I’m never going to purchase a GM vehicle, so not an issue for me. However if they want to shoot themselves in the foot for people who do, go for it! 😉

I may not no much about marketing, but I’m pretty confident that there are many more people who will not buy a GM product because they don’t offer CarPlay than there are people who will buy a GM product because they don’t offer CarPlay. No question GM will loose market share by doing this. I guess the question is will they save enough money by removing this option from their products to pay for the amount of customers they will loose. Given that Apple customers tend to be a more premium market and pretty brand loyal, hard to see how GM is doing itself a favor.
Anyhow, I’ve owned a couple GM cars in the past, but for this future, I won’t even bother looking at anything that doesn’t have CarPlay.

Sorry, but you are wrong on both fronts.
MS heavily marketed Office 365 to consumers (e.g. the Family package clearly isn't aimed at business) and even cut off the ability to get the perpetual licence for the Home Use Program.

Name me one piece of software that Apple offers as a subscription that they used to offer as a perpetual licence. The iWork apps, Garage Band, iMovie - all consumer apps from Apple that are not only not subscription but are free. Even MacOS updates are free when they used to be chargable. Services like Apple Music, TV+, News+, Fitness+ etc are not a software subscripton, but a media subscription - you are paying a subscription fee because new media is constantly being added.

I never give Apple a pass - their constant price increases to compoensate for falling device sales and pretty poor level of technology on the non-Pro iPhone are examples of things that are a poor showing, but I just don't see how you can belive that Apple drove SaaS.
I'm not wrong. Apple raked in $80B on "Services", aka SUBSCRIPTIONS, last year. Services revenue is Apple's big bright spot these days. I've made it clear in several of my comments that I'm talking about App Store subscriptions, which Apple controls 100%. Apple might not be selling most of its first party software as a subscription, but they have aggressively pushed the subscription model through the App Store. They are the largest purveyor of subscription software on the planet.

I am just gonna drop this article here.
The same kind of people who "think" customers are willing to pay $135 a month for subscriptions working in that company. This tells us something, doesn't it?

Another article.
This tells everyone why they are doing this and I frankly believe they are shooting themselves in the head.

As someone once said, a bank is just an IT company that specialises in finance. As such, car manufacturers are just hosts for Apple Carplay that allow you to get from A to B. Many drivers are asking about Car Play before they talk about miles per gallon. It's like selling a computer that can only run Linux. No matter how good the computer is, you are just not going to buy it.

I am an excellent driver. 20 years in Alaska will do that to you :)

And yes, I've had a blow out at speed - on a motorcycle.
Do they make run flats for motorcycles?

"I'm an excellent driver". Thought I was too - but there is always something out there that can make you re-think that. If you think that you're so good that you won't consider driver aids, good job I'll never find myself in a car with you, or hopefully even on the same road as you.

That may be the case, but that hasn't prevented Tesla from not including CarPlay in its cars. But, unfortunately for GM, GM is not Tesla when it comes to EV market dominance and can ill afford such stunts.
Carplay was the most-requested extra for Teslas until Apple Music streaming became available last year
it’s unfortunate that we can’t have both, mainly because Carplay is free and uses my phone, while Apple Music is a subscription that also requires the Tesla extra-cost connectivity and reliable internet - the latter not guaranteed for regional travel in Australia
the streaming has been a pleasant surprise because it’s even more music than I had before and I’m accessing everything that’s on my Mac at home as well [iTunes Match is a great thing]

"Excellent" doesn't mean "perfect". I don't strive for perfection...in anything.

Simple rules for being an excellent driver:
  1. Pay attention.
  2. Slow down.
  3. Don't be stupid.
  4. Assume all other drivers violate these rules, simultaneously, all of the time.
  5. Anticipate and drive accordingly.

My concern is to when they’re going to stop supporting this in their current lineup that does work with CarPlay & Android Auto. Will my 6 year old Impala get an OTA update and suddenly remove CarPlay? I mean, it’s paid off. I have the Title. But updates still get pushed out. I highly doubt they would, but I could see it brought up in one of those board meetings 😆

Does you six year old Impala actually get OTA updates? Most older vehicles you have to actually visit a dealership to upgrade the software or use a USB to update it.

Yup! I've turned the auto-updating off in the head unit's settings, but theoretically, yeah it could just continue to get updates. There was an update just recently over this last Winter.

FWIW, some of the recent updates I've seen with mine have helped resolve some of my iPhone's connection issues.

Such a boneheaded move by GM, I was literally on the mailing list for info about the new Chevy Equinox EV. Then I heard this news. I’d rather spend another $6k than deal with a car that has no CarPlay support.

I hadn’t looked a GM product my entire life and I guess I won’t ever again.

It won't require a phone at all!! That's like saying buying an Android tablet requires you to have an Android phone... The most you may need is a Google account (and you can probably create a new one just for the car if you don't want to use your personal one or don't have one).
A google account for my car? I have been complaining here more about the use of Google built-in than I have about GM options to not support CarPlay with it due to the likely tracking.

For some reason I never thought about the Google account. I don’t have one now. I never had one. And I sure won’t create one to drive my car.

Wow. Get over yourself.

There are a lot of examples of hardware with components that are not accessible unless you pay to unlock them. A number of fitness wearables operate on this model. My SPOT emergency beacon includes hardware that allows for more enhanced communication - if I want to pay for it.

It's not unreasonable to think that car manufacturers might build hardware into their vehicles and then later charge for unlocking those features. What taking that approach does to the base price of the vehicle versus the current model of charging for additional features at time of purchase remains to be seen.

But seriously, get over your nasty ego. You're not anymore right than I am. Everyone is just speculating here. And frankly, there's no evidence that GM plans to charge for seat heaters or intermittent wipers or anything else. Also, nothing prevents them from doing all of that AND supporting CarPlay, so the argument that they're dropping CarPlay in order to push subscription features doesn't even add up.
😂 Get over myself? You continue to mention things that aren't related, or have any bearing on the conversation. I'm sorry, but as long as you continue to be wrong, I'm going to continue to point it out. I get that you don't like having someone counter you when you are wrong, but it's not "nasty" to have that conversation.

You are right in in thinking manufactures may try to charge you rent to use hardware already installed in your vehicle, BMW, GM, and Ford have at least considered it and even tried it in some cases, but to think that is a good thing or to defend it, is not good. THEY ARE NOT GOING TO INCLUDE THAT HARDWARE FOR FREE. Having spent thirty years in manufacturing/sales I know how this works.

Is "everyone is just speculating here" or are we paying attention to the market?

Tesla had a great UI. Then Christmas 2021 happened and that UI was a huge pile of crap. They hid things in sub menus and replaced the clean icons with kiddie android crap.

I sold my Model 3 in May 2022 because the update was a complete pile of trash. I spent 5 months trying to get them to restore the software with no luck.
Should Tesla support appple CarPlay?

The better way is better training/education.

Require what most consider "advanced" driving instruction before getting a license (at 16). Require annual training until the age of 21.

(There are a few programs out there... Many local police departments have... something. The most affordable national program I can think of with certified in-car coaches in Tire Rack Street Survival - in partnership with the BMWCCA and the SCCA. The main limitation there is the car clubs finding suitable large open paved sites with owners/operators who will allow the sites to be used for these events.)

And, then, require additional/refresher training every 5 years, moving forward.

Tire Rack Street Survival is an example of an amazing and affordable teen driving program, that I'd love to see as required training. I'd love it if the AARP "classes" for older drivers added (any) similar practical training with in-car coaches. The AARP classes (at least in the area my parents live) are a joke in comparison to what many local police departments offer teen drivers.

Making people dependent on tech to keep them "safe" will only make them lazier and even less attentive and less safe on the road.

Sigh.
You covered both of my thoughts.

1. It's a driver issue not a vehicle issue
2. I don't think I would want the features either. I've been without for 34 years. What if these things fail you. I'd rather just be in control and pay attention all the time.

EDIT I do like the backup cam though.
