Apple today seeded the first betas of upcoming iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 updates to developers for testing purposes, with the software coming a week after Apple released iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4.

Registered developers can download the betas from the Settings app on the iPhone or iPad by going to the General section and selecting Software Update.

It's possible iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 will include new Apple Intelligence Siri features, but it's sounding like those capabilities are going to be held until iOS 27.

Apple is planning to implement end-to-end encrypted RCS messages at some point, so that functionality could come in iOS 26.5, plus Apple has been planning to implement notification forwarding and proximity pairing for third-party wearables in the EU.

It's not known what other features might be included in iOS 26.5, but we'll provide updates when we've installed the new software.

Talk abut not hitting your promises repeatedly Apple. They are no longer it just works but, it just takes time.... And they need Google and others to make it work because they still can't hire and keep the talent necessary to stay competitive.

Tim Cook really needs to go away and let an engineer or products person retake the helm. Very sad what they are now.

Has WWDC happened offering developers an opportunity to understand what changes would need to be made to their apps to support the Gemini Siri? If the answer is no, then the answer is no. 🙂
Actually, yes. Since the very beginning, aka WWDC 2024. They said that everything will go through app intent. The same way apps are integrated with shortcuts.

I don't think that I will upgrade to iOS 26.x by the time iOS 26.7 or iOS 26.8 is available but for those who are brave enough to upgrade and even daily drive the beta/alpha, I salute you.

Of course, subject to change, once my current iPhone is no longer worth it to repair once it becomes broken or an app that I use requires iOS 26.x as the minimum. Buying a new iPhone will surely force me to use iOS 26.x

I'm no software developer but my understanding is that they just partnered with Google to implement Gemeni APIs into their Apple Intelligence framework. I can't imagine that being ready until at least iOS27 at the earliest. I don't think it's like flipping a switch.

I don't know why people keep expecting Apple Intelligence this late in the cycle. The announcement in January was as straightforward as Apple gets in telling us it's delayed again because they finally, finally gave up trying to fix Siri and now they need time to replace it with Gemini.

They did just partner though. The rumors leading up to the announcement were right on time. They only completed the "bake off" just before the holidays.
Unless you are working for apple or google, you don’t know that.

They could have partnered 5-6 or 9 months ago and keep it a secret.

Beside, why did they announce the partnership in January if they weren’t gonna deliver before WWDC 2027? They could have hold the announcement until then.

For the first time since I bought the original iMac in 1998, I am skipping an entire OS update. I've seen it and used it on other phones. I am hoping Apple can get it right in iOS 27
