Now that the WWDC keynote event is over, Apple has started seeding new software updates to developers. tvOS 16, the newest version of the tvOS operating system for the Apple TV 4K and HD, is now available. tvOS 16 was not previewed at the event, but there is indeed a new beta.

Developers can download the new tvOS 16 beta by downloading a profile onto the Apple TV using Xcode.

tvOS 16 is limited to developers right now, but Apple will provide a public beta of the software to public beta testers later this summer. tvOS 16 is expected to be released this fall alongside iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, and watchOS 9.

I am guessing all this beta will have is the new Apple TV app experience that was presented during the iOS 16 portion of the presentation, which are (Lock Screen is obviously not a thing on tvOS but somewhere on the TV app):

Sports: Live updates on Lock Screen

When you can’t watch your favorite sports matchups, Live Activities allow you to follow along right on your Lock Screen with scores and play by play.

Video-Forward Featuring on the Apple TV+ tab

Rich video previews at the top of the Apple TV+ tab help you discover your next favorite Apple Original.

HDR10+ support

The latest generation of high dynamic range technology is now supported in the Apple TV app.
And some of these for the Home app:

All-new Home app

The Home app has an all‑new design that makes it easier to navigate, organize, view, and control all your accessories. Improvements to the underlying architecture enhance your smart home’s performance and make it more efficient and reliable.

Whole-house view

See your entire home at a glance in the redesigned Home tab. Rooms and favorite accessories are integrated into the app’s main tab, giving you easier access to accessories you use most.

Categories

Categories for Lights, Climate, Security, Speakers and TVs, and Water let you quickly access all the relevant accessories organized by room, along with more detailed status information.

New camera view

Up to four camera views are displayed front and center in the Home tab, and with just a scroll, you can see any additional camera views in your home.

Tile design

Accessory tiles have been redesigned so the different accessories are more visually recognizable through shape and color. Accessories can be controlled directly from their tiles by tapping the tile’s icon, or you can tap the accessory name for more detailed controls.

Updated architecture

Enhancements to the underlying architecture enable faster, more reliable performance, especially for homes with many smart accessories. Communicate with and control connected accessories more efficiently from multiple devices at the same time using the Home app.

Widgets on the Lock Screen

New widgets on the iPhone Lock Screen let you see the status of your home and quickly access your favorite accessories right from the Lock Screen.

Matter support

Matter is a new smart home connectivity standard that will enable compatible accessories to work together seamlessly, across platforms. Matter will allow you to choose from even more compatible smart home accessories and control them with the Home app and Siri on Apple devices.

They didn’t even say a word about it
Sad...

Apple doesn't seem to care about tvOS or the Apple TV.

I can't remember what event it was, but Apple spent more time talking about hand washing than about tvOS and the ATV. This event, they didn't even mention it.

I really had hoped Apple would significantly update the speed in which tvOS responds. It still is quite slow compared to the other OS's in the family, even on the 4K second gen.

Apple cares, not sure software developers do. Of the platforms, it has the least amount of third-party support. Honestly, who even uses tvOS apps besides the network apps?

I expect tvOS improvements will be announced along side a new Apple TV in the fall. It's time.

The feature to use a Belkin clip to hook a iDevice (or was that iPhone only?) camera to a screen for FaceTime purposes seems like a natural to also work with a TV screen and a tvOS upgrade to finally deliver FaceTime via TV... sometime many seem to want in some kind of soundbar/AppleTV combo device (which would not serve those who don't want/need a soundbar).

This seems like a "just works" solution for all home AV situations if it can work with AppleTVs as it appears to work with Macs. It's wireless between phone and device so that seems like such an obvious use to give tvOS SOMETHING... almost such that I just about expect it to arrive (though I know from long-term experience that anything for AppleTV is a high hope).

I bet they bring the Live Activities sports update to TV OS. Maybe even the dedicated view for favorite teams and leagues.

I think the gaming developers are leaving tvOS because of Apple's lack of interest in it.

Actually, I had one gaming developer, SMG, pretty much say that. They make RISK, which was at one point, one of the top grossing games on tvOS. SMG dropped support for it last summer, and pulled it from the tvOS App Store.

When I contacted them about the tvOS version of their app, asking why it was no longer playable, they said that they can no longer support it due to the lack of third-party SDK support from Apple.

BTW, they still support it for MacOS, and iPad OS. They just dropped the tvOS version.

There is a bunch of other developers that did the same exact thing over the past few years. Either pulled their app from the tvOS store while still updating their iOS/iPad OS counterparts, or just leave an unusable version in the tvOS App Store, abandoning it.

Maybe Apple can turn it around.

Quite slow compared to what other OS’s?

Compared to others in the category? Roku, Amazon Fire?

Probably just a lot of the same features from the other OS updates, where it makes sense for the TV. Really there isn't a lot more you can do with a TV operating system. It's pretty good.

If they would allow us to put purchased movies into custom folders then tvOS would be complete.
There are a TON of features that tvOS can receive.

The Home Screen is pretty useless right now. The top part should be locked when you scroll down and each app you go over should update the top deck

Up Next should be exposed on the Home Screen and not just in the TV app. In fact most of the stuff in the TV app should be on the Home Screen and the TV app should be renamed to TV+

Add the FaceTime app. Allow you to use your iPhone or iPad as a camera / mic

Make SharePlay OS wide with PIP

Add a TV version of safari

Add more to the control center

Add audio passthrough support

Add widgets: Trending trailers, trending videos (across services), weather, sports, recently viewed/saved

where it makes sense for the TV. Really there isn't a lot more you can do with a TV operating system.

I posted these on another thread when someone said that there wasn't anything more that Apple can do with the Apple TV and tvOS:

Home automation
Adding a Safari Browser
Announcing bigger commitment to gaming
Bundled Apple Controller
Landscape FaceTime
FaceTime integration with an iPhone or other Apple device, or add-on camera
Announce larger storage options
Easy connection to Hotels' Wifi feature (a web browser would work as well if there was one)
Choose what Aerials are shown
Allow for instant downloads of chosen Aerials
Better storage management and being able to see what the static storage space is taken
VPN support

Between that and what @tkaravou mentioned in post# 21, there is plenty more that can be done with a TV operating system.

App Store

New Features

  • AppTransaction allows developers to cryptographically verify that the app was purchased on the App Store. (86739279)
  • A property environment is included in Product.SubscriptionInfo.RenewalInfo and Transaction. It represents the server environment in which the RenewalInfo and Transaction occurred, respectively. (85988753)
  • The recentSubscriptionStartDate property is included in Product.SubscriptionInfo.RenewalInfo. It represents the date that marks the start of the most recent period of continuous subscription. A period is considered a continuous subscription if there’s no more than a 60-day gap between any two subscribed periods. (86599570)
  • The priceLocale property is included in Product. Use this property to format price values deriving from the product’s decimal price. (81480683)
  • Present the offer code redemption sheet with the offerCodeRedemption(isPresented:eek:nCompletion:)view modifier in your SwiftUI apps. (85321941)
  • The StoreKit Messages API allows you to control when App Store messages are displayed in your app. (85321880)

DeviceDiscoveryUI

Known Issues

  • PIN-paired devices are shown as discovered devices but aren’t supported. (93993830)
  • When establishing connection to Apple Watch, the App Not Installed notification is missing if the corresponding app isn’t already installed on Apple Watch. (93064321)
  • When displaying the connection authorization alert on devices, the Apple TV name might appear as “null”. (90062941)
  • In SwiftUI the Fallback view for DeviceDiscovery might not correctly render on unsupported hardware. (93933154)
  • In the device picker, supported devices might appear flagged incorrectly as “Device not supported”.

Game Controller

New Features

  • Many additional Bluetooth and USB game controllers are supported by the Game Controller framework on macOS 13, iOS 16, and tvOS 16 and later. (82409809)

Media Experience

Known Issues

  • Settings doesn’t show Calibrated after completing Wireless Audio Sync. (91144719)

Siri

Known Issues

  • Siri might not reliably find and play music that isn’t in your Apple Music library on Apple TV. (94361633)
Workaround: Add music to your library before asking Siri to play it, or search and play it directly from the Music app.

StoreKit

New Features

  • All StoreKit APIs are now annotated for sendability and main actor isolation. (84157048)

Swift

Resolved Issues

  • Fixed: Using @Environment(\.dismiss) no longer causes a view to be invalidated when the Environment changes. (86771246)

Known Issues

  • Network.framework resolved an issue that could cause NWBrowser, NWConnection, NWConnectionGroup, NWEthernetChannel, NWListener, and NWPathMonitor to trigger a retain cycle when various Handler blocks are set. Starting with macOS 13, iOS 16, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16, if software using Network.framework targets these releases as the minimum OS, the object releases any blocks they captured once cancelled, breaking the retain cycle. (89677097)
Workaround: For software targeting older versions, the retain cycle can be broken by setting the handler blocks to nil after canceling the object.

SwiftUI

New Features

Known Issues

  • SwiftUI views log to the console [UIFocus] <typename> implements focusItemsInRect: - caching for linear focus movement is limited as long as this view is on screen. (93428139)
  • Passing multiple children to a custom Layout fails to compile. (92914226)
  • For control, Section, or other views that have a Label, the ViewBuilder content now automatically arranges and styles multiple views as hierarchical elements, such as title and subtitle. If the label views are intended to be arranged horizontally rather than hierarchically, wrap the views within an HStack. (85184563)

Game Controller

New Features

  • Many additional Bluetooth and USB game controllers are supported by the Game Controller framework on macOS 13, iOS 16, and tvOS 16 and later. (82409809)
This appears to be the only noteworthy new feature. Hopefully, more significant change will be on later beta builds.
