MacRumors Editors believe that the effect of blooming on the iPad Pro looks less severe in person than it does in images, likely due to exposure and image processing.
Pretty much. Looked at a buddy's and couldn't see it on the start up screen. I'm sure peeps are cranking the highlights to get their point across.

miniLED is also just LCD with a different back light.

Only some more expensive iPhone variants use OLED. Even the Pro XDR display (the 5-6k$ thing) does bloom because of the limitation of FALD.

Oh I’m well aware of the different technologies, compared to previous this is definitely an improvement. I just held off from buying the first redesigned iPad Pro because I thought it had OLED, and that sentiment continued with every revision; I never paid it that much attention tbh.

Anyone who says they don’t see it is lying

Not saying it’s deal breaking, but it’s definitely noticeable
If you try to find faults at regular LCD you can see backlight bleed, grey black etc.
If you try to find faults at OLED it's burn-in and yellow tint/uniformity issues (Just go to the iPhone section in these forums)
If you try to find faults at mini-led, you will see blooming.

Its give and take in all of these scenarios.

I had been wondering how big the issue was for the 32” XDR display for some additional context…it’s significantly worse than the Dell’s Mini LED from the looks of it.

I get my iPad on Thursday so I’ll be interested to see this for myself. Now that everyone’s talking about it, I notice blooming on my iPad 2018, iPhone (OLED) and OLED TV to some extent. Even more so as I become more tired.

This is all in a dark room.

I find the iPhone‘s OLED to be pretty frustrating sometimes at night, with the way that you can see the pixels taking too long to update as your scrolling, creating a ghosting effect. Then I try remind myself to not be so picky. I assume this isn’t the case with Micro LED and/or 120HZ.

Disagree. Scenes in movies where there are light posts have blooming.

also, others showed more real world examples of blooming.

Disagree with what? That the picture in this article is absolutely not showing what the blooming in real life looks like? That‘s just stupid. Do you have the device? No? Well I do and I just watched the video that this still was apparently taken from. And it looked glorious.

Noone said there is no blooming at all. It‘s just extremely minor compared to what pictures like this seem to show.

I got today my 12.9" 2021. Yes, there is some blooming but those pictures make it seem 15x worse than it really is in IRL. (…) the difference in real life and what overexposure in cameras can do.

Exactly.

It is WORSE than these photos show. Multiple times I’ve attempted to capture what I’m seeing on camera but my iphone can’t effectively capture it due to the contrast of the scene. It looks HORRIBLE compared to a standard LCD since the bloom is so pronounced. On top of that, when watching Netflix at night the blooming goes into the dark bars above and below the film are constantly changing causing a huge distraction.

This may be the first iPad I return, having owned every single generation since release.
I will also add that this is with the brightness turned almost all the way down (since I’m viewing at night).

Holy s*** that Dell screen is 4500€ here.

So which one is better, Ipad 2021 blooming effect or iPhone 12 series OLED raised blacks?
And please, dont tell me they are already fixed as they are or at all. Damn Apple

I agree! Josh Teder's tweets speak volumes. Can't wait for the 2022 OLED displays on 11" Pro & Air. Hopefully they bring this same technology to the 12.9" Pro.

I was watching Altered Carbon the other day as an awesome example of the HDR qualities and deep blacks of the display. No blooming.

Strike 1. The XDR display along with the M1 are the primary reasons I was considering upgrading from my 2020 12.9 IPP.

Blooming = MiniLED
OR
PWM = OLED.

I would have liked to see OLED in the new iPads but burn-in is a real thing. I'm always worried that my LG OLED TV is going to burn-in and I hate having to worry.

I know the latest generation OLED panels have less risk and there are a ton of mitigation systems, but OLED is not without it's disadvantages too.

Yeah I played with one for a few minutes at the Best Buy store and it looked really nice but that wasn’t enough time to give it a full take. Anyway, I’m perfectly happy with my iPad Air 4 I got this past February, it’s an awesome device and when it comes time for me to replace that we will see what Apple has to offer down the road. Even if I didn’t get the Air, the 12.9 is a tough sell for me because I LOVE the size you get but the form factor is so unwieldy whereas the 11 inch is perfect.

In terms of OLED, I also have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and I LOVE the screen on that thing, it’s truly a joy to look at.

Yeah, no perfect solution here... if Apple sticks with the older IPS then people say "CONTRAST SUCKS!" if they go with MiniLED people say "DIMMING ZONES SUCK!!!" if they were to go with AMOLED (like Samsung does) people will say "MY HEADACHES!!! I CANT TAKE THE PULSE WAVES!!!"

So what are you gonna do? lol

Either way, Apple should have probably figured this would become a big deal and they should have been more upfront with the limitations of the technology.

Totally agree, yes there is a tiny bit in a really dark room is looking at white text on a black background, but its really not a problem for me. All these images and people saying that the new iPad is crap, I’m guessing most of them don’t even own the new iPad and just going on the BS they see on this forum!

Definitely not seeing this on my ipad, on Netflix of a night time I see it blooming on the title of the show but this is only there for a few seconds, I have not seen anything bleed into the black bars.

Are you watching at night (pitch black) with brightness turned all the way down? I bet with brightness up you are so blinded you can’t see it.
