This might be a dumb question but since SL is gonna be $29, does that mean we will have to buy it online or go to Apple and buy the disk?
If you have to go to Apple how do you prove you already have Leopard?
(yes this will be my first OS upgrade so I have no idea how it works)
Thanks

Would expect it to be on a DVD and purchased from normal retailers. There will probably be 2 versions - a $129 priced version for tiger users and a $29 version for leopard users. The upgrade version should have a simple check to see if leopard is already installed or to insert the 10.5.x leopard DVD to verify it is an upgrade.

Exactally... I dunno why so many people are concerned about 10.6 having a Full version and Upgrade version. Adobe does it, Apple does it with Final Cut and tons of other software. It really isn't a big deal. The only people that problems will be people that don't understand the difference of the upgrade and full version, or who don't read the boxes before they buy it... but thats what retail staff are for... making sure people understand what they are buying!

I am stoked to update 10 10.5.8 and then to 10.6

This will blow Windows 7 out of the water. Microsoft better have something up there sleeves for that update... who will want to pay for another "major windows update?"

No, there is only going to be 1 version. Apple said Tiger users will have to buy the new Mac Box set with Snow Leopard in it (including iLife09 and iWork09) for $90.
Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.

If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, purchase the Mac Box Set (when available), which is a single, affordable package that includes Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard; iLife ’09, with the latest versions of iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD; and iWork ’09, Apple’s productivity suite for home and office including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

[sarcasm]Why is everybody still interested in Snow Leopard anyway? I thought everybody have decided to jump ship to Windows 7 because their graphic cards are not supported in openCL.[/sarcasm]

when are they going to fix the very annoying read-only FTP support, and make it proper read/write?

People think that the disk will only work on supported Macs (i.e. all Macs that shipped with Leopard), same way the disk you get with your Mac only works for your model of Mac.

No.

Apple said they want "every Leopard user" upgrade to SL, which means early Intel Macs that shipped with Tiger and were later upgraded to Leopard will also have to be eligible for the cheaper upgrade. So if it checks something, it will ask the Leopard install DVD.

Presumably as with most Upgrade versions of software (including Windows, Office, Utility programs etc.) the installer will check to see if you have Leopard installed before it will work.

Alternatively, it might ask you to put the Leopard DVD in the computer.

They may even just assume you aren't lying.

People are concerned because if their HDD dies or they get a new on they'll have to install Leopard then SL.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Leopard will get more updates, even after 10.6 has shipped, especially now we are sure that PPC users are left out of Snow Leopard.
So, if some new *must have* technologies are introduced this year (maybe iPhone related stuff, etc.), I do hope Apple keep the Quad G5 owners happy by giving those technologies on Leopard too, not just Snow Leopard.
Of course the occasional bug fix and security issue will be resolved too in Leopard, but usually those updates don't account for a real 10.5.X update.
We'll see.

I agree, Leopard will be probably be the most supported OS X release. There are still many PPC users, it doesn't make sense to cut them out of the loop.

bluetooth

lets hope fix the random bluetooth errors. Ever since 10.5.7 my bluetooth stop working randomly.. no disconnect messages, just stops working. use the trackpad to disable bluetooth, then the disconnect message in the HUD shows up. Enable bluetooth it we are back to working... argh!

Same here.

I'm guessing you've seen this popular thread.

It would be nice if they combined the two - if you have an older machine that originally shipped with Tiger, it will ask for the DVD. If you have a machine that originally shipped with Leopard, it wouldn't even ask.

Full Re-install

So I will most likely do the upgrade install with SL, but later on, what do you think the process with doing an erase and install would be? I'd hope only your SL disc would be required. But who knows.

It'd be funny to have to install extra GBs of space with Leopard, then go back and get that space with S.Leopard right afterwards. It may be similar to when Tiger was available on 4 CDs. Start with Leopard, then throw in SL.

I don't even want to think about doing this with a GTX 285 in my Mac Pro if I have to go back to Leopard every time.

I wonder if Snow Leopard will be $29 for folks who have a version of Leopard from a buddy...?
I almost did that but bought it at the last minute I wonder if it paid off...

We already got a sneak-peak of 10.5.8 in 10.5.7 by the way:

Is it just me or all of the 10.5.7 updaters get the same crash issue after 2nd sleep with their Mac portables?

However Apple chooses to do this I am sure they will make it effortless and easy. They are not trying to copy the pain that is Vista.
