Which is why it's great to have a familiar screen to assist with directions, texting, and phone calls....
Vast majority of stuff people do on the road isn't necessary. Don't do it at all when you can avoid it.
A simple, green and red button and somewhere to display/input number is all you need for the phone. If you're scrolling through lots of info no matter how nice the interface you shouldn't be driving.
But I suppose whatever works for each and everyone one of us. I don't have to use CarPlay I guess, (and I don't).

I've been purposely NOT connecting my Phone in my car this last week, just to see how things would be, as I don't use my Impala's built in UI much at all... Yikes! The music part works fine I guess. I've got a USB drive plugged in, but it's only going to play mp3's, not higher quality m4a's. That's a big bummer. I can connect my iPhone, but then the UI on the stereo is super slow to update or reflect any changes, which means I'm still picking up my phone and doing stuff on it while I'm driving. That's not safe. And don't get me started on the Tron Like UI for its Map App! I feel like I'm in the movie Wargames or something. Is this DOS?

So, now I'm supposed to ditch all of the Apple Services I use most of the day for a poorer experience? Especially with these nice sounding Bose speakers..
I don't use Spotify, I use Apple Music. I don't use Google Maps, I use Apple Maps. I use these services so I don't have to scroll thru large lots of info. I also add a lot of the music our Band makes, and listen to that in the car. That's not Spotify. I find Siri in the car to actually work quite well in regards to sending Messages or making calls. It doesn't always get the Playlist I say correct, but it's still better than staring at my phone while driving. I'm beyond a "simple green & red button and somewhere to display/input a number". My Wife's listed along with my Mom and two of my best friends. I could only actually tell you one of their numbers, though. And you're implying I'd have to press numbers to make a phone call? Not just press a name?

Which is why it's great to have options 😉 And then it also seems not so great to remove options...
What works best is what works best for you.

I suppose it depends on what options you have and what you're prepared to put up with.
I'm lucky enough to have an SD card slot in my car and USB slot in my work vehicle. So..........
For music purposes each storage device contains the same data, (that I might update periodically using my computer).
For radio - I have the built in DAB/AM/FM tuner.
For phone - I have the built in BT connection.
For NAV - I have the built in Sat Nav.
Perhaps I'm a little less invested in the available tech than I should be. But yes, options up until the point maybe that it allows people to much to do?

I've been on this planet for 53 years. I've been driving for all but 16 of them. Cars. Trucks. Motorcycles. With and without a trailer attached. I've never caused an accident, despite not having all these exterior-facing sensor-related features. How could that be possible? Oh, gee, I dunno - maybe because when I am driving I am DRIVING and not flicking around with other stuff? Just maybe?

One thing is clear. The ROI for spending some $5-$10K more for a car to get these features is non-existent. Just more crap to break and more crap to repair when some moron runs into you.

When I was in Germany I rented a car. In the parking garage it would NOT SHUT UP!! It keep beeping at whatever. I'm like, "WTH is your problem car? I'm in a PARKING GARAGE!! YEAH, I WILL BE CLOSE TO STUFF!!! SHUT THE HELL UP!!!" I wanted to blow that car up, but I didn't think my rental car insurance would cover it, and I didn't have a bomb with me anyway.

I rented a car a few weeks ago in Florida with all that crap. Stuff beeping and lights flashing. Trying to figure out what the car was trying to tell me (and WHY?) was such a distraction that it was WAY more unsafe than just letting me drive the damned car.
I have a Black Edition Honda Ridgeline. The lane departure sucks. When you turn it on it beeps warning you you are about to drive off the edge of the road even if you are in the middle of the lane. The lane assist feature wants to push you in to the center barrier. The radar cruise control will allow the vehicle to fly up on any slower traffic in front of you, even scare's the crap out of me sometimes, and I use to run motorcycles on the track. 😂

Thankfully I can turn that all off. Unfortunately I also have to turn off the engine auto stop every time I start the truck. 😠 I would have gotten a base model had I known how bad and useless all the "assistants" were.

He claims to be ‘an excellent driver’ from a country that generally drive automatics lol.
Unfortunately we don't have a choice here. 🙄

Having the ability to have Apple Maps in the car has definitely saved me from a few accidents, I'm sure. The lane placement and lack of extreme detail like Google Maps, does help make it less distracting. The reason I don't use Google Maps in the car is because it does show so much detail, I find myself looking at it more than I do the road. Apple's CarPlay, for me anyway, shows just the right amount of info. My Car's built in UI is very clumsy and slow, non-intuitive. Sometimes just pressing one thing causes it to close out all together, and then the traffic light changes and I have to move on... Oh well. To each their own. And again, my only complaint is they're taking away options, not that you or anyone else does or doesn't use them. I'm glad you're enjoying your car's UI.

I don't see a problem with it either, if it is consumer choice and not mandated by govt.
Exactly.... Plus, I've had several cars wrecked in my lifetime by OTHER drivers. (One was when I was parked in a lady's driveway, doing some computer service work for her! I heard her yell to me that my check was on the kitchen counter to pick up when I was done fixing her PC, and she was going out for a bit. Next thing I know, I hear a crash. She pulled her van out of her garage without looking and ran right into my car.)

More warning sensors and systems to help avoid this is a good thing, even if *I* don't personally think I need them.

No. Just a CD player. My current car has just a CD player, no tape, no aux, no Bluetooth. You can’t even replace the cd player unless you also want to remove the heater and A/C, they’re on the same board. It’s these kinda systems that makes me personally say it’s CarPlay or no car for my next car.
They do make radio frequency adapters. plug into your phone and turn your radio to the proper channel/frequency.

I absolutely would not buy any vehicle with that stupid auto start/stop thing unless I could turn it off (once, not every time I go use the car).

After living with a Prius for years, I rented a Mazda with that horrid auto start/stop nonsense while on a vacation trip. I agree that it's a safety hazard.

It's seamless in the Toyota hybrids.

Unfortunately they're all like this now. My mom's new Audi Q3 even does it.

There is some type of resistor/relay hack I can purchase to insert between the engine temperature sensor and the main processor to trick the computer in to thinking the coolant temp is just below where it needs, disconnecting the feature, but I haven't done that yet.

And people wonder why I drive a 16 year old vehicle.

Not me. I had a ‘04 Passat, 5-speed manual, 4-Motion, loved it. Problem was it was getting up there in years and didn’t want to take long road trips with it during the winter months. Kids play hockey and I was putting 20k - 30k per year. The wife couldn’t drive the manual when I started taking her newer vehicle, so I caved. At the time we were in a condo and we’re only allowed 2 vehicles. I miss that car. 😢

Are people not aware of why the start/stop feature exists on modern cars? It’s nothing to do with trying to annoy the driver and everything to do with making sure cars idle at traffic lights and junctions are not polluting the atmosphere any more than they have to.
That or a clever way to sell more injectors, batteries, and starters. There‘s a significant amount of wear and tear and unburnt fuel being generated at every restart. A running system is so finely tuned, exhaust is almost nonexistent at idle. If they would just synchronize the damn lights you wouldn’t have half the start/stops you do have.

Noble thought but who gets "they" to actually do this?

"If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." Anon. 17th C. Scotland
"They" ones artificially forcing this changeover to electric cars of course. 😉
