This happened with the Vision Pro, too. The 1080p AirPlay was reduced to 720p. Exposes Apple to detrimental reliance / false advertising complaints.

I’m not one to talk when it comes to clerical errors, but I’m also not writing technical copy for Apple….

Same when the iPhone 13 models were announced, the non-pro models were $30 more expensive than Apple claimed during the Keynote. They were not transparent about this, clearly displaying the carrier price rather than the Apple unlocked price, which to me is false advertising, or at least dubious scummy behavior.

Given the general use case of the iPad Air, that missing GPU will have no effect on the vast majority of users, even those using the new iPad Air for drawing. Missing a GPU core on the M4 iPad Pro, that's a very different story.

Does it really matter? with iPadOS you can still do everything on chips from five years ago

I still remember back in 2010-2015 when iPads were pretty much considered to be a large iPod Touch by the tech community. It looks fancier now, but not much have changed; I still can't believe anyone is serious when they say iPad is their main computer, I honestly cannot imagine it.

You still can. I mean some productivity apps are available on iPad, such as Final Cut.

I don’t know how if working on iPad Pro is as equal productive as working on Mac/PC with keyboard and mouse (and multiple monitor support) .

There aren’t shortage of YouTuber clamming iPad is their main machine….

It doesn't really matter if it's material to performance or not, if they've been selling 9 core devices claiming they are 10 core devices, that's a problem. I'm curious what caused the confusion, but I doubt the lawyers will care.

Honestly I bought the air cause I wanted the pro soc without spending pro prices. All I ever do with it is surf and watch videos. I have yet to do anything hardware intensive with a iPad.

Depends on what you use it for yes? Those of us who grew up using standard computers, especially early ones that were incredibly limited, are 'trained' to think one way, those folks are younger and used to more flexible systems are just that.. more flexible. I am ancient, and so can afford both, have both (multiple versions of), and tend to use my iPads at least half of my screen time. Would I want to use ONLY it? Nope. Would I want to use ONLY a MacBook or worse only a desktop? Nope. Mostly it's divided between office time and home time. But when I travel it's mostly the iPad. But I don't have a problem imagining people that only do email, note taking, internet, and of course video watching using only an iPad, especially with the Magic Keyboard to dock to. I am a little more skeptical of those that need to use the Microsoft suite. It's really a matter of expectations and what you have to do.

Sorry a tad off topic but you did open the door :). As far as GPUGate goes... on the surface it's going to be a world of pain for Apple, but I will wait for full details to come out before attending the latest roast Tim rally. Most likely it's a clerical mistake, but how they compensate early buyers... will be interesting.

Agreed. If you're a consumer, you should care whether or not the missing core is important to you, because if not a missing core, it could be something else you'd care about next time (memory, screen brightness, etc.). Establishing precedence that allows companies to skirt around false advertising laws only hurts consumers collectively in the long run.

Probably hallucinated crassly fabricated lies by their new AI.

Next MacBook: 6 efficiency cores, 6 performance cores, and 6 hallucinated crassly fabricated lies of cores thanks to the updated neural engine.

Hilarious, but I fixed that for you. 'Hallucinations' makes it sound AI has some sort of fever-induced errors rather than doing precisely what it was trained to do (plausible output, not accurate output). We need to stop using euphemisms about AI unethical behaviour, even in jokes.

People live different lives.

Both my parents don’t have laptops, just iPads.

I have clients that travel all the time. I finally got one upgraded from the 2012 MBP he was using to an Apple Silicon model, but that just sits in the office permanently and he travels/lives his life on his IPad Pro.

Tech people need to get it through their heads that WE are the outliers in terms of technological needs.

Well, Youtubers whine about the iPad being too fast and too thin. Now Apple just has to make them thicker. They remind me of when Homer Simpson designed a car.

We also need to stop imbuing these algorithms with agency. AI can't lie, or be unethical. It can be trained to do so by lying or unethical humans. If not trained specifically for that purpose, then the AI response is simply wrong.
