Interestingly, Kia has a history of upgrading vehicles that are already on the market – with the original CarPlay rollout, they offered an SD card-based update that would upgrade infotainment systems from several years before (I think the cutoff was like 2014 for Sorento, Soul, and a few others) to CarPlay.Yeah would be nice to come to my Kia EV9.
Do you like drive over 350 miles/550 km day in day out? Because this is the range I am regularly getting in my 2 and it is not even the latest technology they offer lolI love Polestar but they need to up their range significantly before I would buy one.
It's not about every day. It's about when I want to go away for the weekend and not have to deal with finding chargers.Do you like drive over 350 miles/550 km day in day out? Because this is the range I am regularly getting in my 2 and it is not even the latest technology they offer lol
I’d even pay for it. Hell they make those stupid ass NBA themes and the lightning patterns cost money. I’ll give them $25 for that SD card.Interestingly, Kia has a history of upgrading vehicles that are already on the market – with the original CarPlay rollout, they offered an SD card-based update that would upgrade infotainment systems from several years before (I think the cutoff was like 2014 for Sorento, Soul, and a few others) to CarPlay.
So it's quite possible that existing EV9, EV6, and other Kias with similar dash layouts will be upgradable to CarPlay Ultra!
I get around 295-310 on my EV9 in the normal weather. It's not about every day. It's about when I want to go away for the weekend and not have to deal with finding chargers.
You're really getting 350 miles between charging? Do you drive downhill both ways?
You don't like a buggy or even frozen instrument cluster? 🤣Will there be a way to at least limit it to a vehicle’s main infotainment screen? There’s no way I would want CarPlay dominating my entire control panel. And yet, I need to use it sometimes. If I couldn’t limit it to one screen, it would be a big enough issue for me to scuttle purchasing a given vehicle.
The ability to pair more than one phone to the vehicle to make/receive phone calls.CarPlay works really well already. I don't know what more I'd need from it? We're already seeing a move to tactile buttons again so the demo photo doesn't seem to help much.
Agreed 👍🏻My question is… will it be new vehicles or come as an update?
Did you watch the video? CarPlay Ultra supports tactile buttons.CarPlay works really well already. I don't know what more I'd need from it? We're already seeing a move to tactile buttons again so the demo photo doesn't seem to help much.
Why? None of this stops you from using your car's naive interface, nor does it require you to use Siri to control your car's functions.I hope there is a way to turn off CarPlay Ultra and revert to regular CarPlay, or this will be a show stopper for me.
Apple's software quality hasn't been great lately and I feel it is getting worse (Mail which still cannot reliably send attachments, clueless Siri, goofy AI, etc). The last thing I want is my car's instrument cluster not working because of an Apple bug. "Hey Siri, change radio station" "Heating car to max temp"
I'm also not sure why Apple would even want to get involved with this. Aren't they just opening themselves up to lawsuits?
Don't get me wrong. I love Apple hardware, and CarPlay (for use with entertainment) should be an option in every car. But keep instrument clusters and controls with the car company.
I bought that XC90 because of CarPlay. I just bought the EX90...really hoping CarPlay Ultra arrives soon...but there are plenty of other software functions that need to be ironed out first.I’m glad that Volvo is going to be one of the first car companies to support this awesome new version of CarPlay!
Volvo was actually one of the very first car companies to support CarPlay (when CarPlay was first introduced) back in 2015:

After long promising to implement CarPlay support in its vehicles, Volvo recently announced that the new 2016 XC90 is the company's first...www.macrumors.com
All of those instrument clusters are still handled by the car itself, the UI is completely local assets with Apple projecting in and merging CarPlay assets. It's really not taking over the way it appears.I hope there is a way to turn off CarPlay Ultra and revert to regular CarPlay, or this will be a show stopper for me.

not exactly...same parent company owns part of each but each operates as independent companies with separate dealers. Genisis is a spin off from Hyundai, While Kia was partially acquired by the parent company. They are three separate and distinct brands.Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are all the same company. So basically, the new CarPlay is currently confirmed on models from two companies. I'm sure GM will jump on board.![]()
Come on, Volkswagen! Get on board like your siblings Audi and Porsche!
My Hyundai Ioniq 6 has OTA updates. In fact it's like sitting inside an iPhone, there's so much that's software. How many vehicles have the capability of OTA updates? The majority don’t have this. That means the manufacturer would have to supply dealers with update software and they would have to manually update each vehicle. I don’t see that happening ever. Car manufacturers do this to encourage people to buy new cars.
