Apple today confirmed that "several" car makers still plan to support next-generation CarPlay in future vehicle models. Apple said each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of these vehicles, but it did not provide a timeframe. Apple previously said next-generation CarPlay would launch in 2024, but that did not happen.

Apple's statement about next-generation CarPlay:
The next generation of CarPlay builds on years of success and insights gained from CarPlay, delivering the best of Apple and the automaker in a deeply integrated and customizable experience. We continue to work closely with several automakers, enabling them to showcase their unique brand and visual design philosophies in the next generation of CarPlay. Each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of CarPlay.
Apple also remains committed to its current CarPlay platform, and said it is available in over 98% of new cars sold in the U.S. over the past few years.

Apple previously said committed car makers included Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, and Volvo. In December 2023, Aston Martin and Porsche previewed next-generation CarPlay designs, but have yet to deliver. It is unclear which car makers are currently working with Apple.

This news comes just minutes after Apple updated its website to remove the missed 2024 timeframe that it had previously stated for next-generation CarPlay. Apple first previewed the software system at WWDC 2022.

We want real tactile buttons.

Especially
While driving.

Seriously. The giant, iPad Pro-sized touch screen in my wife's new Subaru is pretty cool, except when I have to adjust something while driving. Not a fan. Way too much to look at at a glance and (of course) nothing findable by touch alone.

Meanwhile, my Honda has a big touch screen for media functions and car preferences, etc., but the HVAC controls are all tactile buttons, and even the audio volume is controlled by a nice, big, easy to grip, easy to find knob. Praise!

There is nothing about this all-screen CarPlay concept that I find desirable in the slightest, even if it looks cool.

Apple was wasting their time with the "Apple Car" project, and google left them in the dust with something that is actually useful to automakers, Android Automotive.

Stick to what you're good at. Google wasn't trying to build a car. They made an OS to run the car functions.
Android Automotive is giant pile of dung. It’s a complete turd. I’ve had to reboot the Android infotainment system on my 2024 Chevy Traverse twice now. Instructions on how to do it are all over the internet along with complaints. Google left Apple in the dust? Ridiculous statement.

Just digged into an Android project after a while. Android Automotive is now prominent and available for creating Apps and Andoid Studio ships with Google Gemini 😳 Development has never been that fast….

When will XCode include Siri? 🙃

Sort of speaks for itself

Tough sledding apparently
not really. This would be eg Qualcomm announcing that their xxx chip will be used in the iPhone that is not announced yet.
Car manufacturers own announcing their products and features. Apple might have gotten their hands slapped announcing Porsche and Aston Martin have 2nd gen CarPlay in 2024

Sounds like a Chevy issue (no surprise) more than AA. I've had several cars with AA and it's been rock solid.

You aren't going to get it. Voice control would be more effective outside of anything that isn't on the steering wheel anyway.

Like it or not, this is a Blackberry situation. The tactile buttons are going away, or we won't even need to drive anymore, in which case this is a non-issue.

It's like Apple's AI summary. They should put their logo on it if they stand behind it, so it's telling they do not and the poor app makers and companies shield Apple (slightly) from reputational damage. Siri is a failed experiment until proven otherwise just like CarPlay 2.0.

no, some car manufacturers are returning to put "real" buttons back in new cars, case in point 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 for the climate controls.

Tesla removed the stalks in the revamped Model 3, yet in the upcoming model Y revamp, they are still there - why do you think that is?

I think the opposite (back to buttons) will happen over time.

Yeah I think the OP is way off, if anything the pendulum swung too far towards screens and now the world is healing.
