Wireless, though?

I'm on a iLX-107 and am never going back to cables... I keep wondering why not more manufacturers implement this - are there contracts with BMW preventing this? This is such a no-brainer

What blows my mind is that you have to plug it in. Hey Tim Cook... Smartphones have Bluetooth, duh. Use it!

What blows my mind is how animated people can get about a subject, but still not find the two seconds needed to google it.

Apple CarPlay is not an important feature for a car. It is clunky and adds very little usefulness. I have it in my car and it is pretty much left alone. I wanted it to be something useful but it turned out not to be.

Conversely, I walked off of the dealership lot because the car I was looking at didn't offer CarPlay/Android Auto. When they found one that did, they got the sale, and I've used it basically every day since.

The implementation and certification is probably non-trivial, and manufacturers juts don't feel that skipping it is costing them sales.

And in the meantime, Honda continues to ignore its owners of 2016-up vehicles, with Honda Display Audio units, by offering them a field-tested firmware upgrade to retrofit these cars with CarPlay.

My 2016 Accord has CarPlay? Always has!

I don't use it as often as I thought I would. Mainly because it's not wireless CarPlay. 2018 Accord.

You knew it wasn’t wireless before you bought the car. Bluetooth in Honda’s are terrible compared to CarPlay. 99% or people that don’t like CarPlay don’t know how to use it properly.

The only thing I’d like is an option to enable DND while driving while also using CarPlay.

I have DND whilst driving on my iPhone. Settings -> Do not disturb -> Scroll down and select Activate under Do not disturb whilst driving. 3 options, Automatically, When connected to Car Bluetooth and Manually.

Please get google maps! Apple maps is still not good enough. I live in the Dallas area and it hasn't been reliable the few times I tried it out.

Apple today confirmed that over 400 vehicle models now support its CarPlay software platform in the United States.

While not reflected on Apple's list of available models yet, the latest vehicle with CarPlay is Subaru's new 2019 WRX, introduced on Thursday and available at dealerships across the United States this summer. Previous model years of the WRX did not have CarPlay, making this a new addition.

CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on all 2019 WRX models, accessible through Subaru's new Starlink infotainment system. The base trim, priced from $27,195, is equipped with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while Premium and Limited trims have seven-inch touchscreens from $29,495 and $31,795 respectively.

Subaru's infotainment system also features Aha Radio, Pandora, hands-free phone calls and audio streaming via Bluetooth, AM/FM, a single-disc CD player, SiriusXM satellite radio compatibility, and a rear-view camera. Blind spot detection with lane change assist technology is available in higher trims.

Subaru's other vehicle models with CarPlay in the United States:2017-2018 Impreza
2018 Outback
2018 Crosstrek
2019 Ascent
2019 ForesterCarPlay mirrors several iPhone functions onto a vehicle's dashboard display, enabling drivers to get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, listen to music, and more while staying focused on the road. The platform can be controlled via touchscreen, Siri voice commands, or steering wheel buttons.

Surveys suggest CarPlay is a highly desired feature with strong customer satisfaction. Most automakers currently support wired CarPlay, meaning the iPhone must be connected with a Lightning cable, but wireless CarPlay is available in select BMW models or via aftermarket receivers from Alpine and Pioneer.

With the recent additions of Toyota, Lexus, and Mazda, nearly every major automaker in the United States offers or will soon offer CarPlay.

That’s how I have mine. It’s works as expected when I do not use CarPlay and only connect to Sync3.

But when I plug it in and use CarPlay messages come through on screen.

Yes, great, using CarPlay and in 4 years it will be obsolete. The cars last longer than the apple products. What are all going to do in 10 years when their CarPlay is completely obsolete?

That's still better than the automaker's solutions, which were already 4 years obsolete before they were even put in.

CarPlay is pretty useless without google maps and Spotify.

You can't Spotify? I don't have CarPlay, but my friend does. He uses Spotify and the on-screen controls work for that.

Also Spotify is specifically listed as CarPlay compatible in Kenwood's carplay page:

Nah, need Waze for the speed traps and red light cameras, etc. If only Apple, Google & others would add this!

...

Don't buy a car from any company that can't implement CarPlay or Android Auto on the tablets they glue to their dashes.

LOL. I can't put such a high priority buying a car on whether it has CarPlay or not. Mine does, but that's a bonus. I would have bought the car whether it has CarPlay or not, and CarPlay was not a factor even shopping for cars.
But I like the current design of the WRX & WRX STI.

There's a chance I might not like the redesign.
I just traded the second of my two '11 WRX STIs for a 2018 Outback 3.6R Touring (first one was traded for a Forester several years ago). As fun as The STI is to drive, I'm done with the expense of operating and maintaining high performance cars. I love the Outback.

Here's an idea: just drive responsibly.

The implementation and certification is probably non-trivial, and manufacturers juts don't feel that skipping it is costing them sales.

So you're telling me BWM is the only manufacturer capable of implementing it? Oh, and of course after-market HU manufacturers like Pioneer and Alpine. I highly doubt it.

Also, with all the "wireless" promotion Apple is doing (no Headphone Jack, wireless charging etc. etc.), you'd really think they'd be pushing it more. Again, this is such a no-brainer and once you've experienced it, you'd never go back.

CarPlay works very well in my 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71 pickup. I use Apple Maps often and really don’t have issues with it.

Even my patents Hyundai 2015 i30 Active has Car play, but she doesn't use it.. She uses handsfree and USB storage for music, so that's probably good enough.

AUX port > CarPlay
at least in the Chevy Suburban I tried it in. I'm guessing people here aren't having the technical problems I had, but the UI is also very questionable. Why does it show a full-screen banner when I plug it in, totally ****blocking me when I want to pick my song?

Google Maps's app sucks. Keeps showing my map upside down and kills my battery. Used to have pretty broken voice nav, with the thing saying "In 300 feet.... [5 seconds later after I already missed it] turn left." Apple Maps has been treating me fine, with directions more accurate if anything, though GMaps has more POIs.

The Media Infotainment system in VW Golf 2018 works a treat. Have CarPlay but can't be bothered. The wired link? Huh???

In-built Nav system works fast and well on the large screen. And links to dash view as well.

People are distracted enough in cars. Do we really need them fiddling too much more with apps? Drive and concentrate for a change. Or make all new cars self-driving. There are too many people who should not be on the roads these days.

I don’t know if this is feasible, but what if Apple made a USB adapter that would make CarPlay compatible vehicles wireless? I’m happy with how CarPlay works on my Focus ST. But if was able to go wireless, it would be even better.

Mazda, heard that before, they have been claiming for 2 years to be "just" about to add support for Car Play and Android auto, even the new 2019 CX-3 doesn't claim any support for it.

Don't buy a car from any company that can't implement CarPlay or Android Auto on the tablets they glue to their dashes.

Welcome to my world: I was all set to buy a Mazda3 5-door, but it didn't have carplay and I found Mazda's infotainment system lacking... and they 'promised' that they would have Carplay next month, this was in Dec 2017. I ended up buying a Kia CUV, a decision I am regretting, since I'm really more of a sedan / 5-door type of guy. On the plus side: the Kia comes AA and Carplay compatible from day one.

100% agree. I fully expect Apple Maps to not even be able to find destinations. My on board nav system is way better.

And when was the last time there was an actual update to CarPlay? There are tons of things that need fixing — or at least configuration options.

For a system designed to be hands-free/eyes free there is a ton of clicking around. How about an option to automatically read SMS, and like at 2x speed?

I don’t think there is a member on MacRumors that doesn’t enjoy a good rant

Carplay WAS update with the iOS 11.

Hopefully BMW's shady stunt of charging a monthly subscription for CarPlay won't catch on.

Wait, what?? Audi and Mercedes don't do this... and MB charges for EVERYTHING as a separate option.

CarPlay to me feels like a 1.0 product. Extremely basic, like OS X 10.0 (Cheetah) or iOS 1.0 on the first gen iPhone.

CarPlay is definitely still better than most infotainment systems.

But honestly I think Microsoft hit a home run with Sync 3 in Ford - it is by far the best infotainment system. Sync 3 is much more featured, advanced, and pleasurable to use than Apple CarPlay. I have actually disabled Apple CarPlay for preference of Sync 3 + Audio Bluetooth + Waze Navigation through docked iPhone in cupholder mount (Waze for Sync 3 + iPhone was just released a few days ago from this post around May 20 2018).

Bought a 2018 Accord a few months back, and we're using and enjoying CarPlay daily. Sure it's limited, but it's fast, easy to use, fully integrated with the phone, and always online, which is a HUGE improvement from the proprietary crap offered by automakers in years past (and by many still today). Siri is also 500% more reliable than any voice system baked into a car that I've ever tried. It's highly accurate for dictating texts, for example. Searching for a business... not so much, but one can always use Google on the phone then cut and paste the address into CarPlay to navigate.

Also, thankfully, Honda put a highly responsive Android based tablet in the dash as the infotainment system, and it runs CarPlay extremely well. The infotainment has a retina-level display, clear and bright, with no input lag whatsoever. Not wireless CarPlay, unfortunately, which kind of renders the Qi wireless charger in the car useless, but otherwise great. Again, miles ahead of what I'm used to with in-car infotainment systems.

Apple Maps in our area (Northern California) is plenty good. It's not AS good as Google Maps, but accurate enough, and improving annually.

Car makers have been unsurprisingly reluctant to cede control of the big display in the middle of their vehicles to Apple/Android (some more than others), but they seem to be coming around now. I can tell you that, when car shopping last year, I would not even consider a model without CarPlay. I think many are in the same boat.

THIS! I use Carplay almost exclusively (not that there is anything wrong with the Kia UVO 3 system which was designed with Microsoft, it's certainly better than the crap Land Rover and Jaguar use) to the point where I need to figure out how to make the USB port the only audio port that works when I start the car up or unplug the phone from the cable. I find Apple Maps far more improved than it used to be, including the latest Carplay update with the road speed limits and exact lane turns. Is it perfect? No. Is it as good as Google Maps? No. But it's getting there, Apple is a far later entry into the game when it comes to maps. Siri understands me clearly enough where I think only twice have I had to repeat myself. I ended up buying a car I wasn't gaga over becaseu one of the selling points was that it had Carplay and I wouldn't get a car again that didn't have it.

Do you have wireless charging? Because wireless Carplay is going to be useless if it's going to eat through your battery if it isn't also being wirelessly charged. I haven't tried, but Carplay does ask me if I want to activate BT and my car has both BT and WiFi built in, so it might do wireless Carplay, BUT I don't have wireless charging.

CarPlay is pretty useless without google maps and Spotify.

Why doesn’t it have Spotify? Isn’t that Spotify’s fault? I don’t have CarPlay in my current car, but I’m in the market and have been doing test drives, and I noticed that my Google Play Music app shows up and works well in CarPlay.
