misunderstand him nowadays.

This would be complete nonsense if Apple neutered the iPad like this. What's a computer? - Well I'm pretty sure it has a headphone jack on it!! I haven't upgraded my iPhone past the 6S solely because the headphone jack is far more useful to me than a bunch of stupid Animoji and camera improvements. I was considering having to go the iPad Pro route once my iPhone gets so long in the tooth that I need to upgrade. But this decision would make me re consider.

I Don't care about headphone jack but please no stupid notch!

Obviously we don’t know, but I don’t think the iPad would require a notch, being that it would have adequate room to incorporate the hardware sensors/camera, but even if it did include the notch, I think would be less noticeable on a larger display versus a 5.8 inch iPhone display in comparison.
