The launch of the new iPhone 12 models that have all-OLED displays, edge-to-edge designs, 5G connectivity, and significant camera improvements, drove an increase in both switchers and upgraders year over year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said during today's earnings call covering the first fiscal quarter of 2021.

Cook said that while those switching over from Android and upgraders both increased, Apple saw the largest number of upgraders that it's ever seen in a quarter. "We're very thrilled about that," said Cook.

Apple today announced that it now has more than 1 billion active iPhones worldwide, up from 900 million in 2019, and 1.65 billion total active devices.

Well, the standard iPhone 12 is a great device for the price. The advertisements were aggressive too and the product is solid. There were tons of carrier promos for the 12 line, in the US, so I'm not surprised people upgraded.

Also, 2020 was a hell of a year. I imagine a lot of people 'treated' themselves to a new phone.

Absolutely amazing. The question is Apple in a position to sustain this type of growth? I'll wager a guess, that Apple was probably surprised by this quarter.

The improved pricing and the SE no doubt helped. And this is what I have said for years. They can still be a great brand and provide great products at a good price whilst also increasing market share.

Imagine the numbers if the notch was gone. ;)

Okay, maybe not a dealbreaker to many here and Apple users, but some and probably potential Android switchers where it matters.
You know what irks me more? Its those asymmetrical bezels on Android phones, even latest Galaxy S21 lineup has it! Cmon, its 2021! Even big G managed to make one with symmetrical bezels in the shape and form of Pixel 5! But it was way too expensive for what it was IMHO.
It might sound silly, but Id rather have notch than thicker lip. Tho must admit that notch on 12 Pro Max to me appeared kind of uglyish despite being the same size as on Mini/6.1.

Android users have finally seen the light and are now using the best platform on the planet. 💡📱
I certainly wouldnt call it the best, there are some basic things that iOS lacks big time, when compared to Android, just small things that should be there and that make daily interactions so much more fluid, yet, iOS have them their own, IMHO, awkward way, less efficient way, while Android has it better.
But, to each their own I suppose.
On iPadOS on the other hand, I dont find such "flaws" given that there are some minor differences between iOS and iPadOS.

I don't think so. Almost all the folks that I know on Android are firmly there no matter what. iPhones are too pricey to replace Android. They can only do it at the very top end.

All the folks I know use iPhone, recently had 3 people I know switch from Samsung phones to iPhone, they said it was like a breath of fresh air, everything just works, wish they done it sooner.

Yea, some people just hate Apple. I have convinced 2-3 of them to just try the iPhone and all of them ended up loving it.

The 12 is definitely a good phone and if I didn’t have one or lost mine I would get it.
But as a 11/XS/X user, the update isn’t very tempting in my opinion.
The problem is apples older phones are so damn good, they last and last and last, picked up a iPhone 7 recently was shocked at how smooth it still was, puts android flagships to shame.
