The one thing I wish the AppleTV would do is play my local media from a NAS. VLC works in a pinch but it’s not what I would expect using an AppleTV.
You can via different apps. There's Plex, Infuse, and a number of other apps that let you stream from a NAS. I personally use both, and they work great streaming from my Time Capsule. They also let you output different audio formats such as DTS, multiple Dolby formats etc along with different video format MKV, ISO, AVI etc. You can also install iPTv apps that let you add different content.

Honest question: What advantages does Apple TV bring to a Smart TV?

My TV already has a smart hub that does more than I can use, it can record shows and AirPlay comes built into it, so I can seamlessly mirror my iPhone or iPad screen, or even use it as a monitor wirelessly. I do not even have a set top box, the TV can already handle the TV-input from the provider.
So don't get an ATV, simple as that

This device is already irrelevant. If the AppleTV had incorporated the M1 processor the pricing and ability would be worth discussing. Incorporating the A12, a 3 year old processor makes this product dead in the water.
Don’t you think that a M1 processor is way overkill for what Apple TV can do at the moment? I have the Apple TV HD an never felt that the A8 was not fast enough for streaming and arcade

To be honest, my Apple TV has been collecting dust for a while. When the AppleTV apps became available on my TV, XBX, PS5 and my TV supports airplay, I really don't see any reason to turn it on anymore.

Guess if you have an older TV with outdated app support and no console, then it's a good yet overpriced option (Roku, google, etc have cheaper options that do the same thing).

I have an Apple TV box but since I got my Roku 4K smart TV the only time I used my Apple TV Box was when HBO Max wasn’t on Roku. Maybe the Apple TV UI is ‘smoother’ but I don’t spend enough time navigating the UI to notice.

Same. I have a Roku in my exercise room and it's hard to justify the extra hundred bucks. The Roku app already is on my phone and pairs with my ipod pros.

Obviously it's not an Xbox/Playstation competitor, but it very well could be a Nintendo Switch competitor (and definitely all of the "cloud gaming" devices out there). Lots of people already have iPhones or iPads, and they could have used this to push Apple Arcade, which supports cross save across devices. It's strange to me that they didn't design a gaming controller and make a gaming bundle SKU out of it. Perhaps they're waiting until they can upgrade the internal storage past 32GB entry level (granted, most mobile games are pretty reasonably sized).

That used to exist actually. It was called front row.
introduced in 2005, a year and a half before the first Apple TV. The original Apple TV literally was just front row, but ripped out of Mac OS X

Well, it should make a comeback.

There is some content that I regularly watch that is not available on my Samsung Smart TV system. It is, however, available on both the ATV and Roku platforms…

Maybe because Sony and Microsoft do those things really well already, and Apple wouldn't necessarily be bringing much new to that particular area. It could also be that the numbers of people wanting combined devices (game box/speaker, game box/ATV) aren't actually that large.
Well other companies also make really nice headphones, speakers, watches, computers and phones. That didn’t stop them. I think the numbers of people wanting an integrated device are equal to the number of people that already forks up $500 for a console. Why not pay the same amount for a console AND an awesome streaming device. I am sure that there are plenty of PS and XBox owners that also paid for a streaming set box.

Yes but as with all Apple devices, have fun when/if the internal storage fails. With a NAS you just replace the bad drive.
I suppose the obvious answer would be do away with downloads and have iTunes music, movies and TV shows available to stream for a monthly fee. Keep the ATV hard drive as a central point for backing up all your Apple devices.

For me, my Samsung TV has taken a crap software wise. None of the app works, no amount of resetting works, nothing. All it can do is get firmware updates. Our Apple TV does all of the work now, outside of the PS4 Pro. TV works fine, so not a big deal on that end.

Totally agree! It doesn't have to match the raw horsepower of the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Nintendo never comes anywhere close to having that kind of horsepower, but that doesn't stop them from having one of the most fun systems! And Apple could put an SOC into the Apple TV that would absolutely shame whatever Nintendo will be putting in their next console, right now. It just needs developer support!
Nintendo sells consoles because they make great games. Not because they slap some components together; hire somebody to tell you how magically it is; then charge $1999 for it.

I asked this same question here:

As you can see, smart TVs are not so smart after all. That is why you need Apple TV

  • Faster, smoother interface due to a much faster CPU
  • Tight integration with Apple services and devices
  • You can use iPhone as a remote in a pinch
  • Availability of some games, including most Apple Arcade games
  • Wider selection of apps (NBC, ABC, Crunchyroll, Plex, CBS News, you name it)
  • Now, the usability and convenience of the remote is far better than you'll find on any TV remore
  • Cast audio to HomePod stereo pair via AirPlay
  • AirPlay screen mirroring has significantly less lag and significantly fewer compression artifacts on Apple TV versus a smart TV
Honest question as initially this was a feature request and even after I’m not sure I understand the point … I know you can use the HomePod for audio output but I thought most tv dialogue actually comes through the center channel and in this case you don’t even have true surround as I don’t believe the HomePod is even creating a virtual rear surround situation behind the listener

so even if the HomePod can itself have multiple speakers within, it isn’t bouncing the rear audio behind you like soundbars do (which are also not the ideal audio solution)

I know it’s more convenient but just trying to learn why people enjoy this or look to it as a feature?

But why not make an ATV PRO that does compete with PS5 and XBox? I mean maybe there a those of us that don’t want to buy a console and an ATV. Merge the two and save us some money. Hey maybe merge it with the Home Pod also and you will get the best bad ass streaming/console/speaker in the market! Ok, I got too excited. Just make a console like ATV, would you? Pretty please.
Um. How much would apple charge for a console that’s equivalent to an Xbox series S, I wonder.

Owning both, I really don't see the use of an Apple TV if you already own a console. And frankly when I watch Netflix, or Disney+, etc I don't use either, I just use the TV apps
