Apple didn’t want developers to leak that the 13 Pro’s would have a 120Hz ProMotion display, in advance.
That’s my impression too and it does make sense even if it means the 13 Pro experience will be a lot less polished at launch.

We have to remember that a lot of leakers weren’t even sure about ProMotion this year.

And I guess this underlines the whole idea of apps only being ready for the latest iPhone about 1-2 years post launch.

Nope affects native Apple apps too:
Until Apple gets pencil support on a iPhone pro, a USB C port, true file manager without limitations and 120 HZ "Trumotion", there is still nothing pro about a iPhone pro. Oh last but not least, cameras (even video) have been great for years on many devices so don't bring the camera argument up.

It's exactly why I upgrade to the normal iPhones (this is coming from someone who just enjoys tech and remains in multiple ecosystems).

For a good laugh, go check out the previous post about this and its comments where everyone freaks out or bashes Apple before they know the facts.

I don’t even understand what those people were thinking. What, Tim Cook’s evil plan is to add hardware to the iPhone but then deliberately not let third parties use it because… uh… reasons?

mApple should ve sued for false advert. Not even "settings" is running on 120Hz.. but... 80-90ish Hz
LTPO isn’t suppose to be running at 120hz all the time. Only reaching peak when you scroll really fast. Other tests have shown it goes to 119.9HZ in super fast scrolling.

this tech is only suppose to go as high when you need it. Many android phones stay locked to 120hz this is not how apple’s version will work

They should really allow the option to have it be automatic or permanent.

How about doing some homework before posting BS. this is becoming an all to common occurrence here and it has me thinking about getting rumors and news somewhere else.

MR staff did not “post BS”. They picked up on a Twitter thread from an indie app developer, who was loooing for information. Why was he looking for information? Because Apple has yet to document this well.

(edit) Although I suppose the MR headline is misleading. There should also be an update.

The vast majority (>99.99999999999999%) never have heard of promotion and do not care. Their primary concern is Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok and so long as they work in any capacity they are cool.

First the Apple cheerleading defense squad says “send feedback to Apple”. Then they say “stop complaining and don’t say anything because Apple always does the right thing all on their own without being told”. Make up your minds! Which is it?

Was Apple already in the process of communicating this issue to developers, or was Apple holding off saying anything to see if anyone complains? But if nobody complains, can Apple assume it’s ok to not do anything? Again, which is it?

Complains about what?

Do you think Apple was going to put a high-refresh rate feature in and then not let developers actually use it?

No, what probably would've happened is:

  • Apple would've eventually documented how developers can opt in.
  • Apple would've added better support for Core Animation in 15.1, .2, .3, or something.

IOW, exactly the things that will happen anyways, just with less hyperventilating.

If I was an Apple lawyer or apologist, I could say that standard animations and scrolling already support 120 Hz in third party applications automatically. So technically, all developers already get to use it. Apple didn’t specifically say that all ProMotion features would be available to other developers, just like Apple has private APIs that other developers are not allowed to use. When Apple Pay first appeared on iPhone, it was uncertain whether third party applications would be able to use the iPhone’s NFC capability. And going back to old forum posts will reveal that many of the same people currently defending Apple were ok with third party apps not being able to use it.

I understand even less now what your complaint is.

Glad to see Apple being proactive on this but you would think this is something they could and should have relayed to Developers once they started accepting iOS 15 apps last week.
I don't think that Apple is being proactive at all. Proactive would have been if they had told developers about this during the beta period.
