I don't think this is something you can check using Terminal. You can check this using console.
Go to Launchpad and open Console application. On the console Application you should see your device name listed. Click on start streaming. Use the search bar on the top right of the window to filter out bluetooth logs. Use the keyword 'GetControllerInfo' in the search bar if you are just looking for LMP version info. Now turn off and turn on Bluetooth.
You can also connect an iPhone to your Mac and check the Bluetooth version. Make sure Mac is trusted for the messages to start streaming and toggle bluetooth on iPhone.

How cool! I didn't even know this existed. Thank you.

Yep, mine says bluetooth 5.2 (2021 16' MBP).

From what I can tell Bluetooth 5.2 includes Low Energy! Very cool.

Is it on the latest MacOS? If so, could you post the log message the you see on the Console that shows the LMP version and firmware?

Yes on the latest MacOS:

I never heard of such a thing.

Perhaps that is being conflated with paid upgrades? If enabling that feature was part of the next OS version. At one time, Apple used to charge for major version OS upgrades but that was a long time ago. Might have been before the iPod touch.

Both are true. Both happened in the wake of the Enron accounting scandal. Apple was extra-careful not to be accused of accounting fraud, so in those two cases, they charged a fee:

* early iPod touch iOS upgrades
* some MacBooks that were hardware-ready for Wi-Fi 4, but needed a firmware update because the standard hadn't been finalized

In both cases, the worry was that the product's value would change after the fact, and that this would trigger a GAAP investigation.

A few years later, interpretation of the laws had settled, and Apple stopped doing this practice. Which is also part of why macOS upgrades are now free.

This Bluetooth tale is getting more interesting. When do you think the M1 P/M Macs and iPhone 13 models got this update, at the same time the 13" M2 Air got upgraded to 5.3 (though it seems like some are still on 5.2 still as shown by comments above)?
I don’t know when. But 13” M2 Air also shows 5.2. At least, the one I have checked(on latest MacOS) and the one @foldpages reported above.

FYI with MacOS Sonoma, MacBook Pro M1 Pro's bluetooth is now 5.3. Also with iOS 17, 13 pro max bluetooth has been upgraded to 5.3.
Are you referring to the BCM_4387 module? And from what it seems there was a hardware revision in Oct 2022 so where is the proof its capable/been upgraded?

Please show us the work-where is your proof? The chipset on the MBP was supposedly produced before the change was made on the MBA M2s.
You can check this yourself if you have a MBP. Launch Console app and start streaming MacBook logs. Toggle Bluetooth and look for LMP version in the logs. Similarly connect your iPhone to MacBook and stream the iPhone logs. This is obviously not a chipset upgrade. Just firmware. Having said that, I don’t know if there is a perceivable benefit with Bluetooth after the upgrade.

Apple's specifications for the 2021 (M1 Pro/Max) MacBook Pro still say Bluetooth 5.0 (not anything higher).

It's possible that Apple just hasn't updated this page. In any event it would be nice to see a clear indication that the 2021 MacBook Pro's do in fact support Bluetooth 5.3 after macOS 14 upgrade.

So has it been officially confirmed that M1 MacBook Pros will now have Bluetooth 5.3 after upgrading to MacOS 14 Sonoma?

Can anyone with a 2021 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro confirm?

Registered on the forum just for this as I can't find info on this topic anywhere else on the internets.
