I hope this marks the beginning of a new era of greater transparency (and regularity) in upgrading their desktop computers. The amount of (legitimate) angst Apple's actions (or lack thereof) have caused in the pro/prosumer community of Apple users was reaching toxic levels and IMHO had begun to threaten the Mac's status as a platform people can count on long term.

Still, the proof will be in the pudding, and while the spec bumped Mac Pro's are a nice start, Apple's got a long road ahead of them if they want to regain user trust.

First time ever I see Apple osbourning a product of theirs, it probably means the new iMacs are on the way.

Excellent news though.

I hope to see a new design that is more ergonomic, especially with height adjustment (I have my 27" monitor set up just right and it is lower the the current iMac).

I'd also like to see the the guts moved to the base. This means the screen wouldn't be in the way of thermal dissipation, and the leg wouldn't be carrying so much weight, so could be more elegant and also adjustable. Ohh... I just described a modern version of the G4 iMac. Please!

Well, by that time Intel will have announced new CPUs and we'll be getting DDR3L Skylake Macs. And it'll be thinner sacrificing performance and thermals for a thinner desktop.

Very good news. I am not in the market now, but am always glad to hear about Macs being updated. Not sure what else they can do with the iMac beyond a Surface Studio-like configuration or bumping the specs considerably, but it is obvious Apple do not want to lose their Mac users.

It is nice not to have snark on Schiller for once too.

OK, so glad to hear Macs will not be discontinued this year -- but didn't thing they would. Apple is working on a new iMac - the first in over a year and a half. Shocker. Question for me is why later this year? Two years for an iMac. I hope is MF amazeballs for that amount of time.
If you Want amazeballs then check out the Microsoft Studio...unfortunately its Windows based. The new iMac will look almost exactly the same with a speed and memory bump and a change in the ports. Nothing amazeballs because they don't sell enough to warrant the R&D

Probably not going to go that direction, but I really wish they would. I like the moveable screen, a la G4 iMac. I also like the idea of the touch screen. While macOS isn't built for touch, that doesn't mean apps can't. Could be very useful artists.

Prepare to be.... DISAPPOINTED!!!!
Every time Apple launches a new line it takes all the good features away to add some useless ones.
So better to get this latest revision before the next... DISAPPOINTMENT.

I agree. The last few events have been snoozers. 90 minute presentations that could've been done in 30.

I wonder how they are going to beat Surface Studio because their current OS policy is what it is. Meaning separate OS for touch devices and desktop.

Yes, the Studio is pretty cool, but, yes, Windows, so pass. I'm totally OK with Apple copying it if they can't out imagine MS. But I'll take the same current iMac form factor updated with current specs too -- but then no Studio pricing. Heh.

Hope I can keep my 2013 iMac up and running that long, it's on it's last legs.

I'm still rocking my 2008 20" iMac. This is getting painful! To the point that if they dropped the price of the current (2 year old) iMacs today by $200 or so, I would probably just go with one.

I loved that iMac design (lampshade) too. It is still my favorite. if they ever went back to that and added pencil support I'd be all over it. That said, you're probably right concerning macOS and the lack of touch screen.

With a lower price tag than the Surface Studio, as beautiful as it is, it is quite expensive..

Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller and software engineering chief Craig Federighi have confirmed that Apple is working on new iMac models that the company expects to launch later this year, as reported by TechCrunch.

Apple did not share specific details about what to expect from the refresh, but Thunderbolt 3 ports and faster processors are likely at the very least.

Way to kill the current sales. Well done Schiller.

The article mentioned the new iMac will have configurations targeted at large segments of the Pro market. This is really interesting to me. I'm in the segment where I might not need a full on Mac Pro, but a higher spec'd iMac would be pretty great. This is the best news of the past year.

Let this be a lesson to all: Gruber is the guy. He's usually right and has the connections. Don't doubt him.

Apple doesn't talk about new products as it kills current product sales. Something must be wrong. Phil Schiller is well aware of Apple's lagging innovation. He markets whatever products they give him. Sadly they've been giving him crap for the last few years. Hoping for a real Pro line again.
