fast cars can still reach 150mph regardless of registered horsepower. Yet, cars have lower pricing for lower HP. If iPad Air only has 9 cores vs. 10 as originally advertised, they need to offer refunds to those who have already purchased it.

This is a shady marketing practice.

This has nothing to do with practical impacts to most users, or vague comparisons in a keynote.

I think Apple will find themselves on the wrong side of this if they don't do something other than point to vague performance claims. Those may have been correct, but they also claimed a number of GPU cores which was not correct. I don't think Apple intentionally published a false number, but regardless of how important anyone here thinks that 10th core may or may not be, people made a purchasing decision believing there were 10. They might have made that same decision if Apple had publicized 9, but Apple has no way to know that after the fact. They need to assume people would not have.

I think Apple should take a step toward notifying everyone who bought an Air before the mistake was corrected, offering a partial refund or gift card in compensation for the false claim, and open a return window long enough for people to learn that their product isn't what they thought it was and to return it if they're dissatisfied.

At first I wanted to ask, "With a company as large as Apple, how does this even happen?"

Then I remembered how our giant government works and it all made sense.

Yes, because a small mom-and-pop computer company would have much better quality control, and not use any binned chips in their iPads.

Of course it's the "same" performance when Apple delivers fewer GPU cores.

But when Apple charges $50 for an extra core, they'll tell you it's much faster. 😄
Or when it’s time for you to get 16gb of ram and 1tb “these are special ram and ssd so apple has to charge a premium for the best quality parts!” $600 for $200-$300 in parts.

It's a tempest in a teapot. Ninety nine percent of the folks joining in the outcry could not accurately articulate what a tenth extra graphics core would do for their workflow.
Why are you defending this it’s a huge mistake? They said it had 10 cores; it actually has 9. That’s a straight up lie. You know how much extra they charge for the 10 core vs the 9? It’s like $100. If it’s good enough difference to charge $100 then you should be honest about it. It’s misleading and Apple should be held to account. This is unacceptable from a company like Apple. this significantly hurts Apple’s trustworthiness .

Absolutely *nobody* is returning this Air strictly because it has a 9-core GPU.

Most customers don’t even know what a core count is. They look at the price, does it run smooth, is it a good weight, does it feel good in the hands. That’s all.

They don’t go on a forum like this to talk about cores and clocks. They don’t even know what is a macrumors or Apple insider.

All they need to do is offer an extended return period for any device purchased prior to this announcement. Give them another 30 days.

No class action, case closed and the people here that are whining, that are not even affected, can pound sand

Sorted

Apple didn't mislead a benefit or performance figure—they made a typo on a tech page. It was corrected. No harm, no foul. If anyone is seriously hurt by this, they can return it and not have an iPad Air.

I think the reason why sensible people aren't outraged is because intent matters—Apple clearly had no malice or intent to harm or take advantage of. Plus I'd like to not be outraged for the next three minutes, please.

Any yet this was still a lie. And it makes it harder and harder to trust Apple

why do we spend so much time interpreting “what regular people notice” when we want to defend apple.

Uh regular people “trust” apple to tell the truth. That’s the discussion here did apple tell you it was a 10 core processor and sell you a 9 core processor (and YES we know the diff between 9 core and 10 core m2 this Is a known product and apple’s perf claims are useless to interpret 2x faster than nearest competitor isn’t a metric).

iPad Air isn’t JUST for average people there are enthusiasts too but the issue isn’t is the iPad Air m2 a good product, it’s a GREAT product it’s did apple tell you it’s the 10 core M2 you know and love and then sell you the the 9 core m2 you know and love instead? If so then apple needs to make it right and FIX THEIR COMPANY. This is SLOPPY SLOOPY SLOPPY! Those are the two issues here. This isn’t a review of the iPad Air m2 it’s did apple mess up? And the answer is HECK YES!!! Even if they told you it was 9 and it was the 10 this is sloppy.

Oh by all means there’s no need for outrage, but that doesn’t excuse the sloppiness. We are used to well run apple. Not typo on a marketing page apple. It’s not just this mistake there’s been a stream of these. Apple is probably my favorite tech company, I enjoy using their products and the iPad m2 is great. But when it comes to marketing materials 1. I can’t assume intent the court can figure that out when it swoops in a collects emails If it comes to that. 2. 9 vs 10 is a difference they shouldn’t have made that mistake. 3. Every word on a marketing page is scrutinized and carefully selected right down to the typeface. A typo in your text to your spouse, email to your colleague is fine. but when you fundamentally report a different processor is at core of your device and it goes on for weeks… that’s sloppy and that’s perhaps the more concerning thing what is going on inside apple that’s leading to sloppiness. They need to tighten ship.

The entire tech sector is conspiring to ruin civilization with AI. Anyone with intellectual authority in the space is saying, "This is a mistake. We're heading toward doom." The AI that is being built will build new systems that will build new systems that will scale faster than intended because you can't firewall something that has 8 trillion times more intelligence than the firewall system built to contain it. And unlike a fire, we won't see it coming. It will play the role and only switch when it knows it has the advantage. So one day you will wake up and your money won't be in your bank account, and the electrical grid will be off, and normal order will grind to a halt.

Where will you even get water when supplies run out? How will you defend your home from the people who want the water you have left?

But never mind about that—Apple made a typo!

It's called perspective-taking. We imagine our family, our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers—and then we ask, "Who here was harmed?"

Do you know of anyone who will be returning this device because they suddenly discovered that performance hasn't changed—it's the same GPU they've been using the whole time?

Apple is excused because they made an inconsequential mistake that does not affect the performance of the device—AND IT WAS CORRECTED.

If anyone is personally damaged, they can return the device.

Done. Theres nothing else to scream about.

Though Apple mistakenly listed the M2 chip in the iPad Air as having a 10-core GPU instead of a 9-core GPU, the performance claims that it shared during the MacBook Air launch and in marketing materials are accurate.

m2-iPad-Air-Horizontal-Feature-Orange.jpg

In a statement provided to 9to5Mac, Apple said that the details it shared on the iPad Air's performance were always based on a 9-core GPU.

Apple's website says that the M2 chip is "nearly 50 percent faster than the previous generation," and that it specifically has "25 percent faster graphics."

Apple recently updated its technical specifications website for the M2 iPad Air to state that the device has a 9-core GPU. Prior to the update, it listed a 10-core GPU. The prior-generation iPad Pro had a 10-core GPU, so it is a surprise that the iPad Air version is limited to a 9-core GPU.

Other M2 chip specifications have not changed. The iPad Air has an 8-core CPU with four performance cores and four efficiency cores, along with 8GB RAM and a 16-core Neural Engine.

Because it took Apple several days to correct the chip error on its website, some users may have purchased the iPad Air believing it had a 10-core GPU. The two week return period has expired for those who bought on launch day, but customers would have a good argument for a return exception.

What about my M2 iPad Pro? How many GPU cores does it have? Will that also change at a later date? Why does the performance not change when the cores reduce/increase? Is the core count a humbug? So many questions..

Nope. It was a *mistake*. Perhaps you don't know the difference between a mistake and a lie?

In the end, the customer gets the performance that was claimed/advertised. And that's what counts.

Which makes this whole episode mice nuts. But that won't stop the oversized outrage. That's a 20 year tradition here being outraged at the drop of a hat. Simply because it feels good.

Get out of here with all your logical sense and reason.
When you are buying tech gadgets online, what do you base your judgment on? Don't you compare specs? Or are you one of those people who go to a showroom, see it, and then buy it? If you are the latter kind, then there is nothing affecting you here. The problem is for the people of the former category. They might have selected a different model/product or totally not bought anything based on the core count? If it is not important, why do they tout the core counts in the specs?

When will it start to affect you, when you know that the basic specs that a company puts on the website will change after you purchase the product? How can you make such a basic mistake? Basically, only Apple would have known if it was 10 core or 9 core GPU so only Apple could have caught the mistake. How many more mistakes has Apple done and even they have not caught them or decided they need not be upfront about those mistakes?

Yep. That is why they do not put the core count anywhere on their website. Ooops, but they do. Right at the top of the ordering page. If it is an insignificant spec, why do they put it in the specs? Would you be okay if they tell you tomorrow that they made a mistake and CPU had only 7 cores, RAM was only 4 GB, and the NPU had only 8 cores? When will stop mattering to you?

“Oh no. I was totally on board to buy with 10 cores but not with 9! I want a refund!” Said nobody

If you’re buying an iPad Air it’s because you have less demanding tasks than the need for an iPad Pro. Most people just want a device that does most of the basics. And for that I imagine it works just fine

So, you will be paying for all those returned iPads? Internationally? Because, there is no returns for iPads (or any Apple product) after the initial 14-day period in my country. Just wanted to ask. No offense meant.

But I desperately need that 10th core in order to discover the next prime number!

Wah... :(

It is literally one of the four specs that Apple mentions in comparisons. And they got one wrong "by mistake?" Do you even comprehend how big a mistake it is?

If TSMC delivered a million M2 chips telling Apple that they are 10 core GPU chips and then later told Apple that it was a mistake, would Apple accept it?
