In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, and then use it to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

The feature is currently available in 13 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, and it is expected to launch in at least seven more in the future.

To set up the feature, open the Wallet app and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, select Driver's License and ID Cards and follow the steps.

Supported States

The following 13 states offer driver's licenses in the Wallet app:The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.

Future States

Apple and local DMV offices have announced that the following U.S. states have signed on to adopt the feature, but no timeframes were disclosed:
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Arkansas
  • Virginia
Participating Airports

Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports in the U.S., for domestic travel. Given that Apple Wallet IDs are not accepted by law enforcement, and lack many other use cases, carrying a physical ID is still necessary.

Here are just some of the airports that offer the feature — there are hundreds of others:
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)
  • Los Angeles International (LAX)
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
  • Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
  • Eastern Iowa Airport (CID)
  • Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
  • Lea County Regional Airport (HOB)
  • Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
  • Billings Logan International Airport (BIL)
  • Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)
  • Great Falls International Airport (GTF)
  • Missoula International Airport (MSO)
  • Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)
  • St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL)
  • Richmond International Airport (RIC)
  • Norfolk International Airport (ORF)
  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA)
  • Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport (PHF)
Travelers should refer to TSA signage to confirm availability of the feature.

Digital Passport

If you live in a state that does not yet offer Apple Wallet IDs, you can now create a Digital ID based on your U.S. passport, and present it at the same participating TSA checkpoints, for age and identity verification purposes during domestic travel. It is not a replacement for a physical passport, and it cannot be used for international travel.

This feature requires iOS 26.1 or watchOS 26.1 and later.

It won’t mean much at airports until they all accept it. I’ve had enough rerouted flights to know better than to assume everything will go smoothly. I’m not leaving my ID at home unless I can be certain I won’t have any issues. For now it’s just a bonus convenience.

Man, this has to be the slowest rollout of any feature I have wanted. I have had it in Maryland for years now and used it like once. I was so excited to add all it does it make it so I don't put my license in a machine? On my return flight it wasn't supported at that airport, so I could only use it out of BWI.
I keep it in case I lose my ID and need to fly back home, but only at an airport that supports it, so almost useless.

I've tried using the digital passport at two different airports and it failed every time, even when the TSA agent let me try several times. The agent at one station said that it's only working for about 50% of people

Not sure why Charlotte Douglas isn't listed. I used Digital ID without issue there last week. It's pretty neat how it shows transactions like credit cards. It shows the the info that was shared and a map.

I want all my electronics totally shut off when interfacing with any "authorities" anywhere. Thus an actual driver's license and actual passport (or passport card domestically) are my identification.

Read up on how to quickly shut down the iPhone. The watch is more problematic for that issue. Thus no Apple Watch when traveling internationally, just a cheap Timex.

How does North Dakota have it before South Carolina. Come on. This would be a good backup in case I forget my wallet
This is literally only useful for airport travel. Cops pulling you over won't accept this as valid ID, nor should you be handing any police your unlocked phone as has been said repeatedly.

Please please PLEASE read up on how this actually works before propagating this.

Not accepted by LE is true (good or bad); but you do NOT give an unlocked phone to anyone at any time for this.
I thought this but when I locked my phone and tried to pull up Wallet by double-tapping the power button, it required Face ID / unlock (because this is the same way you pay via Apple Pay, for example). How can I bring up my Apple Wallet digital state ID while keeping the phone locked?

This is a feature that doesn't matter until all states support it. Most businesses still won't accept it even in states that do support it. Go to ship a package at FedEx. They require a physical ID. And they won't change that kind of policy until it's ubiquitous.

Every time this article (or similar) comes up, it’s another reminder that Indiana is one of the worst states.

Only 49 other states have to do this first and then we’ll consider it.

How about framing this kind of story as “n states still failing to support digital IDs” to shame the recalcitrant states? Then maybe follow up with some reporting that at least asks the biggest states why they aren’t making any effort?

That’s only unlocking whatever card is displayed in Apple Pay/Wallet, it isn’t unlocking your phone. If you try to swipe up to go Home at that point, you’ll see it requests Face ID again to unlock.

i.e. using Face ID in Apple Pay doesn’t unlock your phone.
