Anyone else feel like a solid $999 MacBook would be perfect? Basically take the 12-inch MacBook and maybe make it 13 inches if you want, but bring the price down to $999.

What are the odds that Apple actually kills off the existing 12” MacBook and replaced it with a 13” MacBook intended to hit the $999 price range?

if they did that and at a cheaper £999 that would be great, i would consider getting a 13" MacBook, depending on what processors and specs it would have.

Can experts enlighten us as to why in 2018 we're not talking about OLED laptops (Macbooks) yet?

OLED is hardly without its own set of issues. It's not a "no brainer" like IPS over TN. Honestly, before Apple took the expensive step of putting OLED panels in MBPs I'd rather them use that money to increase the size of the stock SSD or up GPU performance. Of all criticisms I could give about my 15" rMBP Touch Bar, the screen isn't on the list.

But as this thread is about the entry level laptops OLED really isn't even a discussion point here.

Dropping the MBA would be fine by me, but at least the Macbook 12" has to take over its price slot then.

Matching the Pro 13"s size is kind of weird as they'd be so similar, makes more sense to me to drop the "Pro" moniker from the nontouchbars name and just have it become the 13" macbook.

Apple seems intent on killing a product format that people actually like very much. Keep it, get a few models with retina screens in them, and dump the Mac Book rather than the other way around. But keep the low end versions as well with a spec bump.

They should take the 13” MBP without the TouchBar rename it and cut the price - done.

It would be nice if they keep all the ports from the MBA, but that won’t gonna happen…

PS, never understood the reason of having 12” MB - Small, under powered, no ports & expansive.

Fragmentation, anyone? Apple should just kill the MBA, great as it is, add another port to the MB and drop the price, and be done.

The
Sounds to me like they just want to update the Air because it is still selling well, like they did when they introduced the iPhone SE.

The reason why it is selling well is NOT because of the price as someone said before. It is because the design and usability (2x USB ports, MagSafe, SSD and keyboard) hits the mark. Plus..the design still holds for today.

The MacBook Air came out in 2008 and the 2010 model was a redesigned upgrade-fix (but without the back-lite keyboard). The next models afterwards had the back-lite keyboards back to my delight.

I had a 2008, 2010 and now a 2013 model. Love the design still..and keep the front Apple glow logo please...not a cheap sticker..

If they just upgrade the screen...they would sell a ton...

Great. MagSafe will be officially gone and no more SD card slot.

Also USB C has not exactly taken off just quite yet. Still a TON of legacy devices out there. I hate adapters.

They should just leave it alone especially if it is selling. Instead they will "upgrade" it by removing a bunch of ports and cranking up the price.

Just leave it alone if you can't do it good.

It's slightly confusing that they currently sell a 'MacBook' with a 12" display priced at $1299, yet they are going to introduce a 13" 'MacBook' priced at $999. How will that work...

"Hi, I'd like to get the new 13" MacBook please."
"Sure it's $999, let me get you one from out the back, what colour?"
"Oh, actually I like the slightly smaller one, how much is that?"
"$1299"
"Come again?"
"The 12" is $300 more than the 13""
"How so?"
"I couldn't tell you, I only work here!"

I'm looking forward to this. I don't understand the 11" as the screen is ridiculously small to work on, and the form factor with the silver bezel has always been ugly compared to the rest of the laptops.

Second half of 2018?

I was hoping the MacBooks would update earlier this year: March/April.

There is a deadzone in the early part of the year, and I don't count Apple Watch stuff or the HomePod as proper Apple hardware.

The MacBook is a great design, and if they could swing a $999 entry model, it would be nice. However, I am hoping to see far-faster-heartier models in the near future when Intel gets down to 10nm and we get DDR5 RAM, etc. These current models are nice for casual users, but not beefy enough for intermediate users with larger processor needs, while the MacBook Pros seem quite nice for advanced users.

Size and weight of the MacBooks are great. The keyboard doesn't bother me, and I type a lot. The entire problem is that you need a lot of peripherals to do anything serious on a MacBook... which defeats the use of a MacBook, especially the price.

If they do it right it will be a great laptop for basic users at school and university. Hell I might even consider upgrading my 2011 MacBook Pro.

Agreed. I used to alternate buying a new Mac desktop and then a laptop. Not so now. I'm still using a 2012 Mac mini because Apple has yet to make anything better. And I no longer use a laptop. I'm not particularly happy with using an iPad for my writing, but the added usefulness of Apple's thin, frail-looking, and pricey laptops aren't worth their cost.

What I need is what Apple needs to sell to schools—a sturdy and inexpensive laptop that not stripped down and intended just to look pretty. I need a tool not a toy.

Apple continue to kill off anything resembling decent in the Mac range. All Apple needed to do was release a revised MacBook Air with a Retina display.

Who would of thought Apple would have discontinued the innovation of the 11" MacBook Air so soon with the 13" model now to follow.

It is about what the consumer wants and NOT what Apple sees fit the consumer should have. Instead we will end up with yet another USB-C case of herpes that requires docking stations.

There is considerable demand for the machines pre USB-C and Touchbar.

The evidence is clear if you visit eBay and see the commanding prices older Retina MacBook Pros are fetching.

Many consumers do not want a case pseudo modern Mac herpes yet Apple couldn't give a damn for the consumer.

Apple without Steve Jobs at the helm is heading for disaster and I have been using Macs for 16 years.

I wonder if they'll axe the 12" instead?

Some people like how thin it is, and don't do much beyond e-mail and the occasional internet surfing. It's not for me, but I guess it is for some people.

Yeah I think it’s first full year was 2009.i was envious of the lighter size but couldn’t deal with small 64 gb drive and battery. People were miserable using it.

Edit sorry it wasn’t the battery so much as slow speed and lack of ports so that if something was plugged in, perhaps forced to use the battery? I just remember agony of user who was trialing for his co and now stuck with machine for several years. I was sitting fine with my Mac alum late 2008. Apple-can be agony if under spec’ed. I regret a little still that my pro 2016 only has 256 go of space, although a lot more workable with smaller faster externals and tiny usb sticks.
Yeah I was about to say. I had to charge that thing once a week. Battery was amazing.
