What pandemic recession? People are buying $1000 phones and stock market is on the rise. Whats going on here!?

iPhone 12 was a super cycle due to 5G, the last super cycle was in 2014 when iPhone 6 Plus was first released. I plan on keeping my 12 Pro Max for at least 4 years and hopefully longer. Apple is going to have to come up with something spectacular to get me to upgrade sooner than that.

Perhaps people are doing the payment-plan thing with their carrier.

Ya know... adding $30 a month to the $100 a month they already have to pay just to have service.

Maybe they're trading in an old phone. Or maybe the carriers are offering all sorts of deals and incentives... buy-one-get-one, etc.

You don't have to walk into the store with literally $1,000 worth of cash to get a new iPhone... :p

But I understand what you're saying.

I switched to 12 Pro Max from XSMax mostly for the camera. I don't really care about anything else like 5G or screen or whatever. So the excuse was pretty much "because I can" and to pass a very good phone to my family.

Your argument is very dated. Some Android phones might be cheaper than iPhones, but with amount of promotions, trade-in values, iPhones aren’t nearly as expensive, when you can get them literally half off when consumers trade their phones in. There’s really no reason anymore to keep using this ‘iPhones are too expensive’, when there’s plenty of incentives to avoid full MSRP.
You're looking only at the US which is only a fraction of the world market.

Oh, ok. Gotcha. So can you indicate to me in your post below that I quoted who are you referring to as ‘folks’ [As in, how much a ‘fraction’ does that represent], because you were vaguely non-specific. Because you certainly didn’t address your post like you were speaking for any part of the world, when you’re using the word ‘folks’.

Here’s your post again for reference:
I don't think so. Almost all the folks that I know on Android are firmly there no matter what. iPhones are too pricey to replace Android. They can only do it at the very top end.

I know and regularly interact with friends and family in many different countries. Many of the phone models by Samsung that are sold in India are at a much lower price point and are not sold in the US.

The improved pricing and the SE no doubt helped. And this is what I have said for years. They can still be a great brand and provide great products at a good price whilst also increasing market share.
Improved pricing? Apple actually increased the regular iPhone price by $100. The iPhone 12 is more expensive than the iPhone 11 at launch.

What’s helping them in the US seems to be the aggressive sales and promo efforts by the carriers. In countries where there’s no carrier subsidies or involvements, the iPhone 12 lineup is ridiculously priced. In my country, the base iPhone 12 mini is $925.

I'm upgrading too, from a 6 years old 6+... to an 8+ :D
Hopefully it's not one of the firsts, it's a 256 GB graded "like new" by a top refurbisher. Should be here any time now, we'll see... the first one I ordered was still factory wrapped and I was very happy, but I had to return it because it was missing the Plus part :D

Isn't that the usual lip service from Tim Cook every earnings? Can see people buying laptops, desktops or even tablets for work and study from home but who needs a new $1K+ phone on lockdown that doesn't add anything new? Still doesn't have Touch ID so you have to expose yourself to COVID-19 pulling down your mask to authenticate with Face ID.
Doesn't matter if you can see it or not. "Largest number of iPhone upgraders ever".

I think it's so cute how you find your way into any thread that has a pro-Apple story and find a way to dump on it. Hate on.

I also upgraded from XR to 12. my parents finally switched from Android to iPhone too after years.

I updated my work phone from 8 to 12 mini. It's gorgeous, even with that giganotch. I love that form factor, the matte black rail that's not a fingerprint magnet, and I hope Apple doesn't discontinue it due to lacklustre sales.

My private 11 Pro stays put, maybe the 13 offers more compelling reasons to upgrade. Though I got to say the flat rail doesn't feel as nice in hand as the curved.

The 12 is definitely a great lineup. The OLED screen across the board and the iPhone 4 like design (my favourite) are killers. 5G is just meh to me, to be fair. I was about to upgrade my 6s to the 12. That blue just looks sick... but the fact my current phone it still runs iOS 14 just fine (especially after a battery replacement), and the fact I am wiping it with 96% alcohol almost everyday, I decided to wait for the 13. If the rumours are to be believed, it will be great upgrading and not losing Touch ID.

Imagine the numbers if the notch was gone. ;)

Okay, maybe not a dealbreaker to many here and Apple users, but some and probably potential Android switchers where it matters.
I've yet to see a real person (ie, a person whose identity I know) to be bothered at all by the notch.

Small businesses are not on the stock market, people don't go eating out, watching a movie, etc, but order gadgets sold by big companies made by big companies.

Does Tim ask each person if they've switched?

It's not like a prerequisite to inform anyone if you've switched right?
They call tell it pretty easily from icloud accounts: new account or one without a linked phone for a while: probably a switcher. An existing one registering a new phone and removing an older one: upgrader.

My guess is that a lot of unused discretionary spending (travel, eating out) went into gadgets and some to the stock market.

I myself bought a used 11 Pro Max for half the original price for my mom. Last years iPhone is of course terribly outdated ;) , but it's a great deal. In a way I also supported the current upgrade cycle.
