Apple Says 'Pixelmator' App on iOS Will No Longer Receive Updates

Unfortunately it looks like we are entering the “Age of the Universal Rentier”. A world where everything, once digitized and virtualized, can only be accessed by Digital “Landlords” through the extraction of rent. Or what we know as “Subscriptions”.

Funny how the so called “Libertarians” in their fever dream fueled utopian tech fantasies of our future are actually bringing about in real time the very thing they rail against which is the proposal by the World Economic Forum published in 2016 entitled…

“You’ll own nothing and be happy”.

Looks like Apple is increasingly becoming just another rent collector on top of selling overpriced hardware. The previous value proposition for Apple was we charge more for the hardware but you the user get higher quality software built in for free AND the innovation of our ecosystem.

Now, post Jobs and under Tim Apple, they’re just becoming an over priced version of both Microsoft and Amazon.

That’s fine. The app has been stagnated for years and got just a minor lift up. Probably one of the best small investment for my iPhone. I just hope they update it just for OS support. I don’t really wish really anything else for a small one time purchase app.

That would be nice for sure; I use it occasionally too. But I don’t think it’s going to happen. They said “no more updates,” not “no more updates except for OS compatibility.” ☹️ I hope I’m wrong!

They canned the product I have to think a result of lack of sales and Apple now is going to reinvent the wheel so to speak! A subscription based app is not a good look for Apple, its more of a money grab IMO. Time will tell if they get enough people supporting a sub based app.

I can't count the days, when I've used Apple Photos, Pixelmater Pro, Affinity, Luminar, Gimp etc... That I've prayed to the Gods for Apple to bring back Aperture!!!

I guess Apple is putting their resources into iOS 26 so that people willl update from iOS 18.

I'm not sure that they can really change people's minds 🙂.

We need pro features for the Photomator to be included in the bundle!

You have to sign into the new products. You do not control them. Canva do. And if the AI market craps the bed, they'll use their now encumbered customers to cover those losses. Also to note, none of the Affinity product file formats are documented or reverse engineered (unlike Adobe PSD for example which is publicly documented) which means you're stuck with pay forever if they change their mind.

Well…for the last 46 years of my computing life I’ve been able to control my programs. I open them, I use them and I close them. Not sure what you’re talking about unless you want to see and manipulate the source code ala “FOSS”.

Plus I’ve got the AI free version of Affinity because I don’t encumber myself with subscriptions (rent). It’s sits beside my MacOS version of GIMP. Couldn’t care less if the AI slop world implodes.

It is perplexing that out of the “Pro” apps in this “rent-a-suite” package Apple decided to kill Aperture only to turn around and add back a third party “prosumer” image editing app they bought.
 
Noone owns hardware or software anymore. Others decide what you are allowed to use and for how long according to their revenue goals. Most will forget they have numerous subscriptions active.
 
Sad to hear this. Have used the app in the past. A great app. Seems like Apple is focusing on subscription based services only.

Who needs Pixelmator, Affinity, PS or Lightroom anyway?

The whole sector of graphic design and image processing has been officially reduced to a prompt since October 2025.

Say what you want and it will be done, without touching the other details in the photo.

2160p output that will be upgraded to 4320p in July 2026.
 
It looks like they won't be including the iPad version of the Pixelmator Pro for those who already have the Mac version:
Pixelmator Pro is included in your subscription to Apple Creator Studio, …, new subscribers pay $12.99 per month or $129 per year.

Pixelmator Pro for Mac is also available as a one-time purchase for $49.99.

I don't really care about the source. It's more that I get to control the distribution of the programs. Things suddenly don't become sign-in or subscription encumbered at this point. And as for controlling your programs, that's already declining. Consider stuff added to your Mac from the app store. Can you control Numbers/Pages? No longer.

As for the source, I am perfectly capable of making changes to a product. I might fix a few bugs here and there.
