I was already on the fence about this, and given how well my Echo dot works with Alexa, and how I had to yell "hey siri" five times in the car to call my wife and it ended up saying "Ok, bye!," "Sorry, i can't do that," and then read me an original poem, I pretty much decided right there I wasn't going to get the homepod until Siri got some major improvements.

I'm betting this isn't down to hardware. I think this will be them trying to improve the services it offers...Tim said they would be developing the services side of it a lot, even after release. People will find it a hard price to swallow if it only supports Apple Music playback, considering competing products from Sonos are cheaper and support all music services.

Tim said that a stand alone device wasn’t needed because everyone had an iPhone. Apple should have been quicker with HomePod by at least 12 months. They are losing ground to competition.

I suspect this is a factor. The competition is coming out with "good enough" alternatives at a much faster pace, so Apple may feel that they really need to rock the house with their first version... a device that the competition can't touch. But is there really room in that product space?

What makes competitors devices "good enough", "alternatives" as if those devices weren't the pioneers in this realm, and Apple is actually the alternative to those? I personally feel that Google's Home's Max will sound better and more robust than the Homepod, especially when you compare the components and designs of the two. Then when you compare Google Assistant to Siri...I mean I don't even have to say much here, cause it's no match.

On the other hand, if someone has the mindset that they can only use Apple products, of course the homepod would be their go to product. I would like to see Siri get a complete overhaul, so that the people within its ecosystem can really enjoy things like home automation and all the cool things you can do with Google Home's/Alexa's/JBL, etc.

Hey! Now you'll have more money to do all those things! Take a joke buddy. Sensitive much?

Not sensitive, but I see a lot of comments in these threads where people seem to be telling other people how to spend their hard earned cash! Which kindof irks me to some degree :) Apologies for not seeing the funny side of your comment ;)

And you're actually correct - I'm sure my wife will benefit from me having a few extra hundred pounds in my bank account this Christmas!

Damn. With Amazon releasing new Echos with much better sound quality than their previous models, I wonder if they need to get that price down to a more reasonable level.

Think they might be going the opposite route, keeping the price point but trying to improve the product more to justify it.

Genuinely peeved. It'll be great, but not sure why the delay. I've been holding out for this bad boy.

The delay is because both Apple's competent engineers are too busy trying to get the bugs out of iOS 11 so they couldn't be redirected to making the speaker when they were scheduled.

This is going to push back the mac pro and the mac mini will be bumped right off the list. I hope they give those two engineers a much needed vacation though.

You know the HomePod has lesser sound quality based on what exactly?

Based on my own experience, levitynyc was referring to a significant improvement *within* the Echo line rather than a comparison against Apple. The new devices absolutely DO have better sound and are curiously either less expensive, add new major features, or both!

We're all anxiously awaiting Apples first foray into this realm, but many of us refuse to stop progress in the meantime.

Hahaha why did they announce this at WWDC?

I don't get it either. They not only gave competitors a heads up, but it was far too early, considering it wasn't going to ship until December. It's too bad, cos I was planning to buy a bunch of these as gifts.
