Why doesn’t it have Spotify? Isn’t that Spotify’s fault? I don’t have CarPlay in my current car, but I’m in the market and have been doing test drives, and I noticed that my Google Play Music app shows up and works well in CarPlay.

Carplay DOES have Spotify!

Using CarPlay in my Ford is very nice. Apple Maps and Music work very well for me.

The only thing I’d like is an option to enable DND while driving while also using CarPlay.

After living with the abysmal audio controls in my Ford for over a year since new, I finally decided to try CarPlay. I despise the way the native Ford system makes it very difficult to select albums, among other gripes. Also, I don’t use navigation ever, but I wanted to be able to look at a better map for traffic conditions than the one built in. Aside from those two things I didn’t need anything else from CarPlay.

The setup process was tedious and more than a little alarming as the Sync system asked if it could grab my contacts (I refused), then it told me it was going to be talking with some central Ford server somewhere to give it my information, which I object to.

Finally, after all sorts of wheels spinning and ten minutes of my life, the setup wizard informed me that I was required to have Siri turned on in order to complete CarPlay setup.

And that’s when I deleted the setup and figured I’d just control the music through the iPhone app. Screw you, Ford.

What blows my mind is that you have to plug it in. Hey Tim Cook... Smartphones have Bluetooth, duh. Use it!

On top of all that, you cannot add apps. No Waze, WTF! It's Carplay, and the interface sucks. Apple is seriously sliding on the UX environment. Put Jony Ivy back on designing hardware, and let the big kids do the interface work.

I can’t prove this but I think the wired requirement was for auto manufacturer reasons and not Apple or Android. I don’t know what or why BT implementation is more difficult but since I can connect my phone to an Entune system wirelessly and use voice dial and music play- although using the Entune system to specify a song or artist or album is likely to fail, the actual music will play. Can’t use voice to get maps or any other CarPlay app to work. Turn off BT, ask Siri to play a song/album, pause the system and turn on BT again and everything works fine. My car is a 2012 Toyota so wireless has been possible for some time now. I don’t think Apple is the problem here, and I think at least early on Android play worked about the same amount wirelessly. That would be less than 10% of the times you tried to use it integrated with Entune and Apple BT. I’m not an Android user since 2008 so don’t take my Android performance as fact. Look it up if you’re interested.

Please get google maps! Apple maps is still not good enough. I live in the Dallas area and it hasn't been reliable the few times I tried it out.

I had a very bad experience within the last year using Google Maps on my iPhone in Dallas. There may have been a way to switch off so that the problem would go away but I was driving and it was rush hour and I really couldn’t look at the screen and menu for very long. Heading back to DFW Airport from Waxahchie I was taking 35 north to Hwy 20 then I was supposed to follow 20 to the George Bush expressway. But before turning off of I35 Google said staying on I35 would be faster. So I did. A few seconds past the point of no return GM chimed in and said some other way was now faster. I’m sure an accident happened in front of me or just the fact that it was 7:45 AM. Whatever. Maps started giving me re-routes so fast that many times it didn’t finish one before it interrupted with another new route. I turned off the sound and just followed whichever route I had selected last.

A built-in charging dock for the iPhone, that also provided the USB link for Carplay would be a useful feature (but might need to be modular to allowmfor future interfaces). I have a Belkin charging dock but have to use BT to connect to my car’s infotainment system (the car does not support Carplay :(

Cars don't get updated or developed on the same cycles as consumer goods like phones.
True but all the recent car manufacturers that are just now adding CarPlay are doing it wired and not wireless. It seems it would be a great marketing angle to say “wireless CarPlay in Mazda, Toyota,Metz. They’re late to the game but could instantly leapfrog all their competitors. Yet they didn’t. Why? Does the hardware to do it cost that much? I know when you’re rolling out millions of vehicles, a dollar adds up...but again, the idea of setting yourself apart in tech seems like it’s a no-brainer, unless the costs are really high in comparison.

It's all too little, too late.
Millenials over here, if they do bother with getting a drivers license at all, cannot be bothered with a car stereo.
I see people driving around with headphones on almost every day, and in pretty new cars. Just yesterday I stopped next to a pretty new Volvo at a red light. The driver was 20-25 with a pair of huge headphones on, digging along.
That car for sure has the ability to play wireless from the dudes phone, but hey, he already had the headphones on when getting in the car, why bother?

I don't even bother with CarPlay. When they allow Google maps, than I will use.

For me Apple maps are s**t both maps, directions, voice, traffic data. dont know how it is in USA bur here in Poland don't even bother.
My experience is the Apple map data is just a little bit worst than Google's but the Google Map interface is one of the worst out there. Perception is everything.

This must be a Swedish thing, I've never seen that in the USA. And isn't that illegal?

Wearing headphones while you drive?
You're allowed to drive if you're deaf, so no, it's not illegal.
I even know people who bought new cars without stereo. Don't think many manufacturers sell cars without anymore, this was at least 10 years ago though.
You can tell since if you look at used cars, there are a lot of cars for sale with just the most basic stereo available.

I find both UI's use way to much super-bright, white screens. What I dislike about Apple Maps is the lack of contrast between roads and the background white. (Maybe there is a way to change this that I am not aware of)?
I have been forced to use Apple Maps with car play and it has been pretty much on par for most of my driving. Still get directions that are longer or off altogether though, compared to Google Maps or even my built in nav system in my Chevy Volt.
I have seen an Apple Maps van driving in my area lately, so good news at least there. Apple is still trying to get caught up and they haven't abandoned Apple maps.
