I see them introducing the new phone and maybe watch because they are a pair. An iPad, not likely. Too many divides for consumers to split there limited resources on. If it is there, it's a refresh a 1.5 iPad Air if you will. IPad sales are slumping and it;s a way to prop up those numbers till a full refresh arrives.

iPad sales may slump... But they still get 30% from Apps! So "slow and steady" is worth a lot more if people keep making great apps. I've bought several apps just this month for my "old" iPad 2... So Apple is STILL making money off me. And that's their business.. Making money.

Funny how after the massive success of the iPhone 5S the Apple-haters "flip flopped™" from "tacky" to "nice" once "coincidentally" most other flagship phones offered "gold" as basic colour option as well*.

No, I'm pretty sure that a golden phone is the tackiest thing. Ever.

This seems to be the time of the year when all the crazies come out. .

Yes and every year I work real hard not to come into the news forums and I'm failing. Must.......resist......must......exit.....n o w.

I know this may be a first world problem but can they make the lowest brightness setting lower? In bed, the screen is still too bright and I feel that they should give me the option to lower it even more. :D

Yes, please! And if that's not possible because the backlight is already at a minimum brightness, please extend it via software by just putting a varying opacity of black over everything.

Bright lights affect melatonin production which results in making it harder to get to sleep...

I wonder if this is the reason there has been so many deals on the iPad lately?

Been looking at getting one as I thought it would be November before the new ones come out.

I would trade all of that for 2 GB of RAM and longer lasting battery. Don't care about it being thinner. The Air is pretty thin enough. I would rather Apple put in a higher capacity battery in all those spaces saved from having the full-laminated panel.

But no upgrade RAM is a deal killer for me. No 2 GB of RAM...No Upgrade!

Someone that agrees with me! Either fix it or buy the company behind FLUX PLEASEEEE

Not really, far from champion.it's almost un-usable or maybe you haven't seen any newer iPad in action yet.the original lags like there is no tomorrow, not to mention weight and bulk.lol

I will replace my Air with a new Retina Mini immediately.

Well, mine is still a great capable device: iWork + Procreate + iDraw + Instashare get the job done. Not to mention I can still browse, watch videos and read books. I don't see the need of upgrading yet.

Also, I do a full restore every year.

I suppose one main iOS device event would make a lot of sense. It would seem to be quite a break from tradition however.

I really need a new iOS device now. My iPT 4g is dying a slow death, with a jammed home button now. Need new iPad! NAOOOOWWWW!!!!!

It took them this long to realize that a reflective display is distracting?
I'm still waiting for TV manufacturers to figure out that a shiny black bezel is also not a good idea

There is pro and cons. The pro of glass displays is their unmatched clarity, stability and cleanability.

If it will have an Anti-Reflective Laminated Display it will likely still be a clear glass display, some kind of blend. It won't ever be a matte display.

iPad mini retina in gold please. I have no plans to upgrade my air but I will most likely pick up a mini retina.

An anti glare screen and more RAM is all thats needed. Battery life is great and I have no use for a fingerprint scanner on a device of its size.

Well I'm not bothered about RAM, but the battery life on the iPad Air is pretty good already. I get between 14-15 hours on a single charge and standby time is excellent.

In a bit of a surprise prediction, Apple may use its upcoming September 9 event to introduce the iPad Air 2 along with the iPhone 6 and iWatch, claims KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a research report released today.
That plan would differ from Apple's announcement schedules in recent years that have seen the company unveil the iPhone in September and the iPad in October at a second press event.

Ming-Chi Kuo's success rate is pretty good. However, I'd be shocked if they announced both at the same event. Apple tends to want the iPad to have its own spotlight. With the watch and the iPhone each commanding their own attention; I'd imagine it'd be a bit too crowded to ALSO do a major iPad announcement such as the one being predicted here.

According to Kuo, Apple is preparing modest upgrades primarily for the iPad Air and not the iPad mini, because the larger iPad is more popular among consumers. While the iPad Air 2 is said to carry several improvements, including an anti-reflective display as previously rumored, the second-generation Retina iPad mini may receive only Touch ID support.

Leaving the iPad mini behind on CPU would be terrible. Having the first generation release with an A5 when the A6 was the newest chip at the time was already detrimental. At least this year, Apple kept the iPad mini in lock-step with the iPhone 5s and the iPad Air. While I'm looking forward to TouchID in a new iPad mini, I'd much rather the newer CPU and I'd MUCH rather not having to pick between those two features. A retina display with the color gamut of the iPad Air and 5thgeniPodtouch/iPhone 5/5c/5s would be nice too, but I won't hold my breath for that one.

Also, I don't know where we get the idea that the larger iPad is more popular with consumers. Being cheaper and smaller, I see more iPad minis in the wild than I do full-sized iPads.

Makes sense to me, if they're keeping the models the same, with maybe an "S iteration" speed bump / enhancement (as in 4S, 5S, i.e. better camera, fingerprint sensor, more RAM). Sure, they released brand-new form factors at the last two events ("Air" in 2013, "mini" in 2012). But would (only) releasing a souped up version of the same iPads that we know really warrant a dedicated Media event? I don't think so.

That depends on whether they have any "major" anncouncement to make in the first place.

Looking back, there had been great rumor buildup and the occasional component photo leaks in the months preceding the actual launches of the mini (a smaller iPad?) and Air (A new form factor akin to the mini?). In a similar vain, even the iPhone 5S new golden variety and the Retina display on the mini had been rumored pre-release.

This year, though, has so far been virtually silent on the iPad rumor front.

Which is why I doubt that they have a "big" announcement to make.

iPads are still a new enough product category that they'll make announcements even if they are subtle. Case in point, the fourth generation iPad, which is really no different from the third generation iPad save for the lightening port, newer wireless, and a faster CPU. Not a lot to write home about, yet still it made an appearance in a keynote. As it stands now, the next iPad Air, is rumored to have some flavor of A8, TouchID, a slightly tweaked body design, be even thinner, and potentially have an entirely new glass coating. You're also forgetting that it may be announced alongside the rumored iPad Pro. That alone, would warrant a keynote in and of itself.

This hasn't stopped them from including previous iPads in keynotes when the updates to said iPads were minor. Really, aside from the iPad Air, and the iPad mini a year prior, the last MAJOR iPad announcement was the iPad 2. Still, again, this hasn't stopped them from making big deals about all of the iPad offerings introduced since.

You're missing most of those rumors. Also, MacRumors is doing what it always does around April to September, which is blast with constant iPhone rumors. It's easy to miss the iPad stories because for every iPad story, there are two dozen iPhone stories. But yeah, I'd scroll through it; the tweaked body design rumored to come out this year looks nice. Nothing that makes the current iPad Air look dated by any means, but still swanky in its own right.

They are most probably going to announce in some kind of media event; I have little doubt about that. That wasn’t the point I was trying to make (against).

It merely tagged along the presentation of the mini. New display coating and shaving off a mm on the case is, as you say, nothing to write home about. A faster processor is a given. I can’t quite see why they shouldn’t include it tomorrow. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that they absolutely will do tomorrow. I think it also depends on what they have else they have to show before the holiday season, to align the next iPad with.

That “something else” might be a redesigned MacBook, a higher resolution iMac, the rumored watch accessory, or a new Apple TV, for all I know. But the iPhone 6 presentation seems just as good a bet to me this year (which is why I’d find a release tomorrow by no means hardly “shocking”).

As does the iPad "pro", of course. Though I'd bet money against such a thing this year.

I understand the point you were trying to make. What I'm saying is that the iPad mini was the centerfold announcement at the October 2012 event (despite the thinner iMacs, the Ivy Bridge Mac minis, the introduction of the 13" MacBook Pro with Retina, and the fourth generation iPad). I agree that Apple doesn't need an iPad-only event. However, an iPad Pro along with an iPad Air would be the centerfold announcement as it is a headlining act for them still.

My argument isn't that they won't make a separate iPad event, nor that they need to. (And I guess that's where you and I are in agreement.) My argument is that the iPhone and the iWatch will be big enough on their own that adding in iPads would be too much.

We have new Mac minis and new MacBook Airs, both of which are rumored to be seeing huge redesigns, plus OS X Yosemite. MacBook Pros are on a strict 8-10 month cycle and we just saw a refresh a couple months ago, so that's out. Potentially Haswell E Mac Pros, but I'm skeptical. The last couple years, there's been plenty to stuff into that October event, and the iPads have fit in nicely.

That said, while none of the individual improvements rumored for the iPad Air are worth writing home about, there are already enough of them that would get me excited if I was due for an iPad upgrade (or upgrading from a third generation iPad or older). They are certainly enough for me to be upset about NOT seeing in the next iPad mini if this rumor is correct, that's for sure.

Samsung is pushing competition against Apple, which is awesome. The watch effort is very likely done out of that competition. I think a larger tablet could very easily be out this year. As for whether I think it'll be out this year, I give it 50-50.

Want more storage? This might interest you. A 16GB or 32GB iPad with something like this; way more storage for less money. Creates its own WiFi network, accessible by up to 5 devices, 10 hr battery life, and all the movies, photos or songs you could want.

I have one of those. The unit itself is quite slick, but the viewer/software to support it is not that great.

I just want to be able to dump, like, all four seasons of Game of Thrones to my iPad without having to worry about whether or not I have enough space -- even if I don't use all of the space or keep the memory full. 128GB is close. Actually, it probably would be ok if it really were 128, instead of 114GB.

...and please use the same coating as for the Macbook Retina...
