Can’t believe this laptop is 8 years old already. I remember watching The Verge’s review of it with a very young looking Dieter Bohn, clean shaven and MKBHD’s first look from the event. Also remember a guy working in Adobe Illustrator on while we work boarding the plane. Apple I believe was just too greedy and thinking everyone was buy the compromises blindly.

The Retina MacBook should have been bold relatively affordable Mac laptop. It along with the 13 in Air at the time should both be Retina with the 12 inch being the successor to the 11 inch.

It's absolutely insane to that arbitrarily short lifecycles for computers are acceptable and, instead, not a huge point of shame. For a company to be seen as "innovative" while continuously releasing products that are intentionally designed to have an artificially low useful life shorter than it takes for a kid to finish elementary school is just laughable. Apple and any other company doing so should be publicly mocked. Widely, loudly, and repeatedly until they do better.
Erm…..8 years isn’t long enough? Name another notebook that’s still being this well supported after this long?

I loved mine, but the M1 Air is just so much more powerful and usually small and light enough that it rarely gets an outing now.

The difference in size and weight between the M1 Air is quite noticeable though - I would buy an M powered 12 inch MacBook the moment it was released.

It's not arbitrary. These machines just can't keep up with modern software demands and are largely at the end of their service life.

It had a short life span for people who bought it for its size despite needing a more powerful computer, or people who’s needs changed.

My MacBook 12 is still running great.. light usage.. browsing, some photo editing, VPN into work. Perfect machine for these tasks and taking it out. Never had any problems of it. Love it and will continue to use it but my iPad Pro is taking over non-typing duties.

I'm afraid you didn't understand:
the 2015 MacBook Retina 12” became obsolete in 2021;
the 2016 MacBook Retina 12” became obsolete in 2022;
the 2017 MacBook Retina 12” will become obsolete in 2023.
There are two problems, though:
1. The 2017 MacBook Retina 12” was sold until July 19, 2019, so much so that in 2018 it had an update in the colours Gold and Rose Gold became Gold 2018, or copper, as the first Apple Watch 3 to use that colour (iPhone 8, iPad 7 8 mini 5 and Air 3), therefore obsolescence is outlawed, because it must be guaranteed for 7 years from the end of commercialisation, that is until 2026;
2. AppleCare+ is once again a legally bound contract: I just renewed AC+ for my MB 12” bought new from an Apple retailer in January 2020, what do they plan to do, invalidate the contract?

EDIT: “Appointment confirmed” For my “VIN,MACBOOK (RETINA, 12-INCH, EARLY 2015) Battery performance”

Not wasting any time😅
A wise move - will try to get mine booked in, as my son still uses it for learning to code.

It was never powerful enough to be my main workstation, but paired well with an iMac as a machine for lighter duties and travel. I agree that it would be perfect with Apple silicon.

Still have an Early 2016 m7 with 8GB RAM that my wife used on a regular basis until she decided to stick with the M1 iPad Pro. It was never a fast system, but I remember how terrible it ran with Big Sur.

What we really need are 3 sizes of the Air line -- 12", 13.3" and 15.5"

The Air is the line that would most benefit from more screen size options.

The size of the screen is the one variable that can make a big difference for the Air buyer, whereas the internal guts are powerful enough for every Air buyer, at all screen sizes.

anyone who loved it likely never had to repair it. Most annoying laptop I’ve ever had to work on.

I believe you are a novice: I worked on the PowerBook 12” with 50 screws all different, some even just aesthetic, and it was much more complex than the MacBook 12”. Not to mention iPad, which is FULL OF GLUE since it has existed.

I was late to the game, but have repaired my fair share of Macs. For me, that one was the worst for a portable.
